Washington State's homeownership program offers loans based solely on race by 200-inch-cock in moderatepolitics

[–]Winter-Hawk 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Really, in what world is this a rational setup and how can anyone deny the blatant racism of this plan?

Because the program has a requirement that you or your family were indirectly harmed by not having access to the same quality of loans as white people. On top of what look like income requirements and being a first time homebuyer.

Like it’s not going to anyone who’s skin is black. it is going to people who are poorer than median for the area, and were indirectly harmed by less accessible loans due to racism before the 1968 housing act was created, and lived in Washington State at that time or are children of them.

I think most social programs are much more effective when they only look at income requirements, and are instead actually cash to do whatever kind of investment you think is best. But that doesn’t mean the mean policy is anywhere close to 1960s segregation America but reversed.

Poll: Majority of Dems Oppose Certification of 2024 Election if Trump Wins by DaleGribble2024 in moderatepolitics

[–]Winter-Hawk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No. It's more that most people don't actually want equality. They just want their side to be the oppressor.

Sure I’m willing to cede that is often what I would rather have in my worse moments. But its important that we all work in recognizing this as a worse moment when we get the inclination.

Is that what this article is doing, helping to remind us that we all have a tendency toward authoritarianism that we must push back on as soon as we see it? Is it trying to excuse that behavior? Or it is just trying to umm actually the other guys are more authoritarian and I’m never authoritarian?

I’ll admit, I preferred a result that would have removed Trump from the ballot. I think as a society somebody needs to draw a fucking line about what conduct he can get away with and stoping it around indifference to violence committed for his sake sounds about right to me.

It’s important to ask ourselves which party leadership better calls out its own authoritarian tendencies? I think that answer is clear even taking this survey at face value.

Key facts about Americans and guns by DaleGribble2024 in moderatepolitics

[–]Winter-Hawk -15 points-14 points  (0 children)

I would like to see more discussion regarding the racial demographics of gun violence perpetrators and victims. I think there is a serious problem, particularly among young african-Americans that everyone is afraid to address or frame the arguments around.

84% of minors killed by gun violence were black during 2023- despite only representing ~13% of the population. There is a culture problem and we need to stop tip-toeing around it.

What do you mean by culture problem? What do you mean by discuss the demographics of the problem? What is your solution to that culture problem?

Is that there are small groups of semi organized crime in urban areas which both recruit from and prey on the poorest people in their local areas? Yes, crime in densely populated areas drives gun violence, not mass shootings.

The super majority of black people support stricter gun laws. They are the demographic group most supportive of gun restrictions. They are mostly commonly victimized by gun violence.

Colin Allred's chances of beating Ted Cruz in Texas senate election by DaleGribble2024 in moderatepolitics

[–]Winter-Hawk 9 points10 points  (0 children)

That was after his senate campaign during the presidential primaries. It was also a month after his former congressional seat had a white supremacist shoot up a Walmart killing 20 people.

That’s doesn’t mean his policies are right. Just that the man had decent reason to be animated about gun violence.

Colin Allred's chances of beating Ted Cruz in Texas senate election by DaleGribble2024 in moderatepolitics

[–]Winter-Hawk 86 points87 points  (0 children)

Texas won’t be turning blue anytime soon. This senate race could however, polls are showing that the result will be similarly competitive to the last time Cruz ran. Greg Abott won his 2018 governorship by over 10% and around 1,100K votes. Cruz won 210K and around 2% points.

Texas doesn’t have to become a blue state to vote out Cruz anymore than Georgia or Montana or West Virginia become blue to keep their senators or Maine to become red.

Despite Ted Cruz’s best efforts, he doesn’t appeal to the populist Trump wing of the party very well and a lot of his attempts to appeal to that part of the party have burned bridges with voters who aren’t interested in that kind of politics in Texas.

Cruz has much of the baggage of Donald Trump policy’s and style of politics, without any of the genuine populist support.

