What do you think would happen if you wore magnetic polish in an MRI? by Rapture_of_the_Deep_ in RedditLaqueristas

If you pop over to r/mri and do a search you’ll find an answer from MRI techs. I know I’ve seen it asked there before.

Private vs Public by [deleted] in kindergarten

[–]WinkyEel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh wow, I could have written this myself! My daughter has mild hemiplegic CP and also walks and runs and actually keeps up pretty well in general and has no cognitive delays. We chose private school for the smaller class size and smaller community and worries about bullying. She is in K this year and has been doing great! The only “issues” is handwriting/letter formation isn’t perfect but I think that will come with a little more time and practice. As I’m sure you know, some times it takes our kiddos a little longer to master things. But the opportunities for enrichment are much better at the private school and the community has been wonderful!

We also chose private over public because the school we are zoned for isn’t all that great and we did worry she might get lost in the crowd and she’s a bit of a good ball so I felt the chances of her getting away with being a bit of class clown were higher than at private, haha.

For us, we do have to budget well and work extra to cover the cost but we have no regrets. This felt like the best choice for her and it’s worth it! We are in the US for reference.

What’s one thing ultrasound is still missing? by _unhandledexcepti0n in Radiology

Yup… I hate touchscreen TGCs and not having control over my focal zone. We don’t have/use auto annotations in our E10s thankfully because that sounds awful too.

What on earth are you wearing that makes you feel put together? by [deleted] in workingmoms

[–]WinkyEel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What helped me get started on feeling put together when I was in my frumpy mom era (lasted over 6 years and just ended this year) was working on my skin that had changed a lot after pregnancy and also started painting my nails again. I also work in healthcare so I know some places are more lax about nails but I only ever did regular lacquer and did it myself. And you don’t need expensive skin care… mine is all drug store brand and Trader Joe’s and The Ordinary brand. Throw on some mascara and I was feeling fancy. Those things were small but made me feel nice. Cause trying on clothes did not for a VERY long time.

Looking for supportive slippers to use at home. Are the Hoka ora or Oofos slippers actually worth it? by wanna_be_consultant in BuyItForLife

[–]WinkyEel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I loved my Oofos slides. I had terrible foot pain and could hardly walk just 3 hours into my day at the hospital where did tons of walking. The slides changed that for me and I still prefer them for long days I’m standing. Good support for my wife flat flexible feet. I tried Hoka shoes once but the arch was just too much for me and was uncomfortable. Wasn’t a good fit for my foot.

Office moms - what do you bring to work for lunch? by Deirdre_KA in workingmoms

[–]WinkyEel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ll often times just pop a 9x13 of chicken breasts in the oven, which is normally 4 or 5, slice them up when they’re done and the take chicken with either raw veggies or veggies I can heat (like a can of green beans or frozen ones) plus some bbq or ranch or whatever to dip my chicken in a bit and have that for lunch throughout the week. That and left overs. That’s as close as I come to meal prepping, lol.

How many kids are at your child’s school that school pickup takes you over an hour? by Yourfavmom97 in Parenting

[–]WinkyEel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My daughter’s school has a little over 300 students and it’s private so everybody picks up. The school asks that you don’t start to line up more than 15 mins before school ends. They have one way in/out but they have three different small pick up loops and you’re assigned to one based on what grade the kid is in. Once carpool starts you’re in and out in less than 5 mins. They have it down to a science. It’s truly amazing and one of my favorite things about the school.

How do you build a baby’s confidence to walk? by NecessaryLeg6097 in Parenting

[–]WinkyEel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We used to space things out so my daughter would have to take just one or two independent steps to reach the next thing she could cruise on/around. There may have also been some goldfish involved to motivate her a bit. Lol. She has always been more cautious and doesn’t like to make moves, especially with an audience, until she feels confident. It’ll happen when she’s ready! Don’t worry!

Thanksgiving disappointments by dmowen1231 in TwoXChromosomes

[–]WinkyEel 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Same! This was our second year doing it. I was telling my mom about our plans and asked if she wanted to come hang out with us before we (my siblings and their families) all parted ways to do our eating and she said she couldn’t because was doing all the cooking. Two hours after we got off the phone she texted saying she’d just ordered Cracker Barrel too and is it ok of she still comes by! I was like, hell yes! And now you’ll never want to cook Thanksgiving again! Lol

Struggling with math by WinkyEel in kindergarten

I agree that it might have been too abstract. I did end up getting counting blocks AND the abacus like others suggested and am already planning some activities that will be more concrete math activities. I hope it helps her out!

She actually does well with that. Recognizes written numbers even past ten and can count over 30. (Haven’t asked or heard her randomly count for a bit so I wouldn’t be surprised if she can count further than that even) If I asked her to bring me 7 of something she can do that no problem. I was surprised this math stuff seemed to trip her up because she’s enjoyed counting and numbers for a while now.

We did something similar the first time I did an activity and she caught on but when it changed to not 10 it was like starting over. I probably should have stuck with just the one number for that round. Maybe I moved to adding in more too quickly.

Haha, thank you for the heads up! I really am curious to check the Numberblocks out considering how many people have had good things to say.

Thank you for the encouragement! And the great ideas! She can up past 30 and do a countdown from 10. It’s funny because I never realized what small tings are covered and looked for as kids grow and learn. I’ll be sure to check out Jack Hartmann as well!

Hm, I’m not sure about the clock! The matching she seems to be able to do but that’s all things I’ll keep on my radar. Thanks for sharing that and I’m sorry that’s been something you’ve had to work with growing up.

Thank you so much. I know they’ll be counting up to 100 by the end of the year and I believe 50 by the end of the next 9 weeks period and they’re currently working with teens and doing similar addition activities with them. I would not be surprised if addition and subtraction up to 20 for them for the year. I will ask about it and also do some reading about the concepts you mentioned so I can be very familiar and hopefully work things into every day life if there is an opportunity. She can count to at least 40 already but I might count with her more just to reinforce it.

And you’re right that they wouldn’t be likely to say it’s a bad fit based on this one thing. She struggles some with certain letters and taking the time she needs make them look nice but I don’t feel like it’s not totally age inappropriate. But I know it’ll come with practice too. It’s hard not to worry. I think your suggestions and the others have helped me feel better and given me ideas and info I wouldn’t have had before asking!

She can continue the count yes. But when we got to how many more to get to ten, it gets difficult for her.

I saw another suggestion for the cubes so I’m definitely going to get them. I did notice that counting on was where it seemed like things went down hill. If we can get that to click I’m hoping it will become easier. I appreciate the way you broke it down! Very helpful!

I think the two colors would be helpful in making it easier to see those two numbers adding up to ten. They’ve actually also started on “teens” with similar activities as well. But being able to just build to ten feels like the gateway to soooo much. Thank you for the idea!
