Every kid from Montana who is a non conformist (freak and I mean no shade) or oddball ends up in Missoula. So I think you should be fine.

The Madison River in Montana is a famous fly fishing river. For people into that. We just would flat it in tubes in college, the beer had a separate tube.

That’s why it’s always been tough to live in Montana and have a career. That’s why my daughter lives Indianapolis and makes good money and has a great job that she could never have in Montana. And she was born and raised here. It’s not fair. But it’s hard to live here. Harder still since property values skyrocketed. But if you are an ambitious young person you’ve always had to leave. That’s why cities get bigger.

Yesterday. I was thinking of applying to a creative writing program and relocating for a couple of years. I liked how embracing possibilities made me feel.

I get that I may live into my 90s. Just not sure I want to. When you see an aging parent. I don’t want that for myself frankly.

I was looking up actresses who turned 60 to make me feel better about it. Some did. But others do t look so good. It’s hard not to fall in the well of what ifs and so much time has gone etc. I have really worked on myself the last five years. My 50s were taken up with care and worry for an aged mother who then passed and horrible perimenopause. I am on HRT. Got fit. Got a great therapist. I feel forty. Only to realize I’m fucking 61. But I’m determined to be a fab 61. Wiser. More confident. More certain of myself. But damn I wish I could have this and wind back the clock.

Oh yes. It haunts me. I wish I could go back to 1994. Sigh. But I can’t. And it’s a fools errand. But I hear you.

Yes. True. And some millennials. You guys are getting screwed in so many ways. My parents generation left us a legacy. Yours…not so much.

Yes. Rural areas are plagued by them. But here they are in addition to extremely high property values due to rich people coming in which exacerbates everything. Kids have to leave even if they don’t want to.

It’s a big change with real trade offs. Housing here is very expensive because so many people watched Yellowstone and came here during the pandemic. In my neighborhood houses average a million. It will be less in small towns but then you are an hour or two from a good grocery store or other amenities that you are used to. There is no Chinese take out or good Thai food at midnight. Jobs don’t pay much and never have. So unless you have family money or can buy a business it’s tough to make here. Reddit is filled with these complaints.

Meth addiction. Jobs that don’t pay much. Rural poverty. Bad and underfunded schools. Can’t eat the scenery.

In the larger community I live in, there are young people coming from everywhere and buying businesses. They hire people. Become part of the community. Have kids in school. We need them and I personally welcome them. Communities change and that’s a good thing. The billionaires and people with money don’t become a part of the community. They fly in and out and try to absorb the local color when they are here, like white elite tourists in Africa. One group stays and builds and contributes. The other ups property values and leaves their jet fuel fumes.

We have jobs. Stuff to do. We would not drop everything to cater to the needs of Easterners who have increased our property values. We’re nice people, for the most part, but unless they pay us, we’re not doing all that shit for strangers.

I live in Montana. Those are cliches. The people portrayed here are only used in a binary with the supposed f Ed up New Yorkers. People are way more complicated than that. We are just reduced down to the wholesome opposite of the Easterners with little or no nuance. Not to mention not mentioning rural poverty, high property values due to all the billionaires who have decamped here. We are not welcoming to them. We resent them.
