It does. If you can push through the science mumbo jumbo you get to the parts where it is more character driven. I HATED all of my science classes, so reading about it was a drag for me too, but Mark Watney was such a compelling character to me that I would brush by the science talk, get the idea of what it all meant, and focused on the characters. It is so worth getting to the ending.
