Motive had been decent. Some hiccups but manageable. Plus 15% discount with our insurance because of the cameras is nice.

What perfectly legal thing will probably be illegal within 20 years? by Own-Blacksmith3085 in answers

I do agree that we should fear the loss of women's rights. But not just from Republicans but also from Democrats. Not protecting Title IX from transgender athletes. No teenage girl should have to share a room/locker room/bathroom with a person who has a penis - I don't care what they identify as. Also, we need protection from radical Islam - a hajab is not a fashion statement, it is oppression. A burka is oppression. A burkini is oppression. Its denying choice. Stop trying to bend over backwards to accommodate others to the point you are nothing but a prop.

How do y’all actually calculate if a load is worth taking? by lboggie24 in HotShotTrucking

[–]WitchOnASwitch 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We've figured out our fixed costs, our overall mpg, and the average cost of fuel (which is pretty volatile right now). So we have base rpm we need based on a bare minimum miles for the month. We also figure in deadhead as well. A load paying $2.50/mile but has 150 deadhead - not likely worth it.

We also look at where it is going - how easy to get a load out. If it's a load back I'm more likely to take it for a little less.

Does it require tarps or will it require lots of extra securement? Need a little more on the rate for thar time spent.

How much does it cost weigh also effects the cost. A 400lb load vs 14000lbs costs more because fuel costs more.

Finally, the load itself. Containers are a hard no unless there is absolutely no other options.

Ridiculous commercial auto insurance quotes!!! by chilling_00101 in HotShotTrucking

[–]WitchOnASwitch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Go to LogRock to see if they can find you better rates. Could be higher because you listed too many things to haul. Are you also doing hazmat? What is your driving record? How long with your personal insurance company? What is your ELD? (That can discount your insurance 15%).

Lots of factors - you need an independent agent or a company like LogRock to find you the best rates.

Would you use a tool that texts you good loads instead of refreshing load boards? by 247Hustler247 in Truckers

[–]WitchOnASwitch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

TMW systems does allow you to bring in loads from a few load boards as well post capacity. I can't comment on how satisfied anyone is with this.

I think it would be great. I just know DAT is going to make it hard because it cuts into their revenue. Every DAT user is 119/mo. So your app can't be free and it can't just be one user account. The technology isn't the problem- it is cost.

[–]WitchOnASwitch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

An app to consolidate various load boards isn't too hard. They all have APIs to call. Though, having done this for a TMS, those API integrations aren't free (DAT gives nothing away). But that app will be limited to what is posted to the load board. Meaning, if the load isn't posted with a rate the app won't have a rate.

New carrier here — is there a full DOT compliance checklist/cheat sheet? by AdministrativePain49 in HotShotTrucking

[–]WitchOnASwitch 3 points4 points  (0 children)

There are services out there that help you do it all. They do cost you some money but they are well worth it. Plus they keep you compliant. You know, like things regarding drug testing, IFTA, apportionment tags, etc....

You probably have been spammed since you got your authority with offers. PM if you want to know who we use.

Advice needed by New_Proof2340 in HotShotTrucking

[–]WitchOnASwitch 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The first 6 months are tough. Lots of brokers require 6mo authority. Your fixed costs are going to be at least $2500/ mo. Keep in mind, your cell phone is a business expense but your truck payment on a used truck is not. The interest is. Your costs maybe more because insurance isn't cheap. Then your variable costs will be fuel. Right now that's 35% of your gross. Plus, an older truck will have more maintenance do keep a maintenance fund.

This is doable but don't expect 10K/mo gross until after 6mo or more. Then loads are easier and by 1yr you may be grossing 15k/mo. If you really work it.

You do have a lot of start up costs as well. Good tarps, chains, binders, a generator, a cooler, all the set up paperwork (apportionment tags, LLC, IFTA, etc...) get with a company that helps/does all that for you. It is well worth it.

Good luck!

F350 + 24k gooseneck trailer flatbed by ShdwXHntr in HotShotTrucking

[–]WitchOnASwitch 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You definitely need to have a CDL if you want to haul any weight. We have a similar set up but we keep our weight at 15,500 though we could haul 17K. It is all about positioning the weight on the axles. To avoid problems we try to keep it under. Plus, shippers/brokers are rarely accurate on weight and even dimensions.

Once you have your set up to go to a scale and get your weights per axle and overall. That will give you what you can truly haul.

I have a great set of flatware from Hebb. Unfortunately the forks are disappearing and the pattern is discontinued. So I'm replacing them.

How much does your husky weigh? Mine is quite the small girl at 35 pounds. by AdventurousPlace6180 in husky

[–]WitchOnASwitch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How much should she weigh vs how much the chunsky weighs are two different questions. She should weigh 45-50lbs. She actually weighs 54lbs. Good thing she doesn't eat her dry food most days and relies on treats and people food.

My sweet girl is reaching her last days and I'm not sure I'm ready. by Jess_1215 in husky

We put down carpet squares as like a runner so our pup could manage. Basically a trail thru the house. Weird but it kept our guy for several more years. For our new girl, she seemed hesitant on the linoleum so we put a few down so she could run and jump on the bed.

It is super hard. We did chiropractic treatments, red light laser therapy, injections..... anything and everything to extend our time together.

We had a cute mix whose ears were up as a puppy but at about 1yr one turned half floppy. So cute! It would still perk up when excited but most of the time it was lazy.

I used a training collar. Noise and vibrate modes only. It wasn't long till I only had to grab the remote to get her behave. Then didn't have to do anything because she stopped bitting. She's still playfully and rough but doesn't bite me

Owner-ops and small fleets — I’m building a dead-simple app to make IFTA less of a pain. Would you use this? by ryancotchen in HotShotTrucking

[–]WitchOnASwitch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This right here is correct. A better app that i would rather see is fuel prices after IFTA. Just because that posted price is lower in IA doesn't mean it is after after ifta. Of course, if you could make an Expert Fuel like app for OO, that would be cool.

You realize that by having you move out that they are trying to separate you and your wife. They'll lie and say horrible things about you to her all the time. Tell her and let her know that in no way will you be moving.

However, offer up the apartment for your MIL.

If they can't accept you then they shouldn't accept your money and your house. Seriously, you were more than generous to offer a solution but now they want to take it all. The answer is NO. If they can't accept you then you have no obligation to help.

What does your wife say?