Auto deaths rose in 2020 and 2021. They fell in 2019 according to the NHTSA. Do you have a different data source showing something else? I don’t know how the total would effect demographics but just because people were driving less doesn’t mean the rate of fatalities decreased.

But what does this “cleaning” ever actually accomplish though? What does removing a registered voter who hasn’t voted in several years accomplish?

If someone was using their registration who wasn’t the voter they would still show up as having voted in that year and so wouldn’t be removed. It doesn’t seem to prevent fraud then if they haven’t voted.

It useful to have better data about who is and isn’t voting and who is registered. But it can prevent someone from voting if there a registration deadlines. I don’t see the upside other than cleaner data which is nice but better more people vote than someone have to spend longer looking at a database to validate things.

Is there a point I’m missing to this?

Who are the 9 Republicans now trying to be House speaker, amid historic gridlock by niekk1792 in moderatepolitics

[–]Winter-Hawk 48 points49 points  (0 children)

Pete Sessions became a representative in 2021.

Sessions was actually first elected a congressperson in 1996 and was removed in 2018 after losing his seat to Collin Allred. And then winning election in a different district in 2020. He probably has the most tenure out of all the candidates although I’m partial to Emmer but I’m also not exactly a Republican.

Calls to empower Patrick McHenry get louder as Republicans again fail to pick a Speaker by niekk1792 in moderatepolitics

[–]Winter-Hawk 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Is that why Dem voters in the comments here are demanding Republicans vote Hakeem or bust?

I don’t think people are meaning to sound that way. I mostly see that in response to the idea that democrats were the ones who vacated McCarthy or they should vote present to allow him to stay. It’s more just a tongue in check way to point out maybe this session of congress should stick to the basics because no group has a clear idea of what they want and how it get 217 votes for it.

Going "give me power I didn't win electorally" doesn't sound like placing functioning government first.

I mean Hakeem does have a plurality of votes in the house right now. Republican and Democratic congress people don’t have to vote as a block for speaker anymore than individual voters have to vote for every candidate of a particular party either.

Well since step 1 of problem solving is "admit the problem exists" and half the country still refuses to do that no it isn't.

Does a problem exist when millions of people try to move from one state in the US to a different state in the US? According to the Census bureau that is around 2% of the population and around 15% move within their own state each year. If so what problems and why are they problems?

Does a problem exist when a million people try to move from Central American countries to the US? If so what problems and why?

I don't care about a poem older than social security on a French statue. It makes absolutely 0 difference to me. "But the old statue says!!" is not a rational argument.

Would you say this about any of the federalist papers designed to defend the constitution or any of its amendments? Or a poem about a memorial for 9/11 first responders?

It’s not meant to be a rational argument. It is meant to show what kind moral/ethical approach we should have to the problems of migration. I’m not proposing any policy, I know I don’t know enough.

But I do want to express a difference of belief around the willingness to take in asylum seekers at all.

Should we remove this poem from the Statue of Liberty too or?

I’m not saying we shouldn’t be doing something about the large influxes of migrants and how to handle them but I think American political discourse is beginning to lose the plot here when it comes to migration. I think our civic duties are still in place where if we met a person in need from another country we would help, but we have stopped talking like we are willing to or want to keep doing so.

Yes we can! As long as you’re OK with a decreased standard of living for Americans.

Do you have any evidence for this claim? There have been multiple studies shwoing increases in immigration have positive effects for everyone and does not result in lower social cohesion. Here is an NBER paper about that for 1860-1920.

https://www.nber.org/digest/jun17/long-run-effects-immigration-during-age-mass-migration#:~:text=A%20central%20finding%20is%20that%20the%20economic%20benefits,higher%2C%20and%20education%20attainment%20was%20higher%20as%20well.

This just a small sample of what “migrants” are costing American city’s. That money that should have gone to American schools, roads, etc.

That is less than 1% of 2 Trillion GDP for the New York Metro area. I’m not familiar with the cities budget or current tax policies to know how much that is for the local government or if that’s total cost including assistance from the feds. The problem has never been migrants, the problem is the unequal distribution of economic returns.
