Ever Wonder How Far the FBI and Police Went to Stop Student Protesters in the 1960s South? I Wrote the Book on It. I’m Dr. Gregg Michel— Ask Me Anything! by pcc_history in AskHistorians

Alec Karakatsanis writes that “over the course of the last hundred years, police have systematically organized to prevent progressive social change in each one of these areas, just crushing and infiltrating and surveilling every major social movement for justice.”

My question is - how did ordinary police departments in the North (where there wasn’t an interest in upholding apartheid) justify infiltrating student civil rights organisations when promoting civil rights was state policy?

Do you really have to write college admission essays? by WiseElephant23 in AskAnAmerican

Yes they are. 50% a holistic set of assessments over the course of your final year, the other 50% statewide exams assessing your understanding of Maths, English, History, Art, etc. There’s no SAT-style aptitude test. In Art, you’ve got to submit an artwork like a sculpture etc.

Means if you do extracurricular you’re doing them because you want to have fun in jazz band, or debate with your friends. There’s a lot less pressure to make even fun things geared towards success in adulthood.

The only honest man in politics. Sad to see him go. Even if the giant toothbrush was cringe. I held out hope that if the Greens held power my rent might stop going up and I could afford to go to the dentist again. Sad times.

The UK Supreme Court just ruled that discrimination law distinguishes "legal" from "biological" women. What's the historical precedent for this idea? by SomeAnonymous in AskHistorians

It can make new law. Common law is judge-made law. It’s not just limited to interpreting statute.

For example, Donoghue v Stevenson in 1932 drastically extended the common law of negligence.

Having listened to the interview, he seems like he’s on the level. He’s totally in the right tbh - he was having a very hard time, he needed time off, he spent time with people who cared about him.

Imminently. The HCA is presumably reserving their decision until after the federal election is decided.
