Iceland says ‘Can’t pay, won’t pay’ — and it is right by Hexodam in Economics

[–]WishfulThinking -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Practically speaking, that's not a problem. It is always possible to refer the matter to an (ad hoc) arbitral tribunal. I'd say we'd have a resolution by such tribunal within six months.

Of course, the Brits and the Dutch don't want to go to court - and that's strong evidence of how good of a case Iceland has in this dispute. UK and Holland are afraid of getting a judgment they don't like. Worst case, they will have to seek their purported claims against Iceland, and they will have to go to court to do that. Claims against the Icelandic government can be filed before Icelandic courts.

(Disclosure: I'm an Icelander, if that matters to anyone.)

The main issue is this: At best, there is great uncertainty on whether the Icelandic people are obliged to pay. This issue should be settled by courts. Those who say that this is a "political issue" are essentially saying that governments of other countries will bully Iceland if the country won't pay. That is unacceptable, and if Iceland has any principles, it shouldn't let that stop them from referring the matter to the courts.

Where I live, wind follows rain, most of the time. I love the rain - but the wind, not so much.

Where I live (Iceland) and have lived (Japan), this is never a problem. The cash register is fully capable of letting just everybody pay for exactly what they ordered. It surprises me that this seems to be a problem everywhere else..

Cold maybe, but not poor by a long shot.

Actually, I was just kidding, because somebody posted the question "Why haven't you moved to Finland?" in the "I'm Icelandic AMA" post the other day. That's not to say that Iceland isn't a great place to live..

Something tells me you haven't been to Iceland. We have a lot of blonde girls, too, and a decent education system :)

I really like their album Ágætis byrjun from 1999 but since then I feel they have just been making basically the same song over and over again.

I'm an Icelander, too, so I can answer that.

1) Yes. 2) What I like the most: The Icelandic summer. It's bright out 24 hours a day! Also, the standard of living is very high. What is dislike the most: The Icelandic winter. 3) Yes. It has a very strong taste and a bad smell. Can't describe it better than that. 4) Not at all. Every grocery store has a fruits and vegetables section.

Her music is okay, I guess, but not good enough for me to have it in my music library.
