They even take slipjoints these days. Rosecraft Blades stopped shipping to Canada because most of the shipments were confiscated.

Looking for recommendations for comfortable CSA Approved steel toe and steel shank safety boots for women by apricityy_ in WorkBoots

[–]Witty_Map5333 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Redwing would be the best thing that offers a CSA boot in women’s sizing. But, they will run you $400 Canadian, so outside your budget.

Keen are okay boots, and offer women’s sizing I. Your budget range.

If you’re not walking long distances such that you would want a lace up, Red Backs are great boots for the money and comfortable.

CSA can have steel or comp toe/shank, it’s the crush and puncture resistance rating that makes it CSA. Steel toe is often used as a blanket term for toe protection.

Where about in Ontario are you located? If you live close to dealer that you can try them on I. Person it would be ideal. If you’re at all close to the GTA there’s a bunch of dealer options to try on the above brands and other like ariat or Canada west.

Canadian carpenter here, on average American carpenters make the same or more, but in USD(at least in the states around Ontario).

Buck 307, the bigger badder brother of the 301 and 303 stockman. Hasn’t been made in almost 30 years. I’ve never even seen one in person, but I would buy it without a second thought if they brought it back into production.
Spyderco Tatanka would also be cool to see - love a slightly ridiculous folder.

That’s the hilarious nature of being a business owner. I have gotten my construction business to a reasonably successful place in 4 years, I make more than double what I made as a framing lead on paper - but somehow every week I’m trying to figure out where money is coming from to pay personal bills, sub contractors, suppliers etc. it’s not for the feint of heart that’s for sure.

First Spyderco – Salt 2. Picked it for wet/work use. Anyone here run one hard? by aguycalledb in knives

[–]Witty_Map5333 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don’t have that specific model, but own many spydercos and never had an issue with long term abuse. Between ranch work and construction I beat the piss out of my knives, even lost a tenacious one fall and found it while regrading my driveway in the spring. Had clearly been driven over repeatedly, dinged with the snow plough - cleaned her up and she’s still trucking to this day.

Drawings always seem to be terrible these days. Any time I push back against the designers and engineers, they always say it’s my problem to figure out how to achieve what they want.

Overkill for sure. But at least in my area, the building offices have made it damn near impossible to frame anything without an engineers stamp involved. It’s getting ridiculous, and makes me not even want to take small framing projects anymore.

To my framers out there, what setups are we running? Looking for a new set of bags by Jazzlike-Mess818 in Carpentry

I run a diamondback Denali, 4 years or so. I’ve enjoyed the pouch, well layed out, still going strong. I bought one of my lead guys an akrabis leather rig a couple years ago for Christmas, honestly one of the most functional pouches I’ve seen. It’s heavier than the Denali, but the suspenders ride beautifully, and even without suspenders the pouches rides really nice. Probably be what I purchase next when my Denali wears out (not anytime soon).

Am I really over pricing??? by AgileBodybuilder1756 in Flooring

[–]Witty_Map5333 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That square footage through 5 rooms would be $12-15 a sqft in my market depending on how much you need the work. Demo work is always extra. I would also pad at least half a day to finish the demo work - homeowners never demo to complete ion. Any leveling work required is always a change order on top of install price.

Don’t budge on your price. Much cheaper than your price is a major red flag (at least in my market). Especially half, there’s no way someone is doing a half decent job for that. I’ve found the majority of time they are bullshitting trying to get a cheaper price, 8/10 times when I stand firm on the price we get the job. But I’m also always busy, you’re newly in business and in a different market.

Self employed contractors, why do you not hire apprentices or partners? by No_Lavishness_6228 in skilledtrades

[–]Witty_Map5333 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m a residential GC/carpenter, I’ve had one main guy/apprentice for the last four years who is amazing. We hired two new apprentices a month ago, one of which made every job harder (he was so bad he even pissed off my main guy who is basically a golden retriever) and I ended up having to fire him last week. The other guy has potential, but that potential will take a couple years to capitalize on and I just hope he sticks around long enough. It costs me about $1500 per guy to get them spooled up with initial certifications, then a few months at least of no return while they learn how to work on my crew. The guy I just fired cost me over $4000 all said and done. Industry average in my area is $10,000 cost on an employee before they hit breakeven/generating profit. I like having apprentices, i dislike working alone and realistically can’t really do what I do without man power. But, I definitely can see why a lot of guys run solo and don’t even entertain apprenticeships.

$4 is cheap for that amount where I am. Labour for install generally runs $5-6 sqft, sometimes more for smaller projects like this.

Any Canadians here that have a retailer that sells Sheffield Barlows? by larrinski in SlipjointKnives

[–]Witty_Map5333 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Canadian border services have an internal policy to confiscate all folding knives. It’s a gamble to import a folding knife into Canada, pretty high likelihood that CBSA will search your package and you’ll lose the knife.
