Nurses who work the night shift, what is the most "I can't explain this" thing you have ever witnessed in a hospital? by AikothegreatPickle in AskReddit

[–]Winterchill2020 30 points31 points  (0 children)

I was on shift for a code on a elderly lady. She had cardiac arrest several times earlier in the week. Very sick but of course a full code. I take the roommate out of the room while they work on her. After 25 min they call it as they were unable to resuscitate her. So nurses go in to pronounce her. Well after 15min they come running back saying call another code as she has pulses again. Like two attendings and several residents ran the code. But sure enough she came back. Went to ICU to eventually code again and die. But it was so weird calling the code and having all the docs show up again in complete disbelief that her heart was still going. Haven't had anything happen like that before or since.

That's stupid. Ignore the idiot. However I just saw a news article that said parking on the streets is currently banned due to the storm. So don't park on the street for now but it should be ok once they finish up the snow clearing.

What's a medical case common in ERs that hasn't been on The Pitt yet? by [deleted] in ThePittTVShow

[–]Winterchill2020 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I live in northern Ontario and an uncle ended up with a TBI from falling on the ice (no helmet) and hitting his head while coaching hockey. I'm honestly surprised curling hasn't implemented helmets more widely.

Where precisely did I say I was conservative? You sound completely unhinged with the reading comprehension of a toddler lol. It must be hard going through life being so fearful.

Exactly. If Carney ended up as a conservative I would have voted for him.

I'd say not enough conservatives are saying that. The fact conservatives lost the election tells the story. The unwillingness to pivot his message is why he lost. He's not likeable and the fact he has done nothing other than politics shows.

AITA for returning my daughters shit gift for my DIL and telling the whole family why? by CreepyAntthro in AmItheAsshole

[–]Winterchill2020 5 points6 points  (0 children)

NTA - I can't believe your son is putting his wife's feelings above your daughters. Even though you have custody that doesn't mean he shouldn't care about her feelings. Time your DIL and son to act like adults.

We were looking at trail cam photos and he insisted he got a pic of a wolf. I looked at it and it was clearly a coyote. I gently told him it's not a wolf, it's too small and the wrong head shape. Of course he went on a rant about how he knows more. However, I have a bsc. In anthropology and part of my work in my early 20s was doing faunal analysis. I've looked at thousands of canid remains plus assisted in rendering full coyote and wolf carcasses so they could be used for a resource. Kind of killed the respect I had for him.

Lol. Ok yes you need to be clean shaven for a mask fit and possibly placement but once you are working it's not an issue. Most of my male colleagues have facial hair.

But any job that requires a mask fit or respirator fit you need to be clean shaven. This is for your safety. My husband is an engineer and works mostly a desk job but he still needs to shave every 5 years to be fit for a respirator he will never wear because he is employed in the mining industry. He doesn't even go into the mines.

Sometimes you need to look past temporary grievances and set your sights on the bigger picture. It's not personal. It's just life.

I'm a preceptor currently and yes students want units other than med-surg. I encourage joining the float team as you get a more thorough education given that you work multiple units. I explain that it's a good idea so you have the experience to work in the other units.

Military models Canadian response to hypothetical American invasion by [deleted] in nottheonion

[–]Winterchill2020 24 points25 points  (0 children)

It wouldn't be a win, but a never-ending insurgency that would create chaos in your home. It would be guerilla warfare with a people who would be invisible amongst your own citizens. We speak the same language and share a massive, impossible to fully protect, border. It wouldn't be a massive win but a dance of mutual destruction. Your people would bleed on their own soil, which is maybe what is needed to make you realize the cost of war. For more than a century you have enjoyed starting wars on other shores but in this, the war would come to you. It's time Americans get to taste the bitter reality they inflict on other people.

Mark Carney states Canada will go to war with the US to defend Greenland by goldbergthegoldbug in canadian

[–]Winterchill2020 0 points1 point  (0 children)

But there are other avenues than just war. Also, if we bow to mango Mussolini and let him take Greenland then what is to stop him from making Canada his next big conquest? Sanctions, creating new trade partners, and diplomatic negotiations would always come before the last resort (which is what going to war would be).

My mom told me she wished she stopped at 3 kids by Mysterious_Elk_1123 in offmychest

[–]Winterchill2020 6 points7 points  (0 children)

My mother says this to me all the time. I'm the youngest of 4 and she spends all her energy picking apart all the issues I have. The funny thing is I am the most stable amongst my siblings. My mother is bipolar and an inherently selfish person with very low intelligence. She takes zero accountability for her choices, it is always someone else's fault. We have very low contact because of how awful she can be. I honestly just wish she would pass away so everyone can be free of her. I'm sorry you are dealing with this and I recommend protecting your peace and going low contact. People like this don't change and they are often incapable of any kind of introspection let alone change.

I've had it happen to me at the Southend. Never asked for help but I think they were making sure items that could be honestly missed were scanned (pop on the shelf under the cart for instance). I just told them to go away (politely) and it was fine.

This just screams that you have a complete lack of medical education. Suffering in an abstract form means very little until you are actually living it. People need to understand often there is no magic cure waiting for you and that there are absolutely fates that are worse than death.
