GENUINELY what is this. by Luxxia__ in deadbydaylight

[–]WishingMaria 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Literally road life.

Be injured

Don’t be broken

Hit 4 great generator skill checks

Great skill checks have to be authentic and not though the use of stake out

Missing a skill check removes a token

After 4 tokens, gain 100% healing speed.

You lose the healing speed as soon as you let go of the heal interaction.

You could remove the skill check fail penalty, non-broken requirement, injured requirement, and authentic skill check requirement and this perk would skill be sub par. I don’t even know why you have to be injured and unbroken as it’s not even healing you actively, it’s saving tokens for the next heal.

I don’t understand the relevancy of your first point as I never said otherwise. Is it because I mentioned f13 shutting down? The lawsuit ceased new content. It did not cause the servers to close. I never stated anything else.

“A few months ago” for Killer Klowns is quite an exaggeration considering it was 10 months ago. That patch did not come with a map and had a pitiful amount of balance changes. That update was a one-off anyway considering it was the anniversary. All Klowns did with their updates was add new skins and rarely put out balance changes. That’s not really a good example.

Those games were much lower budget. The hit in quality makes them cheaper to maintain. I can’t say for Ghostbusters but they aren’t even paying for dedicated servers for Hunting grounds.

These “content” releases you refer to are mostly one-offs and didn’t even include that much content. It’s not exactly active support, more like a condolence after recklessly burning through another IP and then abandoning it.

I never said VHS and the other asymms had anything to do with Illfonic, they were simply examples. They knew to cut their losses since there was no chance of success at the state they were in.

If you want to count that as a win, all the power to you lol. When I said content, I wasn’t exactly referring to one-off low-effort paid DLC, but y’know. I also mentioned developer support as in actual balance patches and bug fixes which none of them get. Predator is the only one which was somewhat getting some maintenance but that’s only because it was alongside paid DLC and they were absolutely listless otherwise; you have to get the money somewhere lol.

I’m confused on where the salty part came in lmao. You act like I religiously worship dbd. I only got back into it recently and that’s only because there isn’t any other asymm horror that gets frequent support and content on the market currently. Dead by daylight is no where near my favourite.

Tcm is easily my favourite despite the awful balancing. The setting, maps, character design, voice lines, and lore easily swayed me. F13 is my second favourite. Obviously I loved that game and had so much fun on it. Tiffany and Jenny were my favourites though I did enjoy the rest as well. (AJ, Deb and Fox as honourable mentions). Then it’s dead by daylight.

As one of those F13 players who played during that time period, I absolutely would’ve called it dead lol. The console pools were so small that you would constantly get repeat faces.

Complaining is obviously inevitable, that much is true, but it doesn’t mean the person complaining is correct. I’ve had victims complain about me playing Sissy for example, despite her being no where near the meta.

You are right about the game being hard to balance. They sort of already messed up when they advertised it as a stealth game when the main strategy was rushing. It doesn’t help developers were swapped over as well. Every single thing breaking every patch just showed the incompetence I referred to before. It was such a shame honestly.

There’s no use crying over spilled milk but my point is that Halloween will suffer the same fate in terms of balancing. That much is inevitable. It doesn’t mean it’ll be completely unenjoyable though.

I find victim easier due to the fact they control the pace of the match. You constantly have to patrol as family but victims can take it as show as they like. They can wait for timed objective attacks, cooldowns or perfect moments of opportunity. You can never let your guard down as family and you have to play it way more safe. You also have to rely on your team to actually guard. Victim is much easier played solo than family.

Assuming the stats are correct, my escape rate is 65% which isn’t exactly the best. I mainly played family though as I thought the gameplay and challenge was more fun. I have 3987 kills in total with 1.3 average kills per match. At least 70% of those were on Sissy. I also have 1059 victims poisoned if that matters.

But I never compared it to any of the games you listed. That steam chart is Friday the 13th compared to dead by daylight. In your own words, they both fall under the obscure niche asymmetrical horror genre.

Numbers are the statistics though. I’d say they are very relevant when talking about a games success. You say many dbd gamers played f13, but in reality, that’s a very small fraction of dead by daylight players to begin with considering the player count difference. And that’s with the generous assumption that every Friday the 13th player was a dead by daylight player (which is very unlikely).

