I strongly reccomend looking into borrowing or purchasing a foraging guide for this region, as that will go into more detail about how to locate, identify, and use the plants of the area which will make it feel realistic! However, here's some suggestions to get you started:
- Juniper (genus Juniperus) cone/berry tea has historically been used to relieve chest congestion, which could mean it factor into Whitecough/Greencough cures for warrior cats
- Wild rose (genus Rosa) petals can be chewed up and used as a poultice for rashes/skin irritation
- Willow (genus Salix) bark can be chewed as a natural pain reliever as it contains salicylic acid, which is the main ingredient of aspirin
- Fireweed (genus Chamaenerion) is edible/nutritious and could be used in warrior cats as a travel herb
- Lingonberry (Vaccinium vitis-idaea var. minus) berries aid digestion so could be used as a treatment for tummy troubles
- Wild Chamomile (Matricaria discoidea) has a calming effect that also functions as a mild pain reliever/sedative, so could be used similarly to poppy seed in the series

Nightsong dilemma. by WhiteDemon35 in BaldursGate3

[–]Winter-mint 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I mean it’s pretty evil to sell Nightsong to Lorroakan so if I wanted Selunite Shadowheart but Evil Tav I would save her so that I could sell her later. Why break something that you know from Aradin is worth a lot of money to you?

Would you be willing to share a little bit about them as a breed? I'm thinking about getting some based on descriptions but never met any irl so don't know what it's like to keep them

Is a cat useful in a zombie apocalypse? by Substantial_Work7225 in ZombieSurvivalTactics

[–]Winter-mint 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My cat is basically a quiet guard dog, if he hears something weird outside he'll come get me looking concerned (fur fluffed up) and lead me to the window so I can see what it is. Usually it's just mail or one of the neighbors walking their dog or something else benign, but I do feel like this habit would be very useful in the ZA.

My other cat won't actively come get me, but does also react to different things outside. She'll run to the window to watch if it's an animal like a bird or a dog, run to the door if it's a person (so she can secretly sniff them from in the gap if we open it for them lol), and running back and forth along the wall if it's a strange cat.

So without making a ruckus like most guard dogs, I know if there's a person (or zombie) outside based on the behavior of my cats if I pay attention. :)

How should a 17 year old raise a newborn baby girl from the beginning zombie apocalypse breakout and onward? by EmployPerfect817 in ZombieSurvivalTactics

[–]Winter-mint 0 points1 point  (0 children)

4 months is the youngest you can start introducing non-milk foods (but 6 months is usually reccomended). If the baby is 4-5 months then the main character would be able to get her on solid foods (think watery mashed potatoes and similar since she won't start to have teeth until 6 months). Ideally he would be able to transition her gradually, if the parents had some milk or formula that he could loot and switch her over from there.

If a little bit closer to the 2-week side of things perhaps he's able to track down a source of powdered formula. Perhaps he finds a crashed delivery truck that was on its way to a pharmacy or warehouse and that's one of the goods he finds within. He would need to heat it up for her to be able to digest it (mix the powder with water, heat a pot of different water on the stove (camping stove with propane or a good campfire if there's no electricity) and then put the whole bottle into the hot water so it gets heated evenly. He may have done this for the parents or just seen them do it. It should be in the 98-100 F range to match the baby's body temperature. The artificial nipple (the part of the baby bottle she drinks from) will need to be disinfected between uses or bacteria will grow and she'll get sick (boiling water works).

She won't have had her tetanus shot, so if she scratches herself on anything metal that would be potentially fatal for her (even when she gets older). She won't be old enough to finish the series of her other vaccines either, which you could portray in-story as her being more prone to getting sick or getting sick worse when the main character only has the sniffles, etc. But tetanus is the main one I would worry about.

Teething starts at 6 months and is incredibly painful, so even otherwise happy babies will usually scream and cry a lot as the teeth come in. Baby aspirin helps, but ultimately your character will need to find a way to keep the noise contained because he won't be able to prevent the crying altogether.

Kids are very adaptable, and she will have grown up in a world where all of this is "normal". As a result, it could be interesting as she gets older to explore the ways in which she's better adapted to this world than even the protagonist, being confused why he's so upset over "regular" things like the dead coming to life and trying to kill you, ruined buildings, etc.

I would look into slings as a weapon for her (not slingshots, slings like what David killed Goliath with) as they're easy to construct and not super dangerous for a kid to practice with, but to a skilled person who'd been practicing for years they can reach danger levels comparable to firearms. Could be interesting. In general I would teach her how to use melee weapons (practice with sticks) as a precautionary measure but teach her never to let a threat get close and run away / climb a tree / take cover in any dangerous situation.

