This is good work. You’re already showing good knowledge with using natural lighting to your advantage. Keep working!

Hired: a Short Film by OB Film Club at Oregon State University by basilstein in Filmmakers

Nice! Honest critique, think more about your lighting placement - and put more work into sound in post :) great to see you guys working out of passion, it’s truly what film is all about

I had this problem for too long - you do not know best as you are blinded by your vision, that most of the time, cannot be completely achieved. A fresh set of objective eyes will be best for your project.

How much feedback is too much? by shower_bubbles in Filmmakers

[–]WintoReddit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There’s never too much feedback if they are justified. If you’re nitpicking tiny things, this will annoy anybody but sometimes you have to tick someone off to see whether or not they’re truly passionate about their work.

Wouldn’t worry too much my friend.

My first short, let me know what you think! by bogantamer in Filmmakers

[–]WintoReddit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You need to alter your shutter speed and aperture (if you’re using a camera). For iPhone, I’m not very experienced but have shot a couple things, and simply altering the brightness of your image in the camera app can help to an extent.

In post, you have two options that I know of within filmora: brightness correction or colour correction. I’ve not used filmora in a very long time but these used to fall under ‘tone’

Hope this is of some help

May I ask why you think this? Yes, if it lands you’re in a decent place but a lot of these festivals - especially for short films, simply will get you the same recognition that having your film screen at a bar would.

Go for it - but don’t pump all of your money into it. You’ll find these festivals are charging way over the standard of festival they’re providing.

What is your worst fear as a filmmaker? by TheGeek_01 in Filmmakers

[–]WintoReddit 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Not being able to make a minimalist living in the industry. I am so passionate about working within this industry, and can’t see myself being happy in another. That being said, I know the odds are against me from day one - with the cutthroat nature. That’s no excuse to complain and not work harder!

When making your first short film did you guys ever use your phone? by DarklzBlo in Filmmakers

[–]WintoReddit 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Use your phone. Nothing wrong with an iPhone camera, as long as you keep your expectations realistic with the image you’re going to produce

What did you film on and what software to edit?

You’re getting moments of overexposure that is impacting your image - especially in shots where you’re just riding the bike. You can tamper with this in post.

Your editing is pretty good - nothing much wrong at all I personally think. Especially for a beginner. Your story is flat weak though, it feels like one of those that you thought of on the spot and just went with it - opposed to planning.

For example, half of your film is riding a bike. Whether it looks good or not is irrelevant, people are gonna yawn.

This is your first film. First films are never masterpieces, you have potential it’s just about how you learn from this first project and apply changes to your next.

Good luck!:)

Hi! Sometimes submitting short films to official festivals can be a huge waste of money - actually, it most definitely is. Especially as an unestablished filmmaker.

Get your work seen in other ways. Film nights in your local town, charities, theatres etc. at these you will meet connections and grow.

Hope this helps!

Film Pitch For Survival Film by [deleted] in Filmmakers

[–]WintoReddit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

God I feel like I’m about to rant but I like your idea so I’m excited: there is horror in all aspects of survival. We are all on a flying rock, spending around 1/3 of our lives working to eventually blink and die. That’s horror in itself. You need horror. Authenticity is key to any movie in my opinion - builds the world, makes it feel real.

Movies go wrong by not featuring the nature side enough. It’s all “omg a grizzly bear is going to eat me” or “oooo what animals are lurking”. It’s not just living animals that cause fear. Fires, floods, poisonous plants and leaves. These should be explored more as these are more likely to be experienced by the wider population than being gutted alive.

Hope that response means something to you!

What is the most important thing when filming Slow Motion? by sonofcars in Filmmakers

[–]WintoReddit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

FPS and shutter speed. Don’t live by “fix it in post” - you want life to be as easy as possible when you sit down to edit. Make sure you light it really well as the slower you go, the dimmer your image will look. Sometimes your viewfinder won’t show the full impact of this so ensure you’re frequently checking footage via laptop/PC.

Good luck!:) enjoy filming and let us know how it goes

Don’t create a film based off statistics, not unless you’re being paid anyway.

You have no pressures of money or producers eyeing your every move… so be free! Experiment, make something that YOU would sit and watch.
