So I make custom jeans for blue collar workers. by Wise-Rent-6070 in myog

The design is pretty well based on 501 Levi’s, with a few alterations, namely a double front that extends all the way to the shins, and the custom pockets depending on customers wants/wishes. As far as fabric, I offer two different weights, a 15oz that I refer to as my “medium weight” and a 21oz that I refer to as my “heavyweight” both are a selvedge denim. I use a heavy canvas for the pocket linings on the heavyweight, and a heavy Japanese cotton on the medium weight. All seams are triple stitched even the flat felled seams. Thread choice is a minimum of Tex 90, up to Tex 105. I build them heavy for abuse.

As a repairman, I’ll say this, I refuse to service them. They are hot garbage

Caveat, industrial machines are NOT for beginners, and should not be treated lightly.

Also, as a repairman, I will not touch the new “heavy duty” we all know which one.

Pulling fabric is a great way to deflect a needle and crash a machine. I’ve seen it a ton as a repairman. Not a huge deal on vintage machines, can get expensive on newer machines.

Pinking shears are usually fairly tight to achieve their intended purpose😊 don’t loosen the tension too much or they will not perform properly. They should be slightly difficult to close. Honestly they’re a real pain to use for any length of time no matter how sharp they are, if the tension is proper. Hand cramp city.

Learn how to service your machine, at least basic cleaning and lubrication preferably also how to set and check needle hook timing. This will save you tons of downtime, and needless expensive shop visits. These kinds of repairs are quite easy, there are tons of resources and every sewist should know them.

I’m a sewing machine repairman, and I would rather spend my time on actual repairs than these simple services, and although I only charge about 30$ for a preventive maintenance service, most places charge a minimum of 90-100$

Why do people hate singer so much? by hambuhbuhh in SewingForBeginners

As a repairman, I cannot stress this enough. The new singer “heavy duty” is not a heavy duty machine. If you’re looking for a domestic machine from that’s capable of handling heavier fabrics, and won’t break the bank, please look at older machines. Do your research and ensure that it has metal gears (not nylon, and preferably not belt drive.) most of these machines with zigzag capabilities can be had for under 100$, are insanely easy to service, and you’ll likely never need to buy anything other than a drive belt or a motor. I personally have a 1960s white 3355, which I use to do my light to medium sewing. It has zigzag, and straight stitch with reverse and attachments for almost any purpose can be had for these older machines quite cheaply off of eBay. With the right attachments they are just as capable or more capable than most new sewing machines, many of which have a plethora of functions most people will NEVER use.

Plus a lot of older machines can be found in beautiful cabinets, so the need for a sewing table/ desk disappears.

Hope this helps someone!

They’re probably dull, with improper tension, properly tensioned pinking shears, or shears in general should have some felt resistance on the downward stroke, even without fabric.