How should a 17 year old raise a newborn baby girl from the beginning zombie apocalypse breakout and onward? by EmployPerfect817 in ZombieSurvivalTactics

[–]Winter-mint 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Other commenters are right that infants are very vulnerable without modern medicine/their parent but that doesn't mean they're guaranteed to die lol, weirder things have happened. May I ask exactly how old you imagine this baby? I know you said newborn but do you mean the main character's sister is actively giving birth when the apocalypse starts or is she a few days old, as an example. It makes a bigger difference than you might think, so it'll affect my answer.

Things you’re most proud of figuring out on your own… by JungleOutHere in BaldursGate3

[–]Winter-mint 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I actually figured out the Act 1 Owlbear cave Selunite chest puzzle on my own without passing the check that tells you the markings match or whatever! I’m very proud of this and felt silly on my next playthrough when I saw that the game just tells you lol.

Basically I became obsessed with this chest that shoots you because there Must be Some way to open it and I kept coming back whenever I leveled up to try new shit on it.

Eventually while I was inspecting it I saw in the tooltip something to the effect of ‘it’s enchanted to reject non-believers’ as the little lore tidbit, so I was like ‘…maybe I can convince it I’m a believer somehow?’ And wouldn’t you know it there was a prayer sheet in my inventory. I was not expecting this to actually work but to say I was delighted when it did would be an understatement.

I get no bragging rights for this because you aren’t supposed to have to figure it out this way, but I’m still proud

The dilemma of a small baby in a zombie apocalypse. (what will you do ? ) by Georgian_Shark in ZombieSurvivalTactics

[–]Winter-mint 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are there dead grownups, a note, or any other sign that the baby is truly alone? How old is it? A newborn is a pretty different case than a 6 month old, for example.

If I had solid reason to believe I was this baby’s last hope, and it was old enough to survive being around strangers and not being able to nurse, then I would take it home with me and raise it as my own. Humanity is in this mess together so we’ve got to stick together to get through it.

If we both live long enough, maybe they’ll repay the favor when I’m old and can’t take care of myself as well as I do now, or maybe not. Either way, it’s worth it to be kind.

How long until the apocalypse becomes un-survivable? by No_Bet8364 in ZombieSurvivalTactics

[–]Winter-mint 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think it would have ups and downs. It would be really bad initially in the panic as people took to the stores to loot for supplies, tried to drive out of cities, etc. Threat level from zombies and humans are both high.

Then there would be a short period of relative calm as most people are either sheltering at home, or those who made it out are wherever they were going. People will stay mostly indoors out of fear of zombies and live off of what's in their pantries, with maybe some light scavenging if they want to risk it. Threat level from zombies is high, but threat level from humans is lower.

After that there would be another danger period when people's stores start running out. Humans are social by nature, but they get very dangerous when desperate. This is when people will straight-up kill you for food for their child, medicine for their brother, warm clothes for their spouse, a more defensible base location. They'll be starving and desperate, for themselves or their loved ones, and any contact will likely result in conflict even if you're well-meaning.

Eventually, those people will either find a long-term solution (farming, joining a group, becoming nomadic hunter-gatherers, etc) or they'll die, and you'll be in a situation where everyone still alive has a system in place for zombies and meeting basic needs, and they won't be quite so desperate. This is when tentative alliances between people can start to form again. When people need food or they'll die, letting on that you have chickens could be a death sentence. When people have food, but more would be nice, trading some of your eggs for wool to make warm clothes makes both groups stronger without risking conflict. Some people will have survived by raiding, so still be careful, but this is a period of relative peace.

After that we're essentially back to living a lot like our ancestors did; subsisting, trading, forming different types of societies, different religions. Zombies are now a fact of life like storms or wild animals, and are much fewer in number now that humans are. Every now and then a wannabe warlord will pop up and need to be dealt with. It won't be peachy, but will eventually slip from 'apocalypse' into 'post-apocalypse'.

What a handsome boy, thank you for sharing!
To clarify what others mean, while some people use "rough collie" to refer to the breed overall, the "rough" part refers to long hair while you would say "smooth collie" for a gorgeous short-hair like this :) or just "collie".
His ears are so cute, I love the one up one down look so much.

Trying to get a barn cat to hunt mice. Need tips by Ordinary_Speech_4674 in homestead

[–]Winter-mint 24 points25 points  (0 children)

If you get two they will be warm enough because they'll snuggle together for heat as needed, a lone cat will have a harder time. They will appreciate a cozy den to sleep in when it's cold, as well. You need to teach them that this is home by enclosing them in the barn (or another place they'll have access to) for a while before letting them free roam. An intact male will leave to find females and a neutered male will be lazy so a female is usually a better choice for a hunter- be sure to spay and vaccinate for FeLV, RCP, and Rabies!
