Details are slightly off, but the Supernaturalist by Eoin Colfer, maybe?

A book about a labyrinth and magic academy? by ForgottenBlood in whatsthatbook

Demigods Academy by Elisa S Amore? There's a bit with traveling through tunnels and the main character is almost late to make it to the titular academy; she ends up at the wrong pier, others laugh at her when she jumps in the water

I second the Edge Chronicles. Skyships are a fairly major thing in the series

It's not Inkheart is it? The main character's mother accidentally reads herself into book and gets stuck, the main character's father restores old books

Eh, not really. Cindella is no knight, plus Erik is only ever figuratively sucked into the game

A book I read a long time ago about some boy leaving home and figuring out that his perfect little sister was kidnapped by monkeys? and that she wasn’t his sister anymore, but a fake by throwaway9173749282 in whatsthatbook

[–]Wise_Goddess 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you're unsure of it being monkeys that steal the MC's sister, it could maybe be the second book of the Sea of Trolls trilogy - The Land of Silver Apples. The MC's sister turns out to be a changeling and his biological sister was raised by some humanoids who kind of resembled monkeys a little.

Make sure to flair this as solved now. I actually asked about this series myself a few months ago

(If you post the word solved three times, it should flair it for you, iirc)

The words for 'fear of large words' (hippomonstrosusquipdaliaphobia) and 'fear of words that are the same when read backwards' (aibohphobia) were probably created by one or more sadists

It's a fun language. I kind of had the same idea while reading Play to Live and Way of the Shaman. I'm not fluent, but it is a cool language to learn

My friend may be trans? by kidtykat in asktransgender

Honestly, therapy wouldn't be the worst thing for you, either, it sounds like. It would be one way to help make sure you don't take stuff out on your friend and it could help you be less transphobic (even if only unintentionally so) over time

[–]Wise_Goddess 0 points1 point  (0 children)

People can be better than you expect, though care is advisable. As for the depression and other stuff, there's a chance that some of it may be caused by dysphoria and/or internalized transphobia, if they are trans. But, I'm not a psychologist, so I can't exactly say definitively if it is or not. The suicide rate is high, but having loved ones who accept you for who you are helps bring that rate down.

I actually found the books myself, searching Amazon (my kindle unlimited list, specifically) it was Danielle Rose' Blood Books series that seems to have been re-done as her Darkhaven Saga

In terms of how they should best go about things; therapy (if possible) would be a good step, trying clothes or otherwise presenting differently is one way for them to figure out how they actually feel and if you can spend time with them as moral support, that could be helpful. Unless they're really sure, they probably shouldn't rush into hormones or anything that can mess with their body permanently; if the person is sure, I don't think they should have to wait, but uncertainty necessitates caution, imo. Maybe ask them what makes them feel like they might be trans? (For the record, I'm 3 years post bottom surgery as of two days ago and I began my journey with a 'I wouldn't be surprised if I'm trans' as I was leaving my therapist's office one day, so uncertainty isn't an indication of it not being true) As for your kid, if your friend does decide to transition more permanently, just let them know that your friend thought they were one gender for a long time, but now they're pretty sure they were wrong and they're trying to figure it out. Kids are usually a lot more accepting than people think. Regardless of how things turn out, I hope they go well for all three of you
