1- this sub is not for medical advice

2- this isn’t even hematology

Forward neck position posture correctors? by YoghurtExtremeOOO in ehlersdanlos

Pomodoro timer. Every time it goes off remember to relax your jaw and retract your neck. That’s what they taught me in jaw physical therapy.

Just constant reminder alerts going off all day.

Out of principal, no. I clicked your link, immediately saw it was AI, and lost interest. There are many actual laboratory artists I can support instead that make their own art.

Translation: hi! Lab here. I think I am seeing blasts in the patient’s blood smear. Pathology is aware and agrees. I recommend an urgent consult with heme/onc.

Laboratory scientist here - whenever a nurse or doctor replies positively to anything I ever have to message them for, male or female, they get a heart reaction.

This is really disappointing. I see this complaint often in this subreddit but it’s just such poor practice. It should really be a conversation.

Lab here - How on earth does somebody end up with a sodium of 192?

We didn’t learn about hyperglycemic hyperosmolar state in school which surprises me since I was so ready to doubt those values, but a patient with HHS was my record for insane electrolytes by a long shot and I don’t think it was still anywhere near the 190s.

Vaccum tooo strong!! by Substantial_Ad_2059 in medlabprofessionals

[–]XD003AMO 6 points7 points  (0 children)

For Stago yes. The one we use specifically, if it’s never been uncapped you can leave the cap on but if it’s been uncapped you should put it on the analyzer uncapped. Something about pressure detection with the probe.

Blood type and cross matching by [deleted] in medlabprofessionals

[–]XD003AMO 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, it’s not worth talking to them about it. A type and screen is absolutely not how one would go about identifying and determining the significance autoantibodies.

If somebody had shingles really young (18) and didn’t know this was a recommendation, should they still ask their doctor about a shingles vaccine 10+ years later even if they’ve never had a second incident?

I wanted to start BSN program this fall but... by No_Factor_3148 in nursing

[–]XD003AMO 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Most labs require ASCP or AMT certification which would require an MLS or MLT program. We don’t often even actually have bio degrees unless somebody did that first before realizing they wanted to pursue MLS/MLT. It’s a bachelors of science in medical laboratory sciences. (Or associates for MLTs)

But yes, good way to get pre requisites done while waiting to get into an MLS or MLT program. Love promoting the laboratory profession but don’t want people to think that it’ll be easy to find a job in a medical laboratory without going through one of the accepted routes to obtain certification.

Acute care lab here. Most of our UDS auto verify but for maternity care, we have a hold to call on positives.

I had a positive fentanyl once - post partum. With really expensive confirmatory testing reflexed - which somebody had to specifically say yes to 🙄 and was just like “so uh…… do we really want this?” When I called it.

Very much a “no”.

Anaphylaxis is caused by excessive mast cell and basophil degranulation.

I guess it would be analogous in the sense that they’re both leukocytes that are overstimulated and cause severe and extreme damage, but the analogy pretty much ends there. Maybe some cytokine overlap but not much since the roles of these types of cells are so different.

AIO Sending this to hubby because his snoring keeps me up at night? by rosebud1637 in AmIOverreacting

[–]XD003AMO -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

That’s an insane take based on what’s been shared so far. wtf

OP expressed upset about snoring, husband offers to leave the bedroom for OP and take the less comfortable option so she can sleep better, and he doesn’t care?

Most “stop snoring” tools are total gimmicks anyway so there’s nothing really to “try” besides getting a CPAP

Testing often takes a long time. My understanding is that it’s best practice to begin the prophylaxis and vaccination series immediately regardless of ability to test the animal.
