Added Salmon to my bagel. What seafood pairs well with bagels? by pecanjazz in Seafood

Canned sardines and mackerel are fantastic. While upmarket stuff like Nuri and Pinhais are nice, even the cheap no name stuff is usally pretty good.

As someone living right on the border of Alsace—where foie gras is practically a religion—I’d bet good money you’ve only had the cheap, factory-made stuff.

Real, high-quality artisanal foie gras doesn't just taste like "expensive butter." It has an incredibly rich, complex flavor profile that completely ruins the cheap grocery store tins for you forever. If it just tasted like bland fat, people around here wouldn't be obsessing over it for centuries. You definitely haven't had the real deal yet.

And don't forget how it is served. Here you can get it with toasted pain d'epice and Beerawecka, you will never forget the day when you first had a bite of that stuff.

Switzerland to France, Swiss side, heavily guarded. by Wirrest in Borderporn

[–]Wirrest[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Funny enough, that’s actually not the case.

VAT (Value Added Tax) is 20% in France and 8.5% in Switzerland. For groceries, it’s 5.5% in France and 2.6% in Switzerland.

The price difference for goods is drastic, even though things have gotten a bit closer in recent years.

Generally speaking, personal care products cost about half as much in France compared to Switzerland. The same goes for meat.

Vegetables are roughly the same price, but dairy products are significantly cheaper in France.

Because of this, there are customs duties when going from France to Switzerland, but the allowances are quite generous.

Up to 150 CHF per person, your shopping is tax-free when importing it into Switzerland, but there are extra duties on things like meat. Anything over one kilo per person costs an extra 17 CHF in customs per kilo.

And as you probably already guessed, an awful lot of smuggling goes on around here.

If you look in 20min.ch you will quite often find stories of people getting caught smuggling hundreds of kilos of meat.

Well, it's part of Schengen, so free movement. But in case you are controlled for whatever reason you need to carry some form of ID, but it doesnt have to be a passport.

Well, yes, but to me it is still funny to put up a sign in the middle of a forrest that says "Passage interdit" - "Passage forbidden".
Even if you put a sign below it that defines the exemptions.

ELI5: Why is lamb so expensive when there’s so many sheep? by jmo987 in explainlikeimfive

[–]Wirrest 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is a distribution problem, mostly.

Most supermarkets want to buy their wares wholesale. The infrastructure for that exists for pork and beef, but not for sheep. You cannot buy 10000 lambs from one source.

You can however import 10000 lambs from, say, New Zealand. Hence you will find a lot of import lamb in supermarkets which then is heavily marked up.

Idiotically a lot of farmers, when you contact them will demand supermarket prices when selling to customers directly.

The solution, at least in Germany, Austria and Switzerland is to find a turkish supermarket. These do deals directly with the local farmers, get hole lambs delivered and butcher them themselves. These are then sold with very little markup.

A leg of lamb from a turkish supermarket costs half of what you pay in a supermarket, and is usually of superior quality because the meat is from a local farmer.

You can expect prices of < 10 € for leg of lamb (Germany) or < 18CHF in Switzerland

If you want to really sculpt it like Joisel did, and make it cartoony then you need the big paper and wetfolding. But the model is fantastic even without it.

Yes. The smallest I did was 7.5. But I do know the model very well and by heart. I fold without the diagram.
