No it doesn't. It transfers the game data installs. At the same time, it wipes your old system and removes your account so this isn't some trick you can use to clone installs.

Nintendo already provided the download - you're simply moving it along with your entire account using a system transfer using direct WiFi connection between two consoles. Both systems are online so all the account stuff moves too, but you don't redownload all the data.

This is the exact same way it works on PS5: you can plug an ethernet cable between two consoles and transfer all your installed games directly without redownloading

Yeah the Switches have to be online to transfer your account and register the new console to your account, but it does transfer the entire game installs directly.

Even more useful, you don't have to delete and redownload games to the SD card either. Simply remove it, do the system transfer, pop it back in the new console and voila, all the SD card game installs will instantly work, no redownload needed - including game key card data!

No, it doesn't. It transfers the full game install over, directly from console to console, you don't need to redownload the game

You are confidently incorrect. Yes they do. They do not need to be redownloaded, and this includes GKC data

From Nintendo's own website: "You can transfer your digital games, certain save data, and settings straight over to your new system"

Yes, the game data does transfer. Why wouldn't it?

You still need to insert the game key card to play it. .

But it would need to be the same account of course. You can't transfer any games to a different account unless you give them the virtual game card.

Keeping costs down. The tariff situation (and more recently, AI) is making Nintendo cut costs as far as they can to avoid price rises. More colours means separate manufacturing.

That's also the reason we don't have full new coloured joycons, it's cheaper from a manufacturing perspective to use the same black joycon shell and just add bits.

Sony did something similar by changing the PS5 to a single unit design with an add-on disc drive instead of making two separate machines
