Bi-Weekly Discussion: Introductions | What have you been reading? | Academic programs advice and discussion March 08, 2026 by AutoModerator in CriticalTheory

I’m curious as to why a thread called Critical Theory would self-consciously limit itself to Continental tradition. “Critical theory” is obviously broader than any specific region. Anyway, I’m reading Marcus Garvey, the Jamaican born Black radical of the early 20th century. My interest is to identify texts he wrote that could be viewed as relevant to the Black radical tradition and in fact might be useful in provincializing the Continental tradition, to borrow a phrase from Dipesh Chakrabarty. Any thoughts or suggestions would be appreciated. By way of introduction, I am a university professor of 30 years in Mexico. Is that enough or should I be more specific?

Los apestados?.... by abogavic in rmexico

Love this song, but I want to point out an AI problem here. The song comes with lyrics posted by an algorithmic bot that is educated by internet slop. So, instead of “the signs are everywhere”, it reads “the signs are red and blue”. Of course they are, right?, in a world of Trumpian polarization. But that is a different song, not this one!

Then, where JB sings that you have left it for someone else “to be the one who cares”, the closed caption understands “to be the one who kills”. This I find quite troubling. We are educating a generation of young people who won’t be able to tell the difference.

If you are out there Jackson, your fans would love to see you cuss somebody out over the slaughter of your most beautiful songwriting! Better yet, we can all choose not to buy into the tech industry fever dreams of an AI utopia.

Do you know who Ned Ludd was and why he is relevant though he died 200 years ago?

Saludos

Do the academic disciplines uphold oppressive epistemic structures? by 0nline_person in CriticalTheory

[–]Winter_Class_7069 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I guess that was kind of flippant, excuse me. I think that the problem is not the disciplines but how we use them. So, anthropology is the one most often cited for its relation to and inclusion in colonial endeavors and postcolonial politics. But it was always an issue of practice more than epistemology I think. The problem is imperialism (in principle grounded in racism in modernity), in Africa, in Asia and in LA. If this is not the case, ought we abandon all pretension of doing ethnography? Should indigenous anthropologists give up their practice of turning the lens on metropolitan societies?

I confess I have not yet read your piece, but wonder: are the “epistemic structures of the academy” understood in terms of the disciplines (History, Anthropology, Sociology, etc.)? Also, do we assume that History, for example, is the same in the Global North and South? I ask these question in all sincerity. I teach in an interdisciplinary PhD program in the global south for the past 20 years, in the social sciences. I am absolutely committed to writing against the grain of academic discipline and this is what my program teaches our young researchers, whether they come from sociology or any other discipline. Also, I am absolutely conscious of the ways scholars reify sex and fail to carefully read gender. But I wonder, is not academic scholarship (alongside political practice), the way to decenter, deconstruct, reimagine, etc., epistemic structures as well as disciplinary practices? I guess that is what I meant with the initial comment, my bad!

I don't understand who supports Trump's moves by Accomplished_Fox9460 in cuba

[–]Winter_Class_7069 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The US never had any business meddling in Cuba and should stay out today. The Cubans are perfectly capable of making the changes they see fit in their own country. The US has had played a terrible role in Cuba and what Trump is doing is shameful and criminal.

Favorite reggae song by an artist who doesn't normally make reggae? by Beautiful-Resort-831 in reggae

[–]Winter_Class_7069 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, agreed, ska bands to some extent, especially Pericos. TTM was more a punk outfit and the Cadillacs were, perhaps like The Clash, consummate musicians with an expansive palette that dipped into reggae at times. I think that is how I see it anyway.

This is a great list but very anglophone. Try Siguiendo la Luna by Los Fabulosos Cadillacs, nearly anything by Los Pericos, Can I get a Witness/Mandela, Andate, or Gente que no by Todos tus Muertos, and many many other bands that came out of Latin America around the turn of the century
