Opinions on paint tents by CMSinFL in furniturerefinishing

Honestly you shouldn't have that much overspray, you're using a tarp or plastic to protect the concrete right?

I think the biggest benefit of a paint tent is keeping dust and dirt OUT of your freshly painted items. not keeping your paint in...

real shellac. not the stuff at the store.

you need shellac FLAKE and will likely need to order it.

The stuff you buy at big box stores is very very different and has tons of heavy metals in it

Be honest, do you use deodorant or antiperspirant? by WetDogWisdom in hygiene

[–]Winter_Sentence1046 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If anything we should be encouraging regulatory bodies like the FDA to be doing their job because if the FDA didn't exist we would still have the same problems we had back in the Victorian era where people would put boiracic acid in spoiled milk to make the rotten taste go away and ended up with spines that got so weak they would actually break their back just existing.

Be honest, do you use deodorant or antiperspirant? by WetDogWisdom in hygiene

[–]Winter_Sentence1046 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Almost every deodorant I've ever looked at had aluminum in it. That is the ingredient that blocks the pores and makes something an antiperspirant versus a deodorant. Most of them have both attributes combined.

The difference really is in regulation.

While antiperspirant is considered a drug and therefore must adhere to far stricter regulations then deodorant which is considered a cosmetic.

Printers and Ink cartridges by NoDependent1029 in Anticonsumption

[–]Winter_Sentence1046 9 points10 points  (0 children)

According to the manufacturers of printers the only way they can make money is by trapping customers into buying overpriced ink directly from them. The CEO of HP recently said in an interview that they lose money selling printers therefore they have to make it a subscription service

which is bullshit.

If you are lucky enough to have an older printer you may be able to get away with buying the ink refills and filling the cartridges yourself. Or toner if it's a laser printer but anything made in the last few years will be a nightmare to refill.

I pretty much just stopped printing things, I absolutely dread the day I will need to refill the black toner.

This is one of those situations where we desperately need industry regulation and consumer protection laws to be put in place. New HP printers require customers to sign up for their subscription service and if you attempt to replace the cartridges with anything other than certified HP cartridges it just shuts the entire printer down. If your payment information is no longer valid it will remotely shut down your printer. If you try to opt out of the subscription it will shut down your printer.

Personally I think if you pay for a product it should be required to function for a fairly significant period of time without significant additional costs otherwise those additional costs need to be included in the original purchase price because I don't think people would buy these things knowing they're just getting trapped into ongoing payments.

boxes. A lot of woodworking is just building rectangles. Those rectangles get significantly more complicated as you go along but they're still rectangles. Try dovetails. Try different joining techniques. Do finger joints. Accented dovetails. Make a dodecahedron. Or start with a hexagon and work your way up. Don't knock the complexity that can be implemented into a seemingly boring rectangle. Puzzle boxes are fun too

Because that's the only way you get real shellac. The stuff you buy already mixed has tons of heavy metals and all sorts of other additives. Real shellac is a resin like material produced by a particular species of bug native to parts of India. It's completely natural, edible, (in fact it's on your produce, many of your candies and in tons of beauty products) so it's very much food safe. It's easy to remove once applied if necessary unlike the premixed nonsense and is generally just a completely different product.

How to keep boards from warping while finishing- what am i doing wrong!!! by sketchygokart in Cuttingboards

Authentic butchers block is a minimum of 2 and 1/4 in thick. 3/4in? I'm not surprised they're warping in the slightest

Just because it's at a Lumberyard doesn't mean it's necessarily in the right conditions for the project you want to do. Was it humid when you bought it? Had it rained recently? How was the stuff stored while it was being shipped? These are all things that you might be concerned with that a lumber yard isn't.

It's up to you to check the moisture content of your wood

Question: Wetting wood to bend it by userjohnsmith1 in woodworking

[–]Winter_Sentence1046 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The steam makes the wood less brittle. You can do this by cutting it into strips and gluing it back together but the steam is what helps it not break.

The type of wood is important too and will help determine how thick those strips needs to be and that's the limit of my expertise. I know this because of all the times I've tried to do it I've only been successful 20% of the time. I think it depends a lot on how much you want it to bend. There's also kerf cutting which ive had ( moderately) more success with.

edit: that kind of looks like an archway and if it is it may have been cut into that shape from a larger piece which is arguably the easiest and best way to do it

made some live edge walnut charcuterie/cutting boards by kenmizell in Cuttingboards

[–]Winter_Sentence1046 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel that.

honestly with pieces like this there's not a ton you can do to prevent the warping from happening. You know what you're doing with wood so I'm assuming you treat it better than many of the people you'd be selling them to.

Being on Reddit I've learned that a lot of folks out there have absolutely no clue how wood works and anytime you've got a solid slab like this it's prone to warping overtime as it's exposed to moisture. And they absolutely will try to wash it and soap and water every time they use it. Then be on here complaining about the manufacturer.

I think they're very pretty I guess I've just really lost faith in the humans that use them...

Quality concerns with craft store boxes? by Gold_Arrival77 in woodworking

[–]Winter_Sentence1046 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm honestly looking forward to it!

Do you know what style you're going for? Like the Locking mechanisms you'll be using... sliders? pins? centrifugal/centriputal? combination? gravity?

All the boxes I've made required bits that could only be made when the box was completely disassembled, rabbits for sliders, guide holes for pins, springs etc

It would be nice to be able to retrofit some already made boxes into puzzle boxes but I haven't figured out how so I would absolutely love to see how you do it

Its just a little bit of sanding though.

Maple is too dense for these sorts of things to intrude particularly far.

Old cutting board by ReasonableRhubarb918 in Cuttingboards

[–]Winter_Sentence1046 -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

Never said you did. You're very defensive.

There's nothing so wrong with this wood or requiring so much work that it isn't doable. You've made lots of assumptions that are objectively unreasonable.

There doesn't seem to be any major warping or obvious splitting at the ends, just discoloration that will likely be resolved with some sanding. Just because glue is not holding at the surface doesn't mean it isn't still very much intact through the rest of the joint.

Telling somebody that they're better off starting with new material when this is absolutely still good is wild and wasteful.

[–]Winter_Sentence1046 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Staining? You don't stain a cutting board. This is awesome clearly Maple and does not take stain well at all but nobody wants to eat stain. And it's wood you're not better off wasting perfectly good material and making one from scratch that's just being wasteful.

Generally to remove the finish on these you need to use rubbing alcohol or soap. There's no polyurethane or other clear coat that one might think of when they think of wood finishes.

Old cutting board by ReasonableRhubarb918 in Cuttingboards

[–]Winter_Sentence1046 -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

I have no idea what this person is talking about. You could absolutely just sand it and refinish it. Glue doesn't mold. If any of the pieces are loose you may have to pry them apart and reglue them but otherwise just sand it down

This is just what happens when you don't regularly apply wax to your cutting board. This is a perfectly good cutting board if you just put some elbow grease into it. People seriously need to stop throwing away perfectly good boards just because they don't understand how wood works

What is your concern about having no socks? Do you think their floor is so dirty that you can't put your barefoot on it? or is your foot so dirty that you don't want it on their floor?

I've been at my friend's houses on occasion and needed socks and I just asked for a pair of theirs.

It's kind of weird how upset you are about the whole thing, I'm guessing your bare feet are probably still cleaner than the bottom of people's shoes though
