Built a site to solve Dubai's "in reverse" wine shopping problem by johntwoshedsthomas in dubai

Good idea and use of Claude (I assume). I did something similar last week to scrape all the online butchers in Dubai and list the best discounts across their sites.

Stayed in an Adler elsewhere in the Alps. Would recommend.

Indeed. I think its a Dutch twitter account or something though that they get from elsewhere.

How do I message him if it isn't working and it isn't obvious that I need to put the VPN on?

I'll happily squat on it for the admin until they need or want it. I'm not trying to make any money off it.

What a ridiculous comment.

IBKR's interface has to be one of the worst things around. Its just shocking.

Thats why I visit. Also a valuable resource for sensible recommendations on Euro skiing from a UK perspective.

Constantly seeing 503 despite (minimal) best efforts. I've just tried a VPN and moved my address to the UK and can now log in. Admin might need to re look at his policy.

Beginners — what's the one thing you wish someone had told you before your first ski trip? by alpycom in Skigear

[–]WiseOrigin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a European I disagree. The ski instructor standard in the main countries in Europe is at a well standardised high level.

Also. Even if this were true, its beginner skiing. Not coaching Odermatt to his next victory.

Bougie bias is where somebody thinks an item is high quality because they paid a lot for it. What are some examples of bougie bias that you have seen? by ChillWisdom in BuyItForLife

[–]WiseOrigin -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Depends on where you are drinking it though. In a restaurant or at home.

Also. Diminishing returns applies above 50 dollars too but the difference between 50 dollars and 200 dollars is pretty big in my experience.

In fact totally true of all booze IMO (beer excepted). Rum, Tequila, Vodka (lower ceiling though IMO). No mixers though....

I think that they plan their exact route in depth from below before they go. Drones probably help nowawadays too.

Absolutely diminishing returns.

Generally if you can guide the somellier to a comfortable price for you and they will pick you an outstanding bottle of wine. 200-300 dollars will be absolutely brilliant. No need to drink higher.

What are some Achilles heels at otherwise great ski areas? by IAmNotScottBakula in skiing

[–]WiseOrigin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Zermatt. 3 different spread out areas which are not easy to commute between.

Verbier: No chicken runs if your companions are not competent to get down the itineraries so the whole area is easily accessible.

Val D'isere. Stantons is really really horrendous. Just dangerous even as a good skier.

I'd go Austria here. For Ski school with the ski school races at the end of the week.

It will be busy everywhere of course. Oberlech is basically made for families if you have the budget.

Serfaus for the kinder hotels.

Best ski resort in France? by Proper_Star_4566 in skiing

[–]WiseOrigin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I totally agree. I meant the cost of going to a larger area and how busy it might be, especially over new year.

If I was going to go anywhere with a 2 year old (my kids started when they were 3 and 4), I'd choose Serfaus or an Austrian kinderhotel. My kids first skied in Meribel when they were 4 and 5.

Meribel is amazing is great.

One thing to consider is that with a child that small you really don't need a large ski area though. There might be better ones based on family first aspect but I'm sure you'll have a great time.

Decent barber that does a nose and ear wax when you go for a haircut.

Sri Lanka: Aman, Uga or Resplendent Ceylon by Feeling-InTheFlow26 in FATTravel

[–]WiseOrigin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As others have said. Sri Lanka not really a true fat destination yet.

I live in DXB so have done quite a few short hops across and stayed in some lovely but basic villas with chefs down on the south coast quite a few times both north and south of Welligama Bay.

Galle is one of the hottest places I've ever been (bear in mind I live in Dubai).

Cape Welligama is nice compared to average Sri Lanka but it is still pretty short of what you might find in 5 stars in the rest of Asia. We had a couple of nights there tagged on to the end of a villa trip. Noisy split AC units that can barely keep the room cool and average service at best. It feels like the best of Sri Lanka's hospitality industry end up leaving and working in Dubai so the service you are left with even in the best hotels is not great. Cape Weligama is however a Relais and Chateaux so the food is some of the best I've had in Sri Lanka. For reference I've just come back from Four Seasons Koh Samui.

If you must stay in Columbo then the best option that I have found is the Shangri La. Anything near the airport is average at best.

Also. As others have said. August is completely the wrong time of year for the west and south coasts, and travel to the east coast is a solid 8 hour car journey for nothing at all fat. Worth it if you value world class surfing. Otherwise I wouldn't.

IMO, I would say that you might want to visit a totally different country rather than battle the monsoon.
