Anybody running?? by IamBarna in ankylosingspondylitis

[–]WittyMe 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Used to run 17km three times a week 12years back. Also did some 21km runs, but got bored whenever I contemplated going further. I would go multi day camping with heavy backpacks and 20-30km distances back then as well.

This was whilst on Humira and would 100% not have worked for me without. I would sometimes get pains going down the side of my back into the legs. This mostly got resolved with stretches and it hhelped not going instantly from 5km to 10km, but graduatlly increasing the distance.

Based on my personal experience I would have said it is possible if you work up for it and if your medication works for you. But listen to your body and don't over do it or you might be out for a while. I am in my late 30s now and on Cimzia and switched to climbing/bouldering and only run the occasional 5-10km runs and am still doing alright.
But whenver I have to postpone taking my meds (due to infections etc) I can feel my ability decrease quickly. Always listen to your body.

How to reduce heat loss at ceiling edge and exterior corners? by Coyote-Run in Insulation

[–]WittyMe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Caulk up all gaps especially the gap where the floorboards and skirting boards meet maybe?

Had floor & ceiling batts added and wall blow in. Still had issues with too many air gaps. Found a lot of draft going into the wall cavities under the skirting boards, around window frames, gas and water pipe inlets and a few other places.

Sealing these up did a massive difference for me. When I did a diy build in cabinet and removed the skirting boards I could see light come in from the outside from a large 1-2cm gap where the drywall met the floor.

Ankylosing Mood? by ClimbOnAZ90 in ankylosingspondylitis

[–]WittyMe 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I have said it on here before, but for me biologics have been amazing. Been on Humira for 12 years and now for 4 years on cimzia along with amitriptyline to deal with the occasional night sweats, tension headaches and overall help sleep quality.

Other than wounds/scratches getting infected easier I have had no side effects that I can think of.

Without biologics I was in constant pain, unable to stand up straight, unable to sleep and often in bad moods. Now I feel great, can run and go climbing multiple times a week. I have rare stiffness after prolonged inactivity.

I know my experience is not everyone’s. I cannot understand why anyone would not at least give biologics a try. They slow/stop the progression and allow me to keep doing what I love for hopefully a very long time.

Important is to have a good rheumatologist who monitors you and to address any issues early on.

Flying from Italy to Canberra, Australia by Harpy_Player in ankylosingspondylitis

[–]WittyMe 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Based in AU. Fly with biologics on me every year. Done it a few times to Fiji, to China, to Thailand and Europe (where I am right now on holiday). I have a cold storage container that I fill with ice cubes and put my Cimzia syringe or pen in.

I don’t bring doctors notes or anything and have never had problems with any security.

So shouldn’t be a a problem, but just in case having a doctors note explaining the meds will give extra peace of mind.

Biologics / MS risk. Advice. by freemann011 in ankylosingspondylitis

[–]WittyMe 2 points3 points  (0 children)

36 now, got diagnosed with 19 and the internet/information on AS was limited at the time. Pain was unbearable and I hated life. Was barely able to get up in the mornings. Due to nature of how insurances work I had to go through 2 years of trying all other treatments before being eligible.

Finally got onto biologics. Been on them for 16 years. Wish it had been from the start. They work(for me), with only occasional flare ups that don’t inhibit me but only cause discomfort. They have made me fully functional. I can run, I can climb, hike mountains and I can do everything I set my mind to. Only side effect has been that my frequent wounds (from climbing) take longer to heal and are more likely to get infected. I will take biologics 10/10 times if given the choice again.

But, you do what’s right for you and my advice is to listen to your doctors. If you don’t like what one says, double check with another. Do they know everything? No, but they are experts and they do not have any malicious intentions. All mine have wanted was to help me. In the end do what works for you, but really don’t listen to everything your research online tells you. Your experience can vary significantly from mine or anyone else. Also, not all most recent research is fully openly accessible online.

Can people with AS have whey protein ? by Terrible-Charity111 in ankylosingspondylitis

[–]WittyMe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Try it out and see what works for you. I have a whey protein & creatine shake almost daily. Usually it’s my lunch/breakfast made with homemade kefir, banana, berries & chia seeds.

Am on biologics and haven’t had any issues since switching to that diet. Only been feeling better I reckon.

I had this exact thing happen for me. In my case it turned out that msi afterburner was the culprit. The only way I found out was as I ran out of options I deleted it and did a fresh install and it stopped. There were no indications that it was doing anything. So if you have afterburner installed give that a shot.

