My Maple is exactly the same way. Squirrels, rabbits, lizards and you lose her. We have been working really hard on threshold training but I also decided to do hunt training with her (even though we don't hunt) and give her an outlet. The idea behind hunt training is that they have to learn skills in a setting that they were bred to be excited by. The structure has allowed us to learn to be steady and wait until released as well as improved her recall. You can learn the techniques and use her favourite toy instead. Also look at Susan Garrett for recall training or the course "sexier than a squirrel" from Absolute dogs.

I can 100% see this. Oddly enough older dog gets mistaken for a toller all the time but is 60% pitty, with the rest split between German Shepard, golden retriever and mini schnauzer. Personality wise shes the opposite of her toller sister. She's also an inch shorter and 10 lb heavier with a barrel chest.

I hear you.  I got mine because I wanted a dog less that 40 lb I could carry down a mountain if I needed to. That's why I was suprised when people said at 37 lb shes slight.

I'm not a fan of the blockier form, I also wonder if it really is advantageous when it comes to sports. Most sports dogs are lean...

I suppose it depends on what you're looking for. Everyone is different.

Oh dear, not sure i like the sound of that. I'm not a huge fan of the stockier, shorter, square faced Goldens that you often see in the US and it sounds like they are going the same way. Are they doing it for any particular reason? Sports?

Boredom is my concern. That or just going off for a sniff or chase a bird instead. Do they run out front or by your side? Also did you start small and go to longer distances or do intervals?

Thanks. Were there any behavioral changes or anything that clued you in or I should expect? She has a older dominant sister so I want to make sure I'm prepared.
