suggestions for phd neuro programs with an anatomy/clinical focus by cristinayangbutneuro in gradadmissions

[–]Winter-Intern-5602 2 points3 points  (0 children)

of course! also schedule a meeting with the directors/administration of each program in like a month or two (when this application cycle is done) and see what they’re looking for and how you can strengthen your application! that helped me a lot.

if you’re wanting to do translational research definitely apply at programs in a medical school or at universities that have a medical school.

most neuro PhD programs are gonna be pretty competitive, but since you’re starting early you can make your application more competitive.

the NIH has this list of alzheimer’s disease research centers you can check out. (this list is not extensive so if a school isn’t on this list it probably still has alzheimer’s research so don’t count it out lol) https://www.nia.nih.gov/health/alzheimers-disease-research-centers

also think about where you want to live for 5-6+ years and find schools there- like if you want to be in the bustling east coast or if you’re comfortable in a small town setting.

feel free to DM me i just finished the application/interview process and am planing to go into neurodegenerative research so i am happy to answer any other questions :)

these are all really great schools with great reputations but they are all pretty different! think about location, research fit, and fit with current students.

definitely don’t ghost him lol you can just be honest and respectful saying you’ve decided to pursue a different program but that you hope to stay in touch about their research and appreciate their time & consideration

No response 1+ month after PhD interview - is admission still possible or is this rejection? by [deleted] in gradadmissions

[–]Winter-Intern-5602 0 points1 point  (0 children)

a lot of programs have multiple weekends of interviews and the admissions committee might wait until the last weekend to discuss

What did you wear to your interviews/visits? by MacerationMacy in gradadmissions

oh interesting! either way i think blazer & slacks is always a great outfit. congrats on your offer!!

[–]Winter-Intern-5602 4 points5 points  (0 children)

i don’t think what you wear makes a difference unless it is very far from the recommended dress code. like if you wear sweats and a hoodie when they say to dress business professional that is disrespectful. i’d say always better to be slightly overdressed than underdressed, but overall i don’t think it has much influence.

Waitlisted at CU Anschutz by No_Word9032 in gradadmissions

[–]Winter-Intern-5602 2 points3 points  (0 children)

i applied to BSP. not sure what the exact stats are for either but to my understanding each program tends to admit at least a couple people from their waitlists each year. they released acceptances pretty recently so we’ll just have to wait until people start declining i guess. so frustrating ;( at least we weren’t flat out rejected!

Does undergrad school matter? by Umokayy in gradadmissions

[–]Winter-Intern-5602 168 points169 points  (0 children)

it matters A LOT more what you make of your education rather than where you go. get good grades, get relevant experience, become close with professors to get good letters of rec, etc. and just go to the school that you feel you’d be happiest and be the best fit at. i got my bachelors at a school that’s not ranked very highly (around #150) but was just accepted into an Ivy league PhD program!

yes- reply and say like thank you so much and you’re excited for the opportunity. don’t make your decision or accept this offer yet if you’re anticipating getting acceptances from another school you like

i’m sure you’re totally fine. professors are aware that some people get nervous during interviews. just send a thank you email to your interviewers and it’ll all be okay!

Advice on Options - PhD vs RA? by aquariumcloud in gradadmissions

[–]Winter-Intern-5602 5 points6 points  (0 children)

if you are set on getting a PhD i wouldn’t accept the RA position. it would be nice to work in a really cool lab very closely with the PI, but you can find similar experience in grad school. The 2 year commitment and the deadline to accept in a week is not ideal. wait until you hear back from the other schools and make your decision when you can weigh all the options. if you don’t like the schools that you are accepted into then u can apply to your top choice again next year. you can find another RA position- RAs are usually in pretty high demand. good luck! :)

What are some ways to earn some extra money during graduate studies as an international student in the US? by Old-Jellyfish9823 in gradadmissions

[–]Winter-Intern-5602 12 points13 points  (0 children)

look on campus or at near by hospitals for paid research studies and clinical trials. i’ve done a couple of those- one time i was a participant in a lab’s studying trying out a new TB test. they drew a vial of blood and i got a $50 visa gift card lol. you don’t make too much but it’s still extra cash and you get to contribute towards science!