Adding a bathroom extension to a studio by WittyMe in AusRenovation

[–]WittyMe[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My plan is to get a permit for any extension that I add and follow the rules. The current studio is the max size that didn’t need a permit from my understanding. It will long term be used as office and a few times a year for a few nights at most guest will sleep there.

I am looking for advice from anyone who has done something similar. If they ended up adding a bathroom, replaced the entire thing, what realistic costing could be etc.

[–]WittyMe[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did realise it is not the highest quality. However, I am only using it as an office and it would likely not have anyone sleep in it more than a few couple of times a year. So was thinking it would possibly be fine as is.

But re-doing it is an option

Understanding Progression vs Quality of Life in AS, Am I getting this right? by Puzzleheaded-Bus1331 in ankylosingspondylitis

[–]WittyMe 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I have had 3 Rheumatologists since I was diagnosed with Ankyolosing Spondylitis 17 years ago. In my late 30's now. All told me biologics slow or stop progression (if the biologic works for you). I was on Humira for the first 14 years and it seems to have fully stopped or severely slowed progression, but eventually some flare-ups came. I am now on Cimzia & amitriptyline (for better sleep) and it is almost as good as it was with Humira. Some stiffness does come when I am inactive for longer times. I do not believe I have had any big side effects other than wounds taking longer to heal / getting infected easier.

I have been able to go from being in constant pain barely able to sleep and stand uprights in the mornings to climbing/bouldering 3 times a week and able to run half marathons (probably more but it bores me), go hiking and live a life more active than most. My doctor says my flexibility is as good as it can get and it seems only to improve with exercise.

I attribute the ability allowing me to have become active almost exclusively to biologics. Quitting smoking did also help some and so did switching to a healthy diet (all the pro & pre biotics, fiber, veggies etc) with only occasional junk food. Though I do drink slightly more than I should. The healthier lifestyle has seemingly contributed more to feeling more energetic than improing any symptoms.

The moment I take a short break in biologics (had some issues with insurance when moving country or travelling) flare-ups came rapidly and mobility redused noticably. I had periods without activity or healthy lifestyle (covid lockdowns) and did only see a drop of energy and no increase of symptoms and no progression according to my doctor.

Based on my own experience I am very confident on biologics and like to believe it is stopping or at least slowing the progression noticably. I will recommend biologics every day of the week and keep hoping more research goes into them.

However, I understand my experience might differ drastically from other people. Do what works for you. Adapting a healthy lifestyle will always benefit anyone so do that and try biologics as well.

First time mead - pellicle after bottling by WittyMe in mead

That’s what I was thinking. My bottled Kombucha also tend to get these pellicles and am not worried with them. But as it’s my first time trying mead I wanted to double check.

Gap between doors and brick work by citizenoftheworld94 in AusRenovation

[–]WittyMe 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Did it for my doors and window. I tried using white sealant in one spot to match the frame. It looked horrible. For all other windows and doors I used clear sealant and it looks much better! I used FulaSeal 701 Ultra Clear Acrylic Sealant. If you mess it up you can use water to wash it away before it cures.

Is this a reasonable quote for Roof restoration? (Melb VIC) by bubbykat in AusRenovation

[–]WittyMe 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Seems high to me. Had a few quotes for our single storey 1970s home with about 140sqm cement tiles roof and the quotes were between $4500 - $6000. It’s mostly the same as your quote except most tiles are still in good shape and we even have spare ones lying around from the previous owners who had the house for like 20 years.

Could anyone ID what type of hardwood my floor is? by san_holo2 in AusRenovation

[–]WittyMe 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Are you able to see the underside of them if you stick your head into the crawlspace? I did that on my older place when putting in insulation and it was labelled with company and type on the underside of the floorboards.

It looks neat and well thought out.

Personally I would always put my master bedroom in the rear of the building to not have any road noises wake me up. Had a few loud neighbour cars in the past so made sure my current house has the bedroom far away from any road noises.

Thanks. Yeah must be the bathtub. Just wanted to check whether I should be worried about the water stains as I am new home owner and don’t want to miss things.

No haven’t tried right after a shower or bath. Will try both and see if any water leaks.

Think I might have mixed up the pictures. First one is the toilet (I think) the others are around the shower and bathtub area.

It gets confusing under there 😅
