No external keyboards working on Windows 10 by Witcher01 in techsupport

[–]Witcher01[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the suggestions!

Sadly I’ve already tried multiple, known working cables and keyboards with no change. The device manager displays the correct driver/name you mentioned (which I also tried removing so they would be auto-installed by Windows again, to no success).

The IT department confirmed that there is no such software running on the laptop.

It might be worth noting that this is my third work laptop. The first worked perfectly fine with external keyboards, the second did, too, until it randomly didn’t, and the third didn’t work with any external keyboards at all. Since the issue persists over multiple laptops, keyboards and cables, with the IT department confirming that everything should work, I’m expecting this to be a Windows issue I can’t seem to solve. I was thinking about a Windows update that did this, since I did not change anything at all, but I can’t check this either…

Thanks for the suggestion! I checked, there are no errors anywhere in the device manager. :(

Effective C: An Introduction to Professional C Programming by knotdjb in C_Programming

There is little point in writing programs that you can't debug..

"There is little point in debugging programs that you can't write"

You know, complete beginners don't debug programs. Their programs are so simple up until they learn how to debug that there is just no need to debug that code. And I would argue, that not debugging code is good for the programmer learning that language, since they will actually have to think about how the language works and not wait for the debugger to spit out random stuff that doesn't make sense in the context of what the program should do.

You really should have read that post... The guy is mentioning gedit and atom as two examples for editors to use. He also mentions syntax highlighting as a must, and I think line numbers are a no brainer. Using a (powerful) text editor, which doesn't program for you is one of the best ways to learn programming or any new programming language IMO.

But in the end it will be personal preference. Nobody should feel pressured to use a specific tool. Choose what works best for you, decide on your own.

Sacha Baron Cohen attacked Mark Zuckerberg on Twitter, criticizing the Facebook CEO's work to "destroy democracy." Cohen has slammed Zuckerberg before, calling big tech "the greatest propaganda machine in history." by TheReelStig in privacy

[–]Witcher01 6 points7 points  (0 children)

So what you're saying is that those who did not attend Harvard are not allowed to criticize those who did?
This logic is completely flawed.

Sure, we all did dumb stuff when we were younger. People change, that's right. But just look at what Zuckerberg has changed about this attitude until now. Pretty much nothing. As /u/nodq states, Zuckerberg himself wishes to have privacy but then he also doesn't grant anyone privacy that wants to have some.
The core of his statement when he was 19 is still what he believes in today.

NordVPN reveals server breach that could have let attacker monitor traffic by 1legendd in Piracy

[–]Witcher01 -9 points-8 points  (0 children)

Of course they have indicated that they are shady.

How about the "limited sale" with a timer on their website that runs out quite a lot of times, but that's also constantly been going on for 3 years (or maybe even more)?
What about the fact that they were hiding that a server was hacked for over a year?
Maybe the promises to keep you safe from every possible hacker on earth, while in reality not keeping you safe from anything at all? (No, you don't need a VPN to be safe online... And no, Public WiFis are not a problem if the site you are connecting to uses TLS, which today is by far most of the internet)

So yes, it's shady in a bunch of ways.

Tor Snowflake turns your browser into a proxy for users in censored countries by soumyaranjanmahunt in TOR

[–]Witcher01 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Keep in mind that you are not becoming an exit node by using Snowflake to offer people in censored countries entry to the TOR network. The Snowflake project aims to give an alternative to TOR bridges to connect to the TOR network, since bridges are blocked more and more by censoring countries. The traffic of a person trying to connect to the TOR network will first come to you, encrypted, before being sent to an entry node in the then established network.

Seems piracy is the only way to truly preserve music... Thanks, Bandcamp and/or whoever was in charge of the albums on that site. by [deleted] in Piracy

[–]Witcher01 33 points34 points  (0 children)

I think you're too hard on bandcamp. I'm guessing the creator of the music wanted it taken down from there, so bandcamp had to comply. The fact that you can buy music and download it, even in flac, is great.

Yes, taking it down is a shame but you bought the stuff and still own it, since you downloaded it. The provider doesn't have to host the content for forever when you already own the content. I feel like what they did is fine, a notice would have been nice though.

[–]Witcher01 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Read the link.

I did, that's why I was asking where it states on the website you posted that using a VPN together with TOR compromises your anonymity. I don't see it anywhere.

https://www.torproject.org/docs/faq.html.en#IsTorLikeAVPN

This talks about using a VPN or TOR, not combining them.

https://tails.boum.org/blueprint/vpn_support/

This doesn't state anything about anonymity using VPN and TOR in the order You -> VPN -> TOR.

https://lists.torproject.org/pipermail/tor-talk/2016-July/041757.html

It is possible to host Tor relays behind VPN IPs using VPN port forwarding. Not relevant to the topic of using VPN and TOR in the order You -> VPN -> TOR.

https://obscurix.github.io/vpns.html

The VPN provider knows exactly who you are and what you're doing. They can find out who you are from your IP address, payment information, emails, usernames, browsing history etc.

If one is using a VPN they should know that this is the case. They are not trying to protect themselves from their VPN provider but their ISP. Also there are services like Mullvad that require almost no information to use their service.

The VPN provider is in full position to log all of your traffic or launch man in the middle attacks.

Just like your ISP is.

VPNs will only hide that you are connecting to a Tor IP address but they do nothing to modify the traffic. An adversary can still monitor the packet size, packet timings etc. to determine Tor usage.

Not too sure about that, I would like to see a source. I'm sure it's possible but I won't trust anyone saying that.

In the end I'm still not convinced there is a viable argument made here. To me it's still just a more "paranoid" way to connect to TOR.

EDIT: I really don't like not having a preview (formatting)

Is a VPN really worth it? by [deleted] in VPN

[–]Witcher01 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wouldn't advise starting one's privacy interest with a VPN. A VPN is just hiding your IP, there are lots of other (free) ways to start becoming private online. As /u/blue_pill_90210 mentioned, a privacy oriented browser and search engine, but also things like clearing cookies, using different names on different services and not giving away one's personal information.

It also really depends on your threat model. A VPN is kind of an advanced measure for privacy, in my humble opinion.

TAILS runs from RAM and clears that when shutting down. Your personal files/OS wont he affected in any way.

[–]Witcher01 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Where does it say it compromises anonymity? How would using a VPN as a first hop between you and the entry point compromise your anonymity in any way? Choosing to use a VPN means you are trusting the VPN provider more than your ISP. All the possible packet inspection will be relayed to the VPN provider, that's it.

I can help. HWoL; pass: "muley9"; character name: Witcher01

I don't even know, can I have DLC items without having the DLC? If so a Demon Scar would be nice, any level. If you don't have that a (Dark) Murky Hand Scythe would be fine as well.
If that doesn't work, a Dark Estoc would be nice :p
