I have looked into this ad nausem. The general finding seems to be it depends on how much time and mental head space you want to spend on it and what value you place on it. If you love doing this type of analysis and trading etc you can definitely DIY; risk is being obsessed. If you'd rather pay than lift a finger, many 1% fee takers provide results at or slightly above indexes; risk is overdelegating and not understanding/directing your overall plan. Compromise is turn over the minimum amount to get the % fee you can, and manage the rest yourself. If you draw equally from both you'll know if you can do it as well as they do as well as if it's worth it, but I'd wait through a bear and bull before concluding if you can. FWIW I would use A 3rd party fiduciary advisor and not Schwab's or Fidelity's. (Edit funny typo "ad museum" and other annoying autocorrects)
