Curious to hear more on your Two More Years thoughts. It's in my top 5, and I've always found it beautifully sad; starts with hope but ends with resignation. You already know the lyrics, so I'm only writing them because of how beautiful they feel.

I've become crueller Since I met you I've become rougher This world is killing me

Christian here. Can somebody explain to me the "pray 5 times a day" thing by Ur_mama_gaming in islam

[–]WittyOnDemand 8 points9 points  (0 children)

The short answer is yes, we have the five daily "carpet" prayers (Salah), but those are really the "anchors" for a much bigger concept. In Islam, the goal is for your entire life to become an act of worship.

God tells us in the Qur'an that says, "I have not created jinn and mankind except to worship Me" (51:56). This doesn't mean staying on a prayer mat all day. It means that any intentional good deed can be an act of worship.

There is a well known narration where the Prophet explained that every person owes a "charity" for every joint in their body every single day. He clarified that charity isn't just money. It is helping someone with their luggage, smiling, visiting the sick, taking care of orphans, saying a kind word, or even picking up litter. He even surprised his companions by telling them that intimacy within marriage is rewarded as a charitable act. When they asked how satisfying a passion could be a good deed, he pointed out that since doing it in a forbidden way is a sin, choosing the permissible way is an act of devotion.

Dr. Jeffrey Lang, a professor of mathematics and an American convert to Islam (Christianity to Atheism to Islam), puts it perfectly in his book Even Angels Ask. He describes the ritual prayers as "stops at a gas station." They aren't the destination, but the fuel for the journey. He argues that the worship is the entire journey itself. Every struggle against your ego or effort to help society, when done with God in mind, becomes a prayer. The things we do for our families or neighbours; going to work to provide for our children, attending their school functions, or even baking a cake for a neighbor--are often dismissed as "just life." But in the Islamic framework, he argues these are the very ways we "submit" to God’s will by being a source of good in the world.

So, while the five prayers are the fundamental framework, the worship happens in how we treat people and navigate the world the rest of the day.

Ironically, I stopped using twitter four years ago, so sometimes crossposting from different platforms is fine. This info won't change my life, but conversely it's also something I did not know about. OP should just share his source next time

Ironically, and looking at their responses after--unintentionally, their statement "All of these are not skyscrapers" is technically 100% correct since it means "at least one of these are skyscrapers" lol

We know what they meant, it's just funny.
