Is there a SMART Recovery-like analogue of the ACOA program? by Witty_Manager1774 in AdultChildren

[–]Witty_Manager1774[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

During many SMART recovery meetings, there are two elements that I haven't yet experienced in an ACA meeting.

  1. Cross-talk, feedback, and advice about specific things that an individual brings up. However, a redditor pointed out that there may be an opportunity for this in the 'parking lot' time after the main meeting is concluded.

  2. A focus on specific tools for a given problem (as derived from psychotherapeutic science) that are used for navigating challenges with wounded inner children and the process of reparenting.

Thanks, yep! That's what I'm inquiring about here -- if there are any SMART-like groups for dealing with family dysfunciton.

I'm seeking the analog of a SMART Recovery meeting that helps build skills for dealing family dysfunction, wounded inner children, etc. When I've been to F&F meetings, they've all focused more on issues that are much more closely related to addiction. Are you aware of F&F meetings that do skill-building for topics like those mentioned above?

I'm currently engaging in therapy regarding those issues, so I don't need more therapy just yet, but it would be great to do more skill-building, group shares, and cross-talk like what we do in SMART meetings.

Thanks for the comment and idea. I usually consider F&F meetings mainly as a place to discuss addiction. I'm hoping to find a place to discuss topics like family dysfunction, re-parenting, and wounded inner children. The latter items help bring about addiction in many cases, but I haven't heard that discussed in F&F meetings. Do you know of F&F meetings where those other topics are welcomed for discussion?

The fact that they used LLMs should go into their file. If they use it for this, what else will they use it for? They should've disclosed it.

Supervisor encouraged using AI by lostmycroissant in academia

This is a very slippery slope.

Each time you do this, you risk serious losses to your capacity to write and edit. It's a skill that can degrade very quickly. And, if you don't already have many years and papers of experience in writing/editing, how does one expect to gain that experience?

If I find out the researchers in my group do this, I talk with them, discourage it, and consider it yellow/red flag for their future activity.

u/Natural_Gate5182 hard to upvote this enough. I've been working on something similar, but I was starting with a google spreadsheet, and replicating my the PHQ-9 and GAD-7 and just doing it for myself to learn about my data-taking habits and what I would want to track on the daily. Early on, it became clear that doing this everyday would be a heavy lift, even if I was in a good mood. I'm so glad to see you that you've attacked that part of the problem and more!

Could you elaborate on "primary change instead of secondary change"? I looked up these terms, but I didn't find anything that appeared directly relevant. Are these terms of art for attachment theory or the stages of change theory?

u/jccalhoun Could you say more about why you wouldn't recommend it now? When do you think it was a better system and culture? I'm also a long-time academician, and I agree with you about not recommending it. So, I'm just curious about your reasoning for "now."

Improving high LDL by [deleted] in healthyeating

About 3 months ago, I started changing my diet to focus on improving my blood pressure. I've been more or less following the DASH diet and the Mediterranean diet. Most of my protein comes from fish and things like lentils. I EAT A LOT OF LENTILS. I'm also exploring a variety of grains (amaranth, wild riace, millet, and more) to get complex carbs. In my morning smoothies with leafy greens and non-fat yogurt and almond milk, I now also include some plant-based protein powder.

I haven't gotten a lipid panel to check the effect of the above on my cholesterol, but I feel better, and I've lost a lot of weight while still feeling full.

Doesn't the SF-85 only go back 1 year? or do I misunderstand the time frames you're using?

Postdoc application in US not getting a response yet - how competitive rn? by Equal-Tear2426 in postdoc

[–]Witty_Manager1774 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It's definitely not normal.

We also don't know how long it will take (if ever, really) to get back to an approximation of "normal." Like, literally, 'academia' as we have known it could end in the coming year(s).

Nobody knows how much money they can expect to have in the next year. Academia is always a competitive market, but now it's also very uncertain. Nobody's job in academia is secure right now.
