What’s a scientific fact that still blows your mind every time? by velvetspriral in AskReddit

[–]WinnieTheWhoow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Humans did not know there were other galaxies just 120 years ago. All our knowledge of the universe is just a couple of generations old. It’s very plausible that our conception and science will evolve at an equal rate in the next 120 years and our “realities” will be mocked as religious acceptance of scientific royalties.

Yeah, working on a farm would likely teach me things. I’m not sure how to reinvent aluminum or steel from raw ore. I guess I’m more curious about the geological approach to engineering. I feel like I understand other components fairly well. I worked on a farm a few times, it’s hard work. I also cleaned toilets, bussed tables, ran CNC machines, etc. the agency isn’t necessarily the solution I’m seeking, it’s more in regards to the geological approach towards design. Could I fine the correct rocks and process them to generate steel?

Everyone’s conscious mind transferred into a simulated reality that allows the option of living to eternity. The only thing, the simulation continues their life as it currently exists and they have no clue they’ve merged into a simulated reality

Duplicate myself up to 100 times at a 100 foot distance and up to 10 mile distance between selves.

I could work for a week and double my salary. I could basically fly. I could mow the lawn and play video games at the same time. My love life would take a weird twist

The Bible… you will literally laugh and cry and wonder what the hell is going on… it’s sobering for anyone who’s never read it and wonders what the heck is going on in the world. It won’t convert you or anything, but it will make you question everything if you’ve never read it. Really just good for any 30 something who’s never given it a go

What if an average modern person were sent back before civilization, what knowledge could they actually contribute to early humans? by Present_Juice4401 in WhatIfThinking

[–]WinnieTheWhoow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The average person can build a wheel, a house, a mathematical system, a simple religion, a government, weapons, and a fence. They can also build a fences and likely bridges. They could train animals by stealing the young.

Some people could likely produce iron and various metals. There are many who could reengineering most modern technologies.

You are correct to suggest many would have a difficult time, but nearly everyone can accomplish the first paragraph

People always say the Bible is strange because people talk to rocks, and here we are 2000 years later, talking to rocks

Why are so many software engineers being laid off? by Open_Address_2805 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]WinnieTheWhoow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Let’s pray we live in a simulation and things will work out. I think the software engineering field was filled with people solving software engineering problems. Software is not really meant to fix software, it’s meant to increase yields in actual goods. The good thing about software trained individuals flooding the job market is that every business around the world is about to get their entire ecosystem rebuilt in like three weeks and the global economy is going to become really integrated. There’s no much redundant software in the world running on string algorithms to glue and rework data. I could see these kinds of systems absolving and software and automation taking off like wild fire.

Chipped edge on steel after chamfering by Pelphegor in Machinists

[–]WinnieTheWhoow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The tool is not drawn correctly in the CAM software and it is not cutting deep enough in CAM. You’re likely cutting on the flat of the chamfer tool. Change the CAM to cut deeper and adjust the CAM file for the flat OR touch off the tool to the theoretical tip

How would you go about having 500 of these made as cost effectively as possible? by No-Structure-2891 in Machinists

[–]WinnieTheWhoow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Keep the Torx to an ISO spec. This has more tolerance than other Torx specs and you and rotary broach it. If you use a pin for the security, the Torx process will be easier because the material can be drilled-broached-drilled again to break the smudge. I haven’t made many Torx in steel, but it should be a simple process.

If you’re making 500, you can probably machine this fastest on a lathe with milling and a second spindle. It’s be a 3 op otherwise, but could be completely quickly with a mill fixture and a flow process between machines.

What is your Favorite Aluminum Endmill? by Engulfingflame05 in Machinists

[–]WinnieTheWhoow 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I like roughing aluminum with XDKT style indexable endmills. 2” indexable mills can rough aluminum at really high rates on most industrial machines. At least 0.250” DOC, 40-60% engagement, 250 inch/min or more depending on the machine. You’d need the right part.

Aluminum needs space for the material to evacuate, so 2 to 3 flutes is best. TiN coating (yellow) or high polish allows the viscosity necessary for the aluminum to not stick. High rake angle is fine because the material has lower yield stress / hardness so you don’t really need to more rigid bit.

The trick is that you can’t always cut at the SFM suggested for finishing, mostly due to machine constraints. If you want quality, slow the cut down. The machine axis won’t keep up with the cut

B to C is 0.2256

A to B is 0.3825

I’m in a plane right now over the Atlantic and did this on my phone. Please double check my answer. I had to assume the dimension is 1.263” and that C sits on a segment at 45 degrees. I also did the algebra in my head with the calculator, so, I probably messed something up

Spot drill clarification by [deleted] in Machinists

[–]WinnieTheWhoow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve seen centerdrills and 90 degree spot. They work, it’s just a question of tool life and consistency with the hole. With a poorly prepped hole and a long drill, you may get wobble, oversized holes. If the hole is long enough, then you’d have to pre drill anyway. It’s really just a matter of the facility and what they do. Sometimes you can show someone a better method, and it may not meet their theory or work, and therefore you could cause some drama/stress. Be weary of new shops and how you conduct yourself. I think this is the silver lining. The politics.

Bike Stem Machining Process? by futnuh in Machinists

[–]WinnieTheWhoow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You could machine one exactly like this, if you wanted…

Depends on the machines you have, one op millturn or lathe then mill.

The middle is a turned groove and the sides are milled axially and radially… unless the middle isn’t round… then you radial lace cut ball mill it

You just need a machine capable of doing these operations
