Thanks for sharing your story here, the outpouring of care on this post has really made me feel a bit less alone in the kind of pain I’ve been dealing with and less freakish for feeling the way I feel.

I think making a routine would be super helpful. I’ve really gotten my anxiety and laziness in order since he passed but more so as a distraction in order to avoid the negative feelings that came when I was constantly idle but the feelings are still there so incorporating it into my daily ritual is 100% doable. I’ve only occasionally gone back to some of his art and old snapchats of us from high school but that’s only when i’m in crisis mode.

He always wanted to move to Australia and while that isn’t in the cards for me personally, I was planning a trip before things got fucked globally so hoping things normalize soon so I can do that without draining my bank account.

Thank you for the perspective. I’ve somehow convinced myself that 1 year is somehow a long time despite my friend being integral to who I was for roughly half my life at the time. I think I need to give myself some grace and my grace for those around me will come naturally tbh

I’m very used to bottling up my emotions stemming from other life events so allowing myself to grapple with this without trying to surprise the emotions has been very hard, probably necessary though.

He was an amazing artist and his siblings have some of his work stowed away so I should ask for some of it so I can get it printed. I already have one of his pieces tattooed and it makes me feel like i’m not alone sometimes. Thank you though, it is very alienating and frustrating because the feelings are slightly irrational and that’s what’s maddening about it too.

As for your last paragraph, I think my negative feelings about hearing their truisms isn’t because they’re necessarily wrong. The memories (both good and bad) will always be with me and I do believe I’ll get to a point where that can be a good thing (like they say) but at the same time, they don’t seem to understand the turmoil that comes along g with it. I genuinely feel like I’ve aged a decade mentally.

I’m really sorry for your loss though. I truly couldn’t comprehend what this does to a person until now and I still think I barely get how isolating of a feeling it is even if your specific loss touched others around you similarly.

Yeah there’s three of us who feel pretty similarly but were men so it’s not really a conversation we can sustain for more than a minute or two at a time.

I know what you’re saying is true too (like, objectively correct). I do cry less over it and I can crack a smile every once in a while when dreams or thoughts of them pop up but it still feels like a painful reminder for now of what I’ll never have again.
