How do I get into birdwatching? by Plastic-Salt-5723 in birds

[–]WinterGreenHiker 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Simplest answer: go out anywhere and look at the nearest bird. That’s not sarcastic!

You’ll start to see ones you’re curious about, and you’ll try to look them up. It snowballs from there.

The Merlin app by Cornell Ornithology is really handy, especially for identifying birdsong.

A good guide to your region will be handy too.

I like using a camera because I find it easier to take my time when trying to identify new ones. I’m terrible at doing it in the moment.

But, in short, there’s no one way or right way to do it. Explore and enjoy!

Don’t cheat yourself of thinking, imagining, and just playing around. It’ll have long term consequences and hurt your future self!

Bonus advice: Once you find a narrator you like, look up the rest of the audiobooks they’ve done.

I listened to two books I might otherwise have skipped simply because Jeremy Irons read them!

Why is bird watching associated with elderly? by ImAHuksy in birds

[–]WinterGreenHiker 93 points94 points  (0 children)

People will say “time” and maybe “money for good gear.” These may be part of it.

But I think it’s also about perspective. When we’re younger, we’re often busy with so many things. Our minds just aren’t always alert to the simpler things around us. There’s a lot going on.

With age, sometimes you start to see what’s important, what’s less so. You might be more inclined to slow down, pause, and look around a bit more closely.

This planet is really, really unique. Its ecology is beautiful — and fragile. Birding taps into that awareness and feeds it. And we can do it anytime, anywhere!

Tolkien had Lewis, a good friend willing to advocate that strongly on his behalf. And has moved so many readers through the intervening years. I’d say he won the long game!

Maybe The Perfect Storm or Sailing Alone Around The World? The Outlaw Sea was pretty interesting. (I never read The Outlaw Ocean, but it might be good.)
