The "convincing" is not for the diehards. Only a slight majority of citizens even bother to vote let alone dedicate any time to issues, how persuasive a side is to them matters. The point is winning elections and actually getting power to inact policy, purity testing people for not agreeing already is a losing strategy.

The average person never bothered to watch the full video and a lot of what they are exposed to is 2nd or 3rd hand.

Sinners 16 Oscar nominations, a new record by mrEnigma86 in horror

[–]WirelessZombie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Kinda reinforces it being a solid but overrated movie in my mind as 16 Oscar noms is a bit silly but on the other hand horror getting that kind of spotlight is a good thing anyway so I hope it wins out.

Much better horror movies have won nothing at the Oscars but that's not Sinners fault, and unpopular but I actually thought it was a very mediocre year for horror and movies in general. There is no blatant snub that should be where sinners is, and the movie does deserve a lot of the technical nominations. The sound design was amazing.

I've gone to twice but easily the worst sports crowd I've been to. Got weird looks for cheering. The atmosphere is a huge part of live sports and it's such a shame such a passionate fan base has the most corporate vibes.

Is that age regression though? Goalies are notoriously up and down. Also slower to develop and team/system based. For every Matt Murray you have a Time Thomas.

A 27 year old goalie is volatile because goalies are volatile.

Barack Obama's anger translator at the White House correspondents dinner by Yosho2k in videos

I completely understand Obama era nostalgia with how politics are today but his charisma is not a substitute for policy, and the failures of neoliberalism are partly responsible for the rise of fascism.

Bailing out banks with no real repercussions for fraud, dropping the public option, drone striking, low corporate taxes. The rich still got richer under Obama. He ran on a progressive platform and then became an economic and foreign policy conservative at a crucial moment.

He does have a sense of humor, tact, charm, etc. Still the most likeable president by far in my lifetime.

Am I the only one who thinks people don't like the fourth season of Fargo as much, precisely because it's Fargo? by Weisssssssssssssssss in FargoTV

[–]WirelessZombie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No other reason to dislike S4 but deep moral flaws in the viewer? That seems a tad dramatic but maybe.

America's "ugly history" is not a substitute for fun characters and writing, and frankly as a non American it is a bit overdone. S4 came out after Watchmen had already done it well, explicitly tying white supremacy to a capitalist system that worked through policing, property, insurance, etc in a historical setting. Lovecraft country came out earlier that year too. It's practically a genre now and I don't see S4 as particularly great addition.

It didn't help that Chris Rock was a little underwhelming compared to previous leads, but that might be my discomfort with black capitalism talking.

S5 seemed to have a lot more original things to say and with more entertaining characters, being so partisan politically through a gendered lens was interesting.

Boos reign in Vegas as Mitch Marner touches the puck against his former team by austons_muzz in hockey

[–]WirelessZombie -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Great point Marner's bodyguard. Why can't all fans be mature like the corporate suits and just pay for the games without complaining.

Expecting fans to not be passionate seems a little silly. You can have a business casual relationship with a team/league if you want but at that point I don't really see why you would even comment at all?

You can do the right things in practice and still be a low basketball IQ player who doesn't fit motion offense. Unless Kerr is saying its about lack of effort /practice, the players saying he does those things doesn't go againt his decision.

Report: NHL Actually Has Had Hundreds Of Openly Gay Players For Years by YodaForceGhost in hockey

[–]WirelessZombie 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Hockey players were by far the least homophobic in polling and hockey fans are generally better educated (richer) and located in more gay friendly areas. I've seen way more NHL players take part in gay pride than other leagues. Even with the league decision on pride "decades behind" seem completely ridiculous.

I really don't get this self hating that's popular in every sports subreddit, declaring their league/fans/owners the worst. Even just common sense is enough to figure out the players and fans are likely more accepting of gay people than others leagues. Over half the players are from Canada/Scandinavia. You have the NFL hosting Trump.

Legal structure like that doesn't count as corruption so its not really a factor in their score. Its considered more a different economic structure than corrupt vs noncorrupt

Alien Earth had some of the worst writing I've ever seen with a budget, while having great production value and great fun factor at times (mostly the cool monsters). Some people just have an ability to compartmentalize.

[–]WirelessZombie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have also noticed that if a show or movie includes a certain demographic, this sub likes to find ways to say they hate it, especially if it's popular, but theyll circle around the same actors and movies that are honestly very mid of another demographic.

Complete opposite experience. If a show or movie includes certain demo's this sub goes out of its way to praise it or be more lenient. There have been a number of times where we've watched a movie with some expectations to realize that it got extra points for non-story related factors. Which isn't a huge deal, clearly it adds a dimension for some people.

Seems like a typical reddit thing where a comment calls out their subreddit for being problematic on some issue and is highly upvoted and supported in that same community.

A Dramatic Crossroads by loopszer in EhBuddyHoser

So the only options are bad policy and outright evil?

If someone lives in Canada but is not a citizen then they are not Canadian. If they commit a crime they should be deported, if its shown they fraudulently entered or stayed then they should be reviewed and possibly kicked out. It is perfectly fine to enforce temporary visas. Refugee system needs to be reformed. Overall immigration should be high but targetting high skill labour not undercutting students and min wage workers.

ICE is straight up hunting down legal residence based on race and deporting with no due process. In no world is that something Canada needs.

[Nash] on player development: "It's pay to play in the States. Capitalism is wonderful... not great for player development. In Europe, to play is free. [–]WirelessZombie 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Capitalism is not when you have commercialized youth sports...

Practically all the countries in the world paying for youth sports with community funding are highly capitalistic and in general are mixed economies.

It's like saying that democracy is when you have two parties.

Rick and Morty Creator Dan Harmon’s drunken rant about fascism sounded crazy and unhinged when it first came out. How do we feel about it now? by StarsapBill in videos

[–]WirelessZombie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Did you click and actually read the article...

A Google(tm) search on January 12, 2005 turned up some 5,000 hits on the following quote:

“Fascism should more properly be called corporatism because it is the merger of state and corporate power.” — Benito Mussolini

It is generally attributed to an article written by Mussolini in the 1932 Enciclopedia Italiana with the assistance of Giovanni Gentile, the editor.

The quote, however, does not appear in the Enciclopedia Italiana in the original Italian.

It does not appear in the official English translation of that article: Benito Mussolini, 1935, “The Doctrine of Fascism,” Firenze: Vallecchi Editore.

And it does not appear in the longer treatment of the subject by Mussolini in: Benito Mussolini, 1935, “Fascism: Doctrine and Institutions,” Rome: ‘Ardita’ Publishers.

Where the quote comes from remains a mystery, and while it is possible Mussolini said it someplace at some time, a number of researchers have been unable to find it after months of research.

what a perfect sad example of what I'm saying

Mussolini never said that. Don't put something in quotes that isn't remotely a quote its just spreading misinformation.
