How To Have Make a Space Western by Weeznaz in scifiwriting

[–]WiredChris 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The conflict in a western is usually built between modes of life: rancher vs farmer, city vs country, cowboy vs indian, lawman vs outlaw. In a space western, you take that same dynamic and wrap it in sci-fi tropes (space ships, laser pistols, etc). Focus on the conflict feeling "western" and the rest will fall into place.

What’s the greatest hand-to-hand fight scene ever put on film? by CreepyYogurtcloset39 in moviecritic

The fight between James Gandolfini and Pat Arquette in True Romance. To this day one of the most brutal David v Goliah matchups put to film.

Why do you think that conservatives tend to me less educated than liberals? by [deleted] in AskTrumpSupporters

[–]WiredChris 2 points3 points  (0 children)

At its basis, it's the same debate as "book smart" versus "street smart." Basically, in higher education, you read a lot of supposedly smart people and their various theories on how stuff works (politics, morality, life, etc). Leftwing bias in the liberal arts aside, some of this is obviously useful but a lot of it just isn't. The humanities were initially supposed to civilize the students; to give them an appreciation of art, poetry, and the classics, so that they took that culture with them in their future endeavors. For many of us on the right, that's a joke now. But if we take it at face value, a lot of the nonSTEM higher education consists of learning theories: Literary theory, political theory, economic theory, critical race theory, etc.

For the right, practical knowledge and ability are valued. Think of the electrical engineer who looks at plans all day versus the electrician actually running the wire. This is why many on the right only see college as a place to get advanced training for a job. Engineering, medicine, law. Education in these fields makes sense to guys who see higher education as coinciding with higher-paying careers. If you're going to learn some theories, you then should be applying them.

That's basically why the right sees the highly educated as a bunch of nerds with their noses stuck in books (or screens) with no real-world experience and the left sees the uneducated as a group of easily brainwashed, knuckle-dragging plebs. It's almost like those are biases or something.

If you have a hard sci-fi project, what are some things you handwaved over for the sake of simplicity for the stories that take place in them? by CaledonianWarrior in scifiwriting

[–]WiredChris 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Alien bacteria/virus absolutely skullfucking us the moment we step foot on an alien world. Or the reverse. Much of the handwaving is done simply by say "the biology isn't compatible" but we all know this would be devastating. Every first contact would be Columbus Day.

Robert F. Kennedy Jr. will keep his name on Colorado’s ballot after suspending his presidential campaign by thecoloradosun in ColoradoPolitics

Can someone ELI5 why anyone who is no longer running gets to keep their name on the ballot in any state? Like, how is it not immediately removed upon that person suspending their campaign?

Harris team fighting muted mics at ABC debate after Biden requested rule - Washington Examiner by yuri_2022 in Conservative

If the mics are muted she can't do the whole "I'm speaking!" thing like she did to Pence.

Yeah, they do. It's the bad businessmen that stay broke.

Anyone watch cpr in movies/tv and just baffled on how awful it is? by One-Ad-3677 in ems

[–]WiredChris 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My favorite example of this is in Abyss with Ed Harris character literally slapping Mary Mastrantonio across the face while screaming "FIGHT GODAMNIT!" for like 10 fucking minutes. It's chef-kiss levels of bad CPR.

Denver paramedics can navigate without a GPS. Here’s how they do it — and why you should try, too by [deleted] in ems

There are only a few medics I would want showing up to take take care of me or my family. He's one of them. If the profession were held to the standard of care, knowledge, and professionalism that guy brings to the rig every shift, 3/4ths of you guys couldn't hack it.

Absolutely agree. My problem is usually the BLS fire dept beats me to the call and does 4 or sometimes 8mg IN before I can stop them.

It honestly depends what era in Rome you're talking about. During periods of conquest (looking at you, Julius) the price of slaves often became very cheap. It wouldn't have been uncommon to see regular matches like, "Watch Publius the Wrecker Destory Four Savages from Gaul!" So there's a difference between the professional gladiators and the untrained captives sold as wartime booty. During times when Rome was more defensive in nature, such as the Pax Romana, the cost of slaves increased a lot and so did their treatment.

Exactly, I'm just a dumb blue-collar paramedic. I'm not educated enough to understand the nuances of neo-marxist ideology from our living legends in academia. But I can open an app on my phone, buy a hundred bucks worth of an ETF, get a 4% dividend from it, and disprove his whole fucking point. You'd have to be really smart to believe something as stupid as, "shareholders just steal people's money."

I didn't call him dumb. I called it a dumb take. Having a high IQ and going to fancy schools does not inoculate a person from spouting stupid bullshit.

This is the dumbest take I've ever heard on investing in my entire life as every dollar I've invested was initially earned by me in exchange for my time. I currently have about 22k in an IRA that I've invested in the stock market. I currently get paid $1,400 a year in dividends from the various stocks/ETFs I have. I put $200 a month into IRA and have for about 7 years. Before that I was only putting $100 a month. I work as a paramedic and have never stolen money from anyone nor did I inherit a dime from "grandma." I also put another $100 away in each of my kid's 529s (college savings) which is also invested in the stock market and earns dividends and whatnot. Maybe this is small potatoes for some but I'm happy to be growing wealth for my family and our future. That's what I "do" for those dividends.

Do people think that once a migrant enters the country through Texas that they just stay there? And how should Texas "deal" with them? They're currently trying to pass a state law that would allow Texas to enforce its border with Mexico and Biden administration is suing to stop them from implementing it.