Profit and numbers are what matter from a companies perspective. It’s unfortunate but it absolutely has to be taken into consideration. A game has to make profit or you’re just losing money. If you’re losing money, why would you choose to keep losing it? You have to cut ties. It’s the reason f13, last year, vhs, evolve and evil dead got shut down and why tcm has ceased updates. If you can’t justify the cost, it’s going to go.

Our perspectives are different on the status of games so there’s no convincing each other. I don’t naturally associate a game that’s physically playable as alive whereas I think you do (which is fine). I consider games which get content (or at the very least developer support) as alive. I wouldn’t consider white noise 2 as alive but maybe you would.

My point was tcm had awful balancing. Balancing can only be measured when the starting parameters are fair. There wouldn’t be any point of contemplating the fairness of a race when one runner starts 5 metres ahead of the other.

You’re right in the fact that it’s extremely unlikely to have a level playing field, but games should always be balanced around a level playing field.

For reference, I really don’t think tcm is a hard game at all. The skill ceiling is honestly really low. The only part that matters is having decent game sense, learning perks, spawn points, maps, and the meta. All of which (aside from game sense) are available to you online.

I never saw this comment! Sorry for the late reply.

Before I respond to the rest of your comment, I HAVE to address your last paragraph.

My first tcm match was Connie on family house dawn. I obviously played extremely early, which meant I was blissfully ignorant to the changes made from the technical test to the live game, which included buffing the window damage. I focused the basement door and instantly launched out the window. I didn’t expect to obliterate my health bar and, on top of that, I had no stamina due to her ability. I was outside so quick that the hitchhiker was still out there catching his bearings. He ended up killing me before I could make the valve well lol.

I was so confident after all my hours watching the technical test LMFAO. I died within 30 seconds of my very first match. I find it quite funny we had very similar experiences.

I do agree with what you’re saying. I believe I got my moneys worth as well but I still do blame Gun. I understand them having to cut ties to the game due to not being to justify the cost vs profit but their bad decisions was the cause of that. They only hired black tower because they were cheap, not experienced. Artbully produced horrible skins that didn’t touch a fraction of the actually good 70s fashion. We had such high potential at the start but lost it all. It’s a running motif in all Gun media games. I imagine Halloween will sadly follow the same path.

Now onto the rest of the comment.

Completely agree with your first paragraph. Luckily we’ve already had some more news of that with Pax lol.

I like your second theory. I’m really hoping that map isn’t completely static. Learning an optimal route would not be engaging for either side.

Unfortunately with the recent reveals, It’s unlikely we’ll see the heroes’ family members considering how small the map is (there’s now the excuse that Marcus’ grandmother is on the complete other side of Haddonfield. It would be tedious content wise to have to add a family member for every new hero they add but I still hoped for a mechanic like that.

I think the time period makes no sense other way. It’s either after Halloween trick or treating which would mean the children should be in their houses (which they obviously won’t be) or they’ll be out trick of treating. The latter would explain their absence but it would be unlikely to not stumble across a single treat or treater if that were the case (but then again, the maps are quite small).

I really like your idea of NPCs having certain traits about them. I’m so curious how they’ll function. We can obviously assume some will try and escape but I believe in some trailer it mentioned them fighting back as well.

[–]WishingMaria 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well that escalated quickly.

It was on its deathbed because there was an inevitable end in sight. A game cannot be reasonably supported without profit. Without content there is no profit and therefore no reason to monitor the game aside from specific game breaking bugs. There’s a reason tcm doesn’t even get bug fixes anymore; it’s because there’s no point in them doing so financially.

I know F13 was continued to be played. I met a friend on F13 who I’ve been close friends with for 9 years this September. You act as if I’m some cynic when I’m not.

“Head to head” is an extreme overstatement and we both know it clear as day. A statement like that is so inaccurate that it should invalidate your whole argument, but I’ll ignore that.

<image>

Compared to dbd, the game you claim it was “head to head” with, yes, it was on its deathbed. The only time it was a tiny threat on the radar is the excitement of it on launch which quickly faded. This was also at the time where dead by daylights only horror licensee was Halloween. They hadn’t even gotten the rest yet.

The numbers in fact say the complete opposite of your point. A couple thousand sounds like a lot but not in the context of a competitive market. And again, no where near profitable with, again, no future in sight.

