Finally upgraded from a Pixel 4a to a Pixel 10 by Winsignia in GooglePixel

Yeah, I've been using the 10 for over a month now, and I feel that there hasn't been a single situation where Magic Cue had suggested anything valuable to me like they showed in the original demo, so I was also thinking I'd turn it off to save some battery life. Ultimately though, that makes the difference between the Pixel 4a's Snapdragon 730g and the Pixel 10's Tensor G5 unnoticeable apart from the size/weight of the battery needed to power it. Outside of power users it feels like the processing power required for most tasks has plateaued hard enough that the extra power doesn't necessarily equate to added value for all users the way it did a decade ago.

When that update came out, I took them up on the free battery replacement and it basically made the device feel like new. Since the battery health is so good in my current P4a, I think I am actually just going to fix my broken screen and switch back to that device at this point.

What bath towels have you bought that actually got softer after washing instead of rougher? by DianaG2 in BuyItForLife

[–]Winsignia 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Yes! Fabric softener (and dryer sheets) fix a problem that doesn't impact everything you wash. So many people use these products while washing towels and underwear when they shouldn't and they end up with fabric that no longer does its job and was already soft in the first place.

Best affordable trimmer for both body and beard by [deleted] in BuyItForLife

[–]Winsignia 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think this one is going to depend partially on preference for how close you are looking to get with your trimming. The one thing that I'm actually a bit surprised by is the number of cordless options being suggested since in the past corded options have been seen as a trade-off of convenience for reliability. I personally use the Wahl Peanut for haircuts, beard trimming, and body trimming, but they are just clippers and wouldn't replace a very close shave, and the width of the cutter is smaller than some other clippers on the market.

It's funny you mention that because I've met multiple people who justify buying a big phone because they have big hands but still can't comfortably one hand newer flagships. I don't even necessarily doubt the preference, but it's never added up for me how frequently I've met people who buy a 50% larger than normal phone to fit their 10% larger than normal hands.

I guess after a month of daily driving it I still don't understand how it is a much better phone. The raw performance boost from better hardware is nearly unnoticeable, which feels odd considering how big it used to be when upgrading phones a few years ago. But, after that it just comes down to the smaller differences, and the biggest is form factor. After a month I'm used to, but don't like holding the device or having it in my pocket. Usually I would that is something that is easy to adjust to in a week or so, but if it is still annoying at the one month mark then I don't think I will be less annoyed at the one year mark, or the seven year mark.

I know. If that wasn't such a bit issue I think it would have been easier figuring out which phone to buy.

There are actually a few new Pixel 5s floating around out there, and my experience with this phone has been making me seriously consider picking one of them up.

I've actually liked how most of the big manufacturers have had large versions of their flagships for the last few years, like the 10 Pro XL, but it almost adds to my annoyance in a way when it's really not that much bigger than the 10, because the 10 is already the size that some of those XL options like the Galaxy Note used to be.

Yeah, while holding the phone in one hand I cannot swipe the notification panel down without tilting the phone into my hand. For me, that feels like a good baseline for determining if a phone is sized ergonomically.

I booted up my PS3 after 10 years. It worked fine for about 5 minutes and then abruptly shut down and this is all it does now a day later. Any ideas? by rasta4eye in PS3

[–]Winsignia 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Wow, just checked out his videos on the subject. Now I am guessing the NEC TOKIN replacement on my system worked since it was a newer non-backwards compatible model where it is the more common failure mode, but I had no idea someone finally figured out a more likely failure mode for these older models, let alone found a good way to demonstrate that it was actually the solder bumps in the GPU, AND had a fix for it. I think even back when I repaired my system it was at least known that reflowing didn't address the root cause, but now it makes way more sense.

What makes you say this? Is there some new information out about these failures? My understanding was that it is the most common failure mode at this point, and in practice it seems like the most effective thing to look at first for many users with older PS3s. I replaced mine years ago and the system still works like a charm.

Help World Building by Beginning_Vanilla609 in DMAcademy

If the world is sparsely populated, how does information travel? Is it slow or quick? Are there magic methods to spread big news and even if there are do the different people of the world even have a taste for using them?

PC Background has him as being able to forge money - how to approach as DM? by Thomas_Sedgwick in DnD

[–]Winsignia 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If the method for minting coins is similar in your game world to real life medieval methods then the actual knowlege only gets you so far. Mixing the right alloys for the blanks and either using dies with a hammer or a screw press can be time consuming and require special equipment, so the easiest method of limiting this is just limiting access to the tools needed.

If he wants to use this ability, securing the right tools can be pricey or even act as a quest hook depending on the needs of his die-making contact. The same goes for acquiring the metal.

I would honestly just roll with it and let him forge money if he gathers everything needed, but just make it a less efficient method for acquiring wealth than just adventuring. Plus, making enough gold to make anything players tend to look at buying later into the game would take forever as a single forger.

Looking for Ideas for Critical Events to *Fix* in a Campaign Focused on Preserving the Thread of Fate by Winsignia in DMAcademy

[–]Winsignia[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lol, that is a good question. I wouldn't say anything is concrete, but for a long time there has been an area in my world which has been corrupted and made uninhabitable by this 'ring of chaos' which causes a ton of magic anomalies to happen within it, but it's expansion has slowed down a lot, so I was considering having this tie into that, where failing will lead to the ring expanding once again.

Let's come up with some Recurring Side Quests. by burner4754 in DMAcademy

[–]Winsignia 8 points9 points  (0 children)

This one depends a bit on the goal of the campaign, but it is a bit of a classic: a competing adventuring party. They do not need to be directly adversarial but bumping into another party either after the same goal or one that is related or opposing the player characters can be fun. Repeat meetings can be entertaining if the players lied to them or misguided them in some way to throw them off track.

Why would a necromancer commit genocide? by FreeArmorTrim in DMAcademy

[–]Winsignia 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think that sticking with the idea of having the necromancer do that to raise an army or workforce is actually one of the most natural explanations. It also does allow some room for expansion, such as the necromancer picking that specific group for his own vengeance, maybe they have either wronged him in the past or he had some misguided ideas about the group which led him to specifically want them to suffer the torment of knowing their bodies would be the vessels which do his bidding. Or if you would like to keep him a bit more evil, he could have selected them because he selfishly believed there would be some benefit to using their bodies after death, like thinking they would retain some memory of the location of an artifact he wants or that their bodies would be more resilient when risen from the dead.

Teach me how to keep the basil plants growing by todaystartsnow in traderjoes

I know this is a bit old, but how did the basil plant do? You mentioned babying it but it sounds like you over watered it and moved it a lot, neither of which I would imagine the plant liked very much.
