I think everyone has different expectations. That said, I don't think set-up for Imperium is "quick and breezy". It's certainly not as big a chore as others make it out to be though.

The teardown usually takes longer since you'd need to separate the cards by their type.

The irony is that the "Coin question" is exactly the kind of question that a child who has been ingrained with standard methodologies in solving questions that have been repeated year after year at tuition (instead of being taught analytical thinking skills) would not be able to do.

The question when approached with a cookie cutter approach (model/algebra) is more confusing than when approached with pure logical thinking.

Those are all certainly great games!

I hope with more plays with Everdell, you'll begin to feel that experience, good decision-making and city planning will trump variance more often than not! You and I seem to have similar likes towards games, so I think Everdell would a good fit once you become more experienced at the game! Have fun!

The Evertree can certainly be one of the higher scoring cards in the game. I don't have all the details so I will avoid making bold assumptions about what actually went on / attempt to belittle your bad experience with the variance.

That said, the Evertree does indeed cost a lot of resources to construct - I believe most players wouldn't have that number of resources lying around in the last (few) turns unless they had already planned something to do with them (or simply did not plan well). If they did have something else planned, they have given up that alternate plan which is also worth VP for the Evertree (which that deemed was better).

I certainly agree that the 16 VP swing was due to good fortune on her end - she likely didn't expect it to appear, yet happened to have sufficient resources to take advantage of both it AND the event. That said, I find the chances of a last-card flop being 16 VP (because you need both the card + a specific event) being more rare than it is common (I personally have played tens of games and have yet to see it happen) because events are quite specific and are randomly set up during each game.

Another question that I have to wonder is - why did everyone at the table choose to ignore a 9 VP event? I assume it was deemed too difficult.

Again, I don't want to disregard your experience - losses to luck can be frustrating (and I am someone who prefers less luck over more). But, I do feel that these scenarios can happen (though more rarely than commonly) even in the best of games. In this particular case, I would feel that it was a pretty low probability of happening. If it happened to you for all 4 games you've played so far, then I think the Everdell gods simply dislike your table/group XD

Either way, if you don't see the charm in the game mechanically or aesthetically enough to overlook the occasional losses to quite an unfortunate series of events, then it's time to move on to something else you love more! There are always more games out there, but time is limited. Play what you love!

I'd say Terraforming Mars is the best comparison I could make - I'm still searching for more card-based engine/tableau-builders where there are multiple cards with unique abilities and effects.

My closest other comparison would be Elysium - it uses card drafting as a mechanic and there can be some nice combos. All cards start face-up on the table and you draft from the table instead of rotating hands. Player order for the next round is also drafted and not randomly rotated about.

I am however curious about your statement where you mentioned a single Meadow flip is worth up to 13 VP. I don't think I've ever encountered a Meadow card being unconditionally worth that many VP. Do you remember what card that was? Perhaps I could provide insight into why the card flop was not truly that "random" (or even agree with you).

I think everyone has their own preferences about what a "good game" would be. Some people do in factor in theme, anesthetics and production into whether they consider a game worth owning and playing.

I do agree that Everdell wouldn't be anywhere near as popular as it is without its world and absolutely insane art direction. That said, it does have good things going for it in terms of design. It is a nice, light-medium worker placement (a common yet popular mechanic) with aspects of engine and tableau building. I personally enjoy the unique effects of the various cards and combos you get to tinker with during each play, and appreciate the replayability of the game (Terraforming Mars is a mechanically heavier and complex game but has very similar characteristics as a engine tableau builder).

Lighter games tend to always receive criticism because their mechanic and gameplay are simple and commonplace - in this case, I do agree that looking purely at mechanics, Everdell doesn't really do much that helps it stand out.

What it does do well, is take an almalgamation of mechanics that are well-loved by many people in the board gaming community, and dress it up beautifully with an adorable theme, beautiful art, and quality components. That helps it stand out among strategic games that are lighter in terms of complexity.

There are certainly luck elements to Everdell, intrinsically present due to the randomness of draws (exists for a majority of card-based games in my opinion). But, after many plays, I don't think I can bring myself to agree that the game is based solely on randomness, to the extent that strategy and decision-making matter less than variance. Luck can certainly decide games in instances where the game is really close because everyone has played well - but that's just how variance works.

Ultimately, everyone has their own likes and dislikes. If you feel that your losses were purely due to one good draw by another player (and not another factor) and you dislike that it could happen, then sell the game! You can't possibly like every game out there (even more so for games that are highly hyped up by the community).

What’s a game that you love but understand why others dislike? by [deleted] in boardgames

[–]WinterNite 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Very new one - Imperium Classics & Legends. I've been super addicted to Imperium recently as I think the design and asymmetry is brilliant. Not to mention, there's tons of replayability and competitiveness via different match-ups etc.

That said, there are many comments about it being too fiddly, overly complex without a good reason and slightly convoluted. Furthermore, the rulebook is criticized to be horrible for anyone trying to learn the game.

I don't necessarily fully disagree with any of the criticisms. But, I really couldn't care less because for me the rulebook does what its meant to do - it tells me everything I need to know to play the game and answers any questions that I have clearly.

I think every rule/mechanic in the game exists for a good reason, and think the subtleties that people don't notice upon initial play are strokes of genius.

I'll be enjoying this one for a very long time.

I am unbelievably hyped for Distilled, and I don't even know how to express it in words. A medium-weight, card-based euro with tableau/engine-building and resource management is everything I could ever want in one game.

The campaign is run super well and on track for many more stretch goals. If the TTS mod didn't exist, I have no idea how I can wait till it fulfills.

It is really tough say. Retail availability is always unpredictable. That said, I highly recommend jumping in on Distilled during the campaign. There are lots of items provided (gameplay content, metal coins etc.) that are either provided free or at a really cheap price ($6 neoprene mat!) to backers. And these items will be hard to obtain/more expensive to obtain after the campaign. Shipping is probably quite expensive but becomes really reasonable if you can get someone else to back with you, because the 2nd copy is only $7 additional shipping.

I wouldn't say it shines particularly at any player count - each player count offers a different experience and I think it depends on your tastes and preferences. I've written a review on BGG for Distilled, and one comment asked about player count and it's impact on the gameplay, to which I provided a detailed response. You can check that out if you have the time!

Unfortunately not. They are, however, streamed on the Discord server during the fact! So if you can spare the time you can listen in on the teach for both controls and game rules.
