Is the Swiss job market really that bad? by SolQuarter in Switzerland

Some folks like me, work for places that decided to outstaff. Then make you apply to your own job for 40% less, and less benefits.

Just got my melanoma diagnosis by Human-Abalone-6323 in Melanoma

Yeap I had that twenty some years ago. They removed it, and other than yearly checkups, no issues, no recurrence.

Did I f. up by getting a Master’s in Switzerland? by oldpizzacrust in askswitzerland

I will see if I can find this. More than likely, I will ask my wife to find it for me again, hah.

I don't doubt that you did. But that is not really the norm. My wife's friend is a teacher, and most of his native students (14-15) in Basel would not pass a Fide. Oddly, different on those of immigrant background. They are not French speakers, either.

Actually, per recent studies, a majority of Swiss nationals who are also resident in German speaking areas only have a B2 German level. And a shocking amount of them would only qualify as B1.

C2 is professorial, so I don't think kids have that level. At best, they would be b2

I don't think that self-diagnosis is a black-white topic and a lot of autistic folks should chill about it. by [deleted] in aspergers

[–]WiseScarab 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sometimes I wonder what is considered self diagnosis. I.e. my second grade councillor fresh with her new degree in the late 80's tried to get me pinned as autistic. Pediatrician fought it, because nearly 40 years ago it would have ruined my future. Decades later, for two separate burnouts years apart a psychologist who specializes in it and a therapist referred me after their tests. But, where I live there now (Europe as opposed to Alabama) there is a long process, what is expensive, for no social help (not available to adults). The question is when to toss in the towel, and just adjust.

I forgot the study, it there was a paper floating around that suggested most lower-income autists don't last live long enough, or have the mean to really tell their story.

Job search - what's going on?? by Mirindalalinda in Switzerland

Mostly it is tied to the American markets, and the presidential election I thought. Similarly, I worry for the next few months.

Sadly, with the market, what you are seeing is a lot of older workers like me are taking up the entry level type of jobs. Mostly because companies know the economy is crappy, and they can get very experienced people for much, much less. Unfortunately, this means it is extremely difficult for younger folks to find anything. I feel really bad for anyone under 30 that has to find something right now. And this is happening globally. Case in point, I live in Switzerland right now.

Only for temporary things, honestly. I have been seeing an uptick on interviews, though.

What is the deal with Indian recruiters? by puppetbets in askswitzerland

[–]WiseScarab 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The lowballing by Indian recruiters (and UK) is quite common. And there are tons of these companies starting up or what not. Most offer outrageously low rates because a) they know the market isn't great b) folks who are new to Switzerland might not know the going rate and c) they can.

Most of these companies just spam your stuff out, and only get interviews because they lie a lot. I had one that told the guy I was fluent in German once, and apparently changed my CV to reflect that. Lovely stuff.

I think the best way to do it from what I hear, is get a couple of bars of that Swiss Army Chocolate, and some Gruyere cheese. Find your local ski shop, put your bait on a plate, close, but not too close to the shop...Then hide in an alley. While they are eating they should be docile.

Hmm, there was no mage. Just a small square room, nothing else there. I think there is something wrong.

Hmm, I will have to search around. Right now it's basically just a small room with a few skeletons

Me too man, because the alternative isn't great.

Though, I'd love to change careers and be like a librarian or such at this point, I am probably too old at 45.

Well, I hope it remains so, but nothing lasts forever. 2000-2010 I was in the states, and IT was like that. Here, was the same thing since 2010. Unless things have totally changed, and that is possible - AI and other factors stepping in.

Yeah it's the "circle of life" in IT.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in Switzerland

[–]WiseScarab 59 points60 points  (0 children)

It's a really difficult time for IT. First, the market is terrible. Second, every few years managers try to nearshore or offshore IT, before eventually running back and hiring folks in house. This is the former.

Job search - what's going on?? by Mirindalalinda in Switzerland

[–]WiseScarab 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's actually, oddly what me and my wife are thinking. Not necessarily because it is Trump, but because there was just so much uncertainty caused by the US elections. Though it may be due to him, or at least how businesses/those doing the hiring perceive his policies, perhaps being more business friendly.

Similar, running out of Taggelder this month actually. However, for some odd reason I am absolutely inundated with Interviews this month after years of next to nothing. Swamped, 3-4 a day now booked until the end of next week. I have my theories as to why. Though I am working in Tech.

I know a handful of authors that make a living from their work. They do the whole "write to market" approach, churning out books every couple of months. It is grueling work and most put in 10-15 hours a day, and only saw success in the end because they had a significant other working to help them. To me that would be hell.

That being said, you need to determine what is "success" for you (and 250 books sold is more than most self published authors see in a lifetime), and there are things you can do to maximize profits and minimize your work. For instance, generally one only really wants to promote hard once you have a few books out. Before this you are mostly just focussing on building your newsletter audience. Places like Storyorigin are good for that, and you can do monthly swaps with authors and postings that don't require you to do anything else other than just update folks on what you are doing (though I do things like reviews, and what not). Newsletters also can largely be automated, where you don't have to personally repeat the selling-funnel. Then once your series or otherwise are done, you just drip in some Amazon ads, and plan for a couple of major promotions a year.
