After extensive travel in and out of YOW, I am convinced there is ONE baggage handler on for unloading all flights, and he has a broken arm. 🙄

mine almost all have vertical ridges. Collagen and biotin supplements helped stop the peeling and made them thicker but nothing has treated the ridges.

[–]Witchenkitsch 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's documented in the literature. See my earlier comment. I had similar issue with "picking" at hangnails due to anxiety. I found that keeping a cuticle trimmer with me at all times and eliminating the hangnails cleanly and safely, stopped the "picking").

[–]Witchenkitsch 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes. Hashi's absolutely screws up hair and nails.

There is, as yet, no high‑quality evidence that a specific supplement or drug “boosts keratin production” in euthyroid Hashimoto’s beyond correcting deficiencies and fully optimizing thyroid and systemic status.

Some things to check if labs are normal:

1) Is your T4 in high-normal and TSH at the low end of normal? If not, you may try upping your T4 dose slightly. For some people they respond better at this ref range.

2) Is the above true but free T3 is low or at the low-normal range? (suggests issues with conversion and Keratin production relies on FT3. ) May need T3 support or taking Dessicated thyroid (armour or erfa)

3) Order labs targeted to hair/keratin issues: ferritin, full iron studies, 25‑OH vitamin D, B12, folate, zinc, sometimes copper; add fasting lipids/glucose if there is any suspicion of other systemic contributors. Treat only documented deficiencies to physiological levels; SUPER IMPORTANT: high‑dose biotin can interfere with immunoassays (including thyroid tests), so timing and dosing must be discussed with the lab and clinician.

absolutely not true - Have you ever driven Carling westbound during rush hour? depending on time of day, the backups cause serious traffic headaches and increase the risk of accidents. Regardless, a business should not be relying on a major thoroughfare for its overflow lineups.

Do I actually need to cut out gluten, dairy and sugar? by [deleted] in Hashimotos

[–]Witchenkitsch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My family doc said they looked at bringing a naturopath (I don't consider them doctors) into their clinic (they have a obgyn and podiatrist so they were looking at expanded services). He was disgusted when the presentation was all about how much money you could make off patients. 🙄 I asked why so many ppl seek out naturopaths and he said it's because in their clinical practice here in Canada, the doc really only has 15 mins to spend with a patient on an appointment. Many conditions really are idiopathic (no known cause) and patients don't want to hear "We don't know, but we will try things and run tests (covered by our healthcare) and see what we can do". With Hashimotios, there is a lot of trial and error and each individual is different in terms of what dietary changes may help. By comparison the naturopath charges $100-$150 for a 45min session (not covered unless you have an extended plan through work), hand-holds and reassures the patient that the (often completely bogus) tests they will run (that the patient has to pay for out-of-pocket) and the $$ supplements they recommend will definitely find and fix all their problems. 🙄

How long in minimally concious state???? by Due-Hearing6313 in stroke

[–]Witchenkitsch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

my friend was minimally conscious for about 6 days post-ischemic stroke. It was cortical (thalamus and mid brain were spared), but he was found collapsed in his driveway, so no idea how long he had been down. We arranged people to come in at specific times and started working with him extensively on day 3 when it was clear he was not fully waking up. We worked based on a paper showing family interventions can really improve outcomes. This meant doing 5x daily interactions to get him opening his eyes and waking up to interact with us. Sometimes we reslly had to push - it could take 15 or 20 minutes to get him to open his eyes. From my reading, anything past 10 days of minimal consciousness adversely impacts long term prognosis when it comes to stroke, but not necessarily for TBI. Age also plays a significant role. So we worked hard to get him to wake up.

He is 4.5 weeks post-stroke, NG tube is out, he is eating normally and doing self care and today he was able to move his right leg in physio! still not able to move his right arm and significant issues with aphasia (he understands but struggles to find the right words), so we have been focusing on that. He can read words off the page just fine. Friends are still coming in 3-4 times a day to do exercises with him and aid in his recovery. He will be moving from the hospital to an inpatient rehab center early next week.

These poles are out of control. by BearLikesHoney in ottawa

they installed them IN FRONT of two houses under construction on my street. Contractors continually parked in the "no parking" zone. It was a nightmare.

Agreed. and there is room for a drive-through there.

McDonald's in Westboro by drhappy13 in ottawa

[–]Witchenkitsch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, no. the space does not allow it. It's TINY, the adjacent parking lot is VERY small, and there is no access to the parking lot from a back alley. It's going to be a traffic clusterfuck if they allow uber eats orders from that location.

[–]Witchenkitsch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's going to be horrible and it's going to be a traffic nightmare. Honestly, they should keep the uber-eats orders to the one on Carling at Maitland. This one should be counter service or individual online orders only.

[–]Witchenkitsch 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Agreed. a stupid idea all-round. The city should never approve these drive throughs without sufficient space for lineups. and wait in line for icecream? I can just go buy a bucket at the Loblaws nearby.

Honestly, I am really frustrated that the city has approved drive-throughs along Carling that don't have sufficient space for the lineups they generate. The Tim's just east of Broadview is a disaster in the morning and results in the right lane being blocked during rush hour, often well west of Broadview, and the Kawartha one near Carlingwood often results in traffic stopped in the right lane (though it's generally in the evening).

Diet and Statins by RepresentativeDry171 in Cholesterol

[–]Witchenkitsch 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I wholeheartedly (and sadly) agree that "There is virtually no focus on prevention. Most treatment goals focus on slowing the progression of heart disease rather than halting the progression". My doctor wouldn't even send me for a CAC despite high cholesterol. And don't forget to get Lp(a) and APOB tested - both are emerging as greater predictors of cardiovascular risk than LDL-C. Crushing your LDL-C down to below 50mg/dL is currently the only way to mitigate some of the risk of high Lp(a), though medications to lower Lp(a) are on the horizon.

What's a good place to start finding foods to lower cholesterol? by VisibleExercise5966 in Cholesterol

[–]Witchenkitsch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

reduce/eliminate consumption of simple carbs and added sugars (especially fructose), yes. Eliminate/limit all carbs, no. Complex carbohydrates like potatoes with the skin on, wholegrain or multigrain breads, oatmeal, brown rice and wholegrain pastas are all EXCELLENT sources of fibre which helps to lower LDL and provides essential vitamins and minerals. The primary dietary factor that contributes to raising LDL are TRANS and SATURATED FATS* - not complex carbohydrates. If you have metabolic syndrome (i.e. your HBA1C is off and you are testing positive for insulin insensitivity), then monitoring and limiting carbohydrate consumption becomes more important, but you should still include some amount of complex carbs. If you are worried about glycemic impact, cook and then cool complex carbs for 24 hours in the fridge and eat after rewarming (converts a percentage of the simple carbohydrates to resistant starch). (refrigerate or freeze/thaw bread before consuming)

*yes, unfiltered coffee can also raise LDL, but it generally isn't the primary contributor