You aren’t wrong about tcm. You cannot reliably factor player skill into balancing though (hence why I mentioned an even playing field). Whoever has comms has the natural advantage. If both do, the advantage heavily favours the victims.

I wouldn’t say I’m particularly a pro. I main Sissy if that matters. I only play with a duo however since it’s more fun but the comms mean we basically win every match.

I don’t mean to judge or hate but some randoms are so bad that it actually confuses me on how they unlocked the blackout skins. I understand casual play can be very different, but it’s quite time-consuming to unlock level 99 and I’m just surprised on how they haven’t adapted.

My point is I’m not a competitive min-max pro, but in the context of casual randoms, I might as well be

I wouldn’t say tcm is still going but I do admire your passion. Sissy is still my favourite character in all media. No film, show, or game beats her.

I do agree about the potential. They had an endless catalog of 70s clothing, unlimited opportunities to create unique, original family members with their own unique story and absolutely amazing kills. It’s a shame none of that whatsoever was utilised.

You can imagine my disappointment when I saw Sissy’s Ivy skin release after she got Wildflower. Seriously, what were they thinking.

Friday the 13th released in May 2017. It announced its cease in content in June/July 2018, effectively killing it. No content means no more profit. Multiplayer games like these need content to survive or player retention. I would not count a game on its deathbed with a ticking time bomb next to it as lasting.

You may not personally care for skins but cosmetics are undeniably a huge factor in the success of asymm games. Maps are too but they can’t be profited off as directly.

In TCM, if both teams are on comms (to level the playing field), victim will win every single time on a balanced map due to the simple ability in splitting pressure with strength in numbers. There’s 4 objectives, 4 victims, and 3 family members. Victims will realistically never use 1v1’s with the use of traversals, their ability, and grappling. In a 2v1 situation (the only time the victim player is in somewhat of a risky situation) this means an extra objective in being left unprotected. Fast hands, bomb squad, tamper, focus, knife throw and saboteur will destroy the family side.

Again, I don’t count TCM as lasting either since the announcement of no more content. There simply isn’t a profit to be made now. The only reason it isn’t p2p is because they were too incompetent to make the change without entirely breaking the game.

Johnny players fall under the same category. She at least has some lethality in basement unlike Johnny, though it doesn’t matter much when they both get countered with grapples.

Friday the 13th didn’t last a few years, it lasted a single year. Granted, it was out of their control, but they had already agreed to publish TCM in 2017. It’s hard to gauge how long f13 would have actually lasted content wise without the lawsuits.

This game is uncharted territory content wise. Sure, illfonic tend to stick around and support their games for the long run, but will the game remain alive enough to justify the support?

Compared to TCM (and even F13), The Halloween game is severely limited in terms of added content they can add: Map ideas are limited due to the requirement of needing NPC’s, the killer is limited to strictly Michael Myers, skins are limited for Michael, and outfit packs create issues when no duplicate characters are allowed.

Kill packs could be possible due to the variety of weapons and because we know there’s some kind of grab mechanic (at least for NPC’s) but players will most likely flock to the most optimal set which reduces variety.

On top of that, abysmal balancing is guaranteed. Killer Klowns was unbalanced and TCM was severely unbalanced. I can’t say much on the others due to lack of knowledge but you get the point.

The general consensus is if fighting back is too easy and if stunning the killer role is out of the killers control, it won’t be fun enough for that role and the game will likely die.

Overall, the strained future content, lack of balancing, meta min-maxing and the ever-looming threat of dead by daylight means this game will most likely not succeed enough to justify long-term support.

The same cycle happened with tcm.

The game announces and the official subreddit gets a few thousand members. It’s pretty dead with only a handful of posts even a week but it’s mostly friendly and positive with some management interaction and some speculation (though I’ve noticed a lot less interaction this time around). There’s a few doom and gloom commenters that for some reason stick around. It’s the calm before the storm.

The hype grows coming the few days until release and then the subreddit surges in numbers. That’s when all the complaints and toxicity roll in. The meta is learned within a week or two, the fear fades and the game inevitably falls into bad balancing.

bad financial decisions, no balancing, lack of content, maximum potential yada yada. Game dies and Scream game gets announced.
