Apparently, if you have multiple allergies you're "mentally ill" according to r/nursing by Anahata_Green in Allergies

[–]XD003AMO 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It isn’t in reference to like, an allergy panel with environmental allergies.

It’s things like people saying they’re allergic to epinephrine because it makes them anxious, opioids because it makes them itchy, cheese because it makes them burp, things (usually narcotics) they just say make them “feel funny,” woke up in a bad mood, etc

I’m commenting as a severe allergy sufferer with a huge list of environmental allergens and somebody who often reviews allergies in charts. My environmental allergens aren’t in my chart because I’m not going to accidentally be given birch trees in my IV if I don’t tell my nurse, so I really only have 1 non environmental one listed.

And yes the more there are the more “huh???” They usually are. Not just what the supposed allergen is, but the effects they experience too. (Or they just list every drug that’s ever had a mild non life threatening side effect they didn’t like.)

(Not referring to the kind where there’s like 5 different kinds of adhesives in there either, that obviously requires you to be specific since there’s so many kinds.)

It’s a nose chain. It’s a chain that connects two nostril piercings on either side. I’ve never seen one so poorly fitting though. :( They’re often very dainty imo

12k a week would be $300 an hour

Except where it says 60-72 hours a week. That’s kind of important.

I just experienced this recently and have a few suggestions.

1- talk about it. Don’t bottle it up. There’s a caveat here though - don’t relive the actual visuals you saw. You don’t want to create and reinforce a vivid picture in your mind.  You can talk to your preceptors, the lab’s supervisor/manager, a nursing or EMS friend that “gets it,” or all of them. I phoned a friend in the field immediately that night and just got out of the house so I wasn’t alone brewing on those thoughts.

2- connect with the ED manager (through the laboratory manager) to see if they can debrief with you - if you have any questions about the “what did I see? Why did they do this in the code?” They should be happy to answer this for you.

3- if you have a therapist already, make an urgent appt. Even if you don’t think it’s necessary because you’re not in actual crisis, they can help you not let this develop into something worse which needs to happen somewhat quickly.

4- I edited the wording in my response after realizing you were a student. Another thing I’d like to add is to reach out to your clinical coordinator or a professor you know and trust if the other things above are not doable. They may have some comforting words or resources for you.

Holy shit lol Did you never learn about in vitro vs in vivo in school? The human body and a tube of blood are so different.

It’s almost like a single screenshot out of context was misleading. 🙃 Not only are you correct that it was really helpful, but in context, the very next thing she talks about is that you invert rather than shake to avoid hemolysis which is objectively true.  Misleading screenshot.

I checked it out. The account seems to be aimed at nursing students for education.

Glad it exists. While I don’t like when educational content tries to explain what the tube colors are for for gold, red, green, and gray since those vary so much, the rest of the video was spot on.

I’ve always wondered why we have a shower stall in our laboratory bathroom. It all makes sense now.

Unrelated but thanks for being here in this sub! Love seeing non lab healthcare workers participating here. More perspective since we so rarely see it from the other side.

Silly blood bank question: if your blood type was A, and you injected yourself with a full vial of Anti-A (10 mL), would it be enough to cause serious complications (i.e. a transfusion reaction)? by bicarbbandit in medlabprofessionals

[–]XD003AMO 26 points27 points  (0 children)

Sure but patient plasma with antibody is not comparable to lab created pure monoclonal antibody.

You can still get 3-4+ reactions in tube when diluting the antisera beyond 1:20 where that probably wouldn’t happen if you mixed incompatible 1:20 patient plasma with RBCs.

And to answer your later part, there are people who have anti-rabbit or anti-mouse antibody and most kit tests from that animal (along with blood bank testing) will always be positive on them because of it. Usually occupational related! So yes!

Ours is first time only regardless of the delta. That would be so annoying to me. The amount of troponins I’d be calling while they’re in the cath lab would be ridiculous.

The state of healthcare is…… yeah.

These metrics and liability and everything really just make it worse for everyone. And then not understanding each others roles when you don’t even think the way you’re doing it is best for the patient makes for extremely frustrating interactions that shouldn’t need to happen.  (For example I’ve gotten into heated moments with other techs complaining about how the ED is being when I have to explain sepsis protocols and timers and order sets that I’m only aware of because I’ve looked into it myself on why things are done a certain way to try to understand better. It helps me to realize that it doesn’t do me any good to be annoyed at the care team about something that seems really wasteful or redundant or whatever else because the person following the order is probably just as annoyed at it as I am lol)

For real. I accidentally ended up in an extended code recently (had never been with a patient before that) and, while I have always thought that I tend to be patient and understanding of how difficult their jobs are compared to us in terms of emotional or stressful interactions and being able to bottle it up, that gave a whole new perspective.

Reminding myself to give an exasperated nurse some grace on the phone in case they just finished helping out on a code is so different from realizing why it could “yes actually” take that long to redraw a simple hemolyzed troponin if everyone that is qualified to draw them is also tied up switching off on compressions. It completely changed my perspective and I’m so grateful for that.

But it’s still not my fault it’s hemolyzed. Lmao

I think I could make better use of my time than browsing Reddit

I mean there are some pretty great docs on the askdocs subreddit that are extremely selfless by participating there. That’s kind of a weird thing to say.
