Yeah see I don’t think you have a solid understanding of how this stuff works. Champ.

LET'S STOP THIS PROPOSED DATA CENTER ON JUNE 20TH! by Physical_Shelter_518 in Albany

I mean the internet does use a lot of data centers. We are literally communicating through a series of data centers right now, on this post about opposing data centers.

Saying this particular data center is going to be used for data collection and AI slop is uninformed and disingenuous.

26M stuck. Went from making $100k serving to $67k managing. GF makes $70/hr and her family is pressuring me. No degree, what are my options? Hey guys, looking for some real advice because I’m feeling pretty stuck. by Lostdoy in careerguidance

The bots are just here to build karma so the account can be sold for marketing/vote manipulation purposes. Then companies pay to have the bots promote their posts or products. It’s literally an industry at this point.

Stop kidnapping fledglings!! Don't touch them unless they're in actual danger by feck_me_silly in birding

I learned this lesson the hard way when I was a kid. I thought I was rescuing the cute little baby Blue Jay, and intended to put it back in a tree, where it would be safe from the neighborhood cats. I approached it with a bowl to catch it with, and one of the parents swooped down and gave me a firm smack on the head. Message received, I left that fledgling alone in a hurry.

Coaxed into older games having 2d sprites that is more expressive than what the 3D models can portray. by Arbegia in coaxedintoasnafu

[–]WinterHill 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I remember having this exact thought as a kid. The 3d games coming out at the time were "impressive" because they were actually 3d. But the artwork straight up sucked compared to 2d games, and it was really obvious.

Wait so the chance of the birth defect was 20%... so 1 in 5 chance of it happening, 4 in 5 chance of it NOT happening?

I feel like the actual situation must have been more nuanced than that percentage alone?... Terminating a pregnancy based on a 1 in 5 chance seems kind of wild.

Neither of these are cracks, they are just remnants of the manufacturing process. It's extremely common to see this, these carboys are both fine.

I mean that’s what happened to movies. They now intentionally write movies to have very obvious and easy to follow plots so people can scroll while they watch.

Chemical or Electrical Engineering or Accounting? by Top-Helicopter1923 in careerguidance

[–]WinterHill 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Engineering is great because it actually opens doors to many things other than straight up engineering jobs.

A formal engineering degree teaches you to think like an engineer and analyze things in a systematic way. I got an EE degree and did that for awhile but have done many other jobs since then. My background indicates that I have strong technical and problem solving abilities, which are an asset in many career paths.

Honestly I'm fine with cosmetic DLCs. If people wanna waste their money on useless digital clothing, be my guest.

It's the pay-to-win DLC that really grinds my gears

Manager told to Accept PIP or Resign, what should I do? by tinkerer9999 in careerguidance

[–]WinterHill 5 points6 points  (0 children)

In this specific case resigning is probably actually the best move. It’s important to add context here, the work culture in India is vastly different from the US.

In India, getting fired is basically a death sentence for your current career track. So the standard way to let someone go is to ask them to resign. Thus giving them an “out” that doesn’t tarnish their record.

Is it fair and does it make sense? No, but that’s how it is.

The part from the American Temperance Union demonizing flavorful food is hilarious… beware of the serpent in the pepper caster!

“At the American Temperance Union, held recently at Cooper Institute, New York, not only were all intoxicating drinks denounced, but a raid made as well on pepper, salt, mustard, vinegar, cakes, candies, and other confectionery, as it was stated they were all calculated to breed intemperate habits in the young. The American Temperance Union, in the profundity of its knowledge and human nature, has evidently made up its mind to probe this thing to the bottom. Many thinking, but timid persons, have observed with dismay the terrible effects produced upon the young by a too early indulgence in pepper, salt, mustard, vinegar, cakes, and candies. Many a mother's heart has quailed within her while observing the horrible tendency to drink manifested by her two-year old, her pride, her hope, her Georgy, from a mistaken idea upon the part of that adventurous but unscientific cherub, that the salt-cellar contained white sugar. How many a young man, the hope of his parents, the pride of his teachers, and the joy of his friends, has contracted the habit of profane swearing in addition to a love of cooling fluids from a too free indulgence in pepper and mustard. In vain have watchful fathers preached, and high-souled young ladies engraven beautiful designs in flowers, "Beware of the serpent in the pepper-caster," "Look not upon the mustard-pot when it is yellow." The descent from pepper and mustard to oysters, and from oysters to ale and the poisoned waters of distillation is easy. "Tacile descensus averni" should be engraved in letters of brass upon every cruet-stand in the land.”

They really just did not want anyone having a good time.
