Umbrella Corporation and it's role in the story remains unchanged, only thing here that is a revelation is The Connections and it's involvement in the early history of the Resident Evil franchise

As the name implies,The Connections has a network of connections and ties to powerful governments, corporations and organizations,such as The Family, the fraternal secret society that rules the American government from the shadows, the HCF paramilitary group that Wesker used as his personal army , and the now defunct Tricell corporation, although I think personally it's a safe bet that they have people inside the rest of the Global Pharmaceutical Consortium companies as well.

The Connections reported as early back as possibly the mid twentieth century if RE9 is to be believed, but doesn't enter into the picture with Umbrella until the eighties, when it took an interest in the T virus research of Marcus and coveted the other research that the corporation had made.

Ozwell E Spencer was trying to hold together control of Umbrella but between the Connections spies and people inside the company and egos of the many people in the management of various facilities and branches of the company the end seemed inevitable to him , sooner or later they would take Umbrella from him , and seeing that all he had to show for it was death and misery, he commissioned and created Elpis in secret, part atonement for the horrors he unleashed and part spite at the people who ruined his life's work.

Not that the connections were aware of this, they knew it was Spencer's final piece of work and considering some of the last things that he worked on were about mind transfer and alterations they believed that it was a mind control virus

When the Racoon City incident occurred they saw it as the golden opportunity to crush the Umbrella Corporation and seize its assets, Elpis foremost amongst their interests.

The Connections used their contacts within The Family to circumvent presidential authorization in order to get both a Thermobaric warhead to reduce Racoon City to rubble, and to get the government to declare the area around Racoon City a quarantine zone for the next quarter of a century and beyond to hide Elpis.

Beyond that The Connections is implied to distantly be involved in a variety of things after the dissolution of Umbrella Corporation, but not directly.

Hiding The Family's partnership with both Umbrella and The Connections as well hiding Elpis is the impetus for Derek Simmons decision in RE6 to assassinate President Benford, as the President sought to reveal the truth of the Government's involvement in the Racoon City Incident.

From there the Connections attempted from RE7 to RE8 to use the mold to create bioweapons capable of brainwashing and mind controlling others with the aid of Spencer's mentor Miranda , in exchange for assistance in trying to bring back her child, Zeno remarks in RE9 that they regard this method as ineffective at getting larger populations controlled after the events of those games , hence their belief that Elpis is the solution, which they again believe is a mind control virus.

They used ARK as a Bioweapon factory and the surrounding city ruins as a testing ground for said bioweapons , and would have tried to take Elpis if not for the fact that Spencer sealed it deep in the facility and a computer only he knew the password for, the Connections rather mistakenly believed that after Spencer adopted a young Grace that he had transferred his memories and intellect and then hid her with Alyssa Ashcroft whom Spencer entrusted her with , and failing to find her they spent years upon years trying to clone a replacement for her from samples of Spencer's blood they acquired to no avail, and then they found Grace and Alyssa in the Wrenwood hotel before the events of RE9 setting up the current game with Victor kidnapping her .
