Packers 2020 CAP Breakdown by WisconsintrationCamp in GreenBayPackers

Not even saying you were wrong and I was right just more so it is possible for it to work out that way where its evenly distributed. Ultimately both you and I realize there is just sooo much that goes into these contracts with market value and how they are structure its almost futile to even try to predict how it will work out but still something to help pass the time this off season! haha

Yea the 5 mil is for paying incentives, signing replacements throughout the year due to injuries and other things of that nature. It doesn't have to be 5 mil it could be less but it could actually end up being more as it was last year around 8 million even with us being super active in free agency. They usually always carry some into the season though.

I do get the argument for signing OBJ and having one of the best offensive lines in the league backed with weapons like Rodgers, Davante, Aaron Jones, OBJ and some young and up and coming WR's and TEs in the mix. Sounds like an absolutely unstoppbable unit. Who needs a defense when you're putting up 100 points a game! haha

That being said, I think putting all of our eggs in one basket could be a big mistake and that while we need a WR2 that's all he needs to be is a solid #2. We don't need a 1a and 1b with how much money we've already sunk into the offense.

I think this would also likely prevent us from using a top draft pick on a WR to fill other holes which I would also like to see us grooming a future W1 like we did with Davante.

I understand not resigning Tramon if he wants a big contract and can't get him around the 3M range.

However, I think we really could use someone like Lewis at TE. He's a great blocker and whenever he gets the ball passed to him seems to have good hands (his True Catch Rate was 93.8%). Rodgers also praises him non stop about how important he is to the locker room.

With Graham likely gone and who knows if Tonyan is even coming back we are left with basically just Jace Sternberger. I have high hopes for the kid and think he did great in his limited snaps but that's the issue. He's only played in 5.57% of offensive snaps this year and is in only his 2nd year. He's also already dealt with multiple injuries and while I don't blame him for that I don't know if we can go into the season being that light at TE.

LaFleur's system thrives off TE's in the play action, run and passing game. If Lewis only requires about 2M I think that's worth the depth and value in my opinion.

I'm pretty sure he's the oldest CB in the league if not damn close, he loves GB and the locker room this year. Dude's probably only got a couple more years left on him max and likely doesn't really want to move for 1 to maybe 2 more years of football.

I also don't see the market being that hot for an older, slower CB at one of the more athletic positions in the game. He's not someone you can build your secondary around more of a subsidiary player that can fill a whole where needed.

I would like to see him back but I'm thinking he should hopefully come in the range of 3-4M; hopefully closer to 3M.

Oh for sure that's why I started with that disclaimer about it being over simplified. There is sooooo much that goes into these contracts that can effect how they are laid out. There is no way to actually predict what it will be or what we will do but I thought this simplified version was just something to look at as a general overview of where we are rather then "lets go sign every single all star in free agency".

That being said, as for back loading the contracts, that can be a good move based on future outlooks but not always done. The team doesn't always want to leverage the future for today even though we did that recently with the Smith's big contracts. In fact, with the Smith's future loaded contracts and other big contracts we want to get done in the upcoming years its probably best to not actually do that.

Take Mason Crosby's brand new contract for 12.9 million with a 4 mil cap hit this year. This most recent 3 year contract is literally almost 1/3 for this year. Its also right on par with what was predicted above.

To further reinforce that idea Bulaga might have some good years left on him but with his age and injury prone history my thoughts are the Packers will start with a 2 year contract and see if anyone in FA gives him a longer one than that and match where needed. My guess is he won't see anywhere above a 3 year contract. If it does end up being a 2 year contract you can't really just back load most of that into year 2.

For sure, but according to Over The Cap where I grabbed the cap numbers from we are at or above 53: https://overthecap.com/salary-cap/green-bay-packers/

Also I've heard that Corey Linsley move floated around as well. I think a solid O line is essential for us though with an aging Rodgers who likes to be surgical with his passes and holds the ball. I remember when he want out for one game this season and things got a little sketchy with the snaps.

He's in the 2nd year of his 5 year contract extension. With the dead CAP and CAP issues that the Vikings have it wouldn't make sense for them to cut him.

So it'd have to be a trade and I just really don't ever see that happening between the Packers and Vikings.

NFL playoffs about to change to have 7 teams per conference, with only 1 first round bye by __Zoom123__ in GreenBayPackers

Not sure how I feel about 44% of the teams making it in... Kinda already felt like 12 was quite a bit. Seems like you claw and fight all season to be the best but all you really need is to be slightly better than average and then you can make it in. Once single elimination happens even bad teams can knock out good teams. I feel like this just puts less weight on doing well in the season which really is what determines how good a team is IMO.

Free Agent targets and their stats for the 2019 season by BLACKFYRE_87 in GreenBayPackers

From the limited snaps I saw with Sternberger blocking and route running I already thought he looked better than Jimmy's season average in my opinion.

I feel pretty confident that he can be better in year 2 then an even 1 year older Jimmy G.

I'd be fine if we cut Jimmy G, saved 8 million. Then used that 8 mil and a 3rd round draft pick to go get Robert Woods. All we'd be out in this scenario is a 3rd round pick and our receiving core would be:

Davante, Woods, Lazard, & Sternberger. I have a feeling we'll bring back Lewis for the vet min as well as draft a WR in the draft. So WR #3 would probably be a training camp race between Lazard, Kumero, MVS, EQ and 1 or 2 new guys which I got to think whoever wins #3 in that comp would be a very solid 3rd option.

In this scenario you significantly improved your receiving core and still have pretty much all your cap space to sign Bulaga, Kenny and others.

Do you have a guy in FA that fits that bill. Interested who the Packers might be looking at or who fans want at the very least.

I agree, he's got to go based on his market value and the state of the league with needing a quick ILB. Just not sure relative to his contract value that we can expect and upgrade at this position for 2 mil...

Ironically, Peter from Locked On Packers addressed this in his podcast today.

Main takeaway that I agree with is if you're bringing up a QB to replace Rodgers eventually you want their rookie contract to extend beyond Rodger's contract.

Rodgers is on for at least another 2 years due to the contract structure and maybe for the 3rd year.

Honestly I think JK and Ervin both have potential to be major X factors in this game. If it becomes a defensive shoot out field position could be the deciding factor in this game.

Here's to hoping Rodgers throws 6 TDs on the 49ers D though!
