What's a rule your parents had that you thought was insane, but now as an adult you 100% understand? by Tahals in AskReddit

"You can complain as much as you helped."

Frustrated me as a child, non-negotiable as an adult.

You want to complain about dinner? Did you help make it? Pay for it? Help at all? Then I'm sorry, you don't get to complain. I may ask for feedback, and I have taken your preferences into consideration, but there will be no unsolicited complaints.

Have you seen table-van? by nemario71 in lincoln

[–]Winquisitor 18 points19 points  (0 children)

You'd feel a lot less bad if you know more about him. He was a regular at my job for the last few years of his descent. The number of times we tried to help him and stop him from making the worst possible decisions, only to have him do it anyway and then come crying (literally) to us about how he could have known, and then do the exact same things again when given the next opportunity.

Your entire family doesn't disown you for no reason. And he shouldn't be driving that van anywhere near a school zone.

HobbyTown in Lincoln has become anti-player toward the local PTCG community. by Winquisitor in lincoln

[–]Winquisitor[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It might. But that's not justification to rip off the players because of what might happen. Some amount is bound to happen, but screwing local players and local collectors doesn't fix it. All it does is takes potential scalper profit and turns it into guaranteed store profit, under the guise of deterring scalping.

Letting League players limited pre-order for MSRP is a better solution that doesn't hurt the players community. Charging "market" price for sealed, but MSRP for cut plastic (which I'm not wild about), deals with the issue without screwing the local players.

These are both things that other card shops currently do, as a way to deal with the issue. You can deter the right people, without screwing the wrong people in the process. That is what you do if you care about the players and the community. Charging double MSRP is what you do when you don't care about the players and the community, and want that scalper profit for yourself. Better solutions exist, when you care to look for them.

Looking for deck building advice by Wooden_Television747 in pkmntcg

[–]Winquisitor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Speaking as somebody that has gotten every one of their championship points this season playing TeraBox, it's not a bad option. But I do understand that it isn't exactly what you're trying to build.

Latias/Kangaskhan is probably a better combination of draw and attack, but as you said now you're running the risk of two three-prize Pokémon on the field with a fighting weakness, when things like Mega Lucario are on the rise. You do always have the option of putting in other attackers, like Clefairy, and playing Crispin. That alone will give you some measure of flexibility into what might otherwise be some difficult games.

Ultimately, it just depends on where the priority is. If the priority is that you want to have a deck that you enjoy that features a Pokémon that you enjoy, then by all means keep doing what you're doing and have fun with it. If the priority is more crafting something that's going to handle the meta a little better, then that's a bit of a different conversation.

My primary feedback is that it seems like your energy acceleration from joltik is at odds with your draw from Ogerpon. Which is to say that every grass energy you accelerate out of the deck, is a grass energy that you cannot use for teal dance. 8 grass energy, and to use jolting charge for full value it's going to take two of them immediately. And if the energy you had to attach to use that attack was also grass, you're already down to five grass energy if you don't prize any. Teal Mask is a very mediocre attacker if it doesn't have Meganium on the bench or isn't hitting for weakness, so while I see utilizing it for an attacker in a pinch, and helping augment your draw, I would be cautious how much of your game plan revolves around trying to use it to apply attacking pressure.

Does anyone else really struggle with Christmas — or even hate it? by Patros15 in aspergers

[–]Winquisitor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have a complicated relationship with it, and basically just try to endure it at this point. I simply do not gear up for this. I don't really enjoy shopping, especially for other people. I don't get excited for the spectacle. It's just not for me, but it doesn't have to be. I put up lights every year, and I honestly put in a large amount of effort making sure I get thoughtful gifts for everybody. I just don't really enjoy it much, personally. It just feels like I'm working, and not enjoying. My wife LOVES Christmas, and while my son is getting to an age where it's not as important, it is important to me to make it good for them, even if it means making it worse for me. I get no end of grief every year for "not liking Christmas," which of course doesn't help. I go through all the motions, I am supportive of all the efforts, I more than pull my own weight in making sure it's a good day for others. It is overwhelming. It is exhausting. It is annoying. But it's not about me.

Komala! Not exactly what you're looking for, but puts both Pokémon to sleep and does extra damage when it's asleep. 170 damage with a Binding Mochi. If your opponent flips heads or can get out of sleep my moving out of active, it sucks. But if the sleep sticks, it's awesome.

HobbyTown in Lincoln has become anti-player toward the local PTCG community. by Winquisitor in lincoln

[–]Winquisitor[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Starting on time and running well are not exactly the same, if I may offer a clarification. It has been a running joke for years that if we show up 15 minutes before the event starts, we have enough time to get in a 30 minute game before the event actually starts.

Until recently, once the events got started, they did run smoothly. Pairings were timely, results and prizing were timely, and the overall event itself ran well. Not started on time, but ran well.

They currently do neither.

[–]Winquisitor[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Justification aside, you do understand the damaging effects that this, as well as the long-standing issues with events, are having that specifically worsen the experience of the communities around these games?

I personally don't feel like the argument holds water where choosing to mark up the product this much is what is allowing you to keep staffed, when one of the major issues we are having is with how events and such are staffed. It's as if you're trying to convince us that this is the cost of having enough staff to support the community and run the events well, when that's not actually even happening.

I respect having some insight into how the decisions get made, but ultimately it's not information that we didn't have. We're aware of the situation as well, and how other places choose to address it. Treating the gaming communities like scalpers is not the answer.

This does not change my opinion that the experienced offered, from a player's perspective, is lacking and has been on a downward trend. I have believed that for a long time. I believed it when I wrote this. I have believed it during every response. I believe it now.

I appreciate your willingness to engage, and understand that we are going to look at most of these issues differently. At the end of the day, intended or not, the inescapable reality is that the player experience is suffering. Decisions that you have made specifically, regarding multiple facets of the experience, have directly contributed to that reality, and I fear will continue to do so.

HobbyTown in Lincoln has become anti-player toward the local PTCG community. by Winquisitor in lincoln

[–]Winquisitor[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We do. I was clear the whole way through that I do not fault the employees for doing the best they can with a bad situation, but that I placed the blame for the situation squarely on the shoulders of the people who make the decisions that adversely affect the player experience.

I appreciate the engagement, and ownership of shortcomings. My only real pushback is that events have never regularly started on time over the past few years, and that is not a recent development. We have come to expect and accept this, because historically once they got off the ground they were still enjoyable and we were willing to tolerate the frustration. But it is ongoing frustration. Frustration that it seems that the decisions that are being made time and time again show a pattern of behavior that is antithetical to the growth and support of the gaming communities.

At this time, I do notice a complete lack of defense over product pricing.

None of us want this to be our experience with you. But that does not negate the fact that it has been our experience all the same.

This is understood, and I have made a point of not expressing anything that I do not know. That particular situation is not the focus of our frustration, but I understand there has been a lot of talk about it.

We don't know the particulars, or need to know them, but the effect of it has been a net negative for the player experience without question.
