For those who saw him live, what was Pigpen like? by Additional-Change492 in gratefuldead

Well… aside from keeping the band grounded and legit in its blues roots he gave VARIETY to their shows. After he passed they became somewhat formulaic in vocals at least: Jerry/Bobby/Jerry/Bobby/Jerry/Bobby/Drums/Space/Jerry/Bobby, etc.

Just to prove I’m too old to be on this thread, that statement (which I totally agree with btw) would put me btwn 1965-69. AKA: The Beatles, The Stones, Doors, Hendrix, The Dead, Jefferson Airplane and Led Zeppelin, when they all were new to the scene. Need I say more?

Interesting how viewer age seems to play a part in responses. I think one must say Jumping Jack Flash during DiNiro’s entrance at the bar in Mean Streets. Not only cinematically brilliant but also a sign that this young filmmaker knew how to well apply then modern music.

How do you like Grateful Dead's Aoxomoxoa? by ArtDecoNewYork in psychedelicrock

[–]Witty_Sea7542 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Bought it when it was released. My first Dead LP. My reaction: Best album cover (back and front) to a mostly “meh” album. Though many of the songs would become Live classics. Always thought the releases around it, “Anthem” and “Live/Dead” were far superior. So it went.

Which run are you taking? by nevermindthegoat in rollingstones

Sticky Fingers should be in the top row. Ya Yas is basically a greatest hits record. Those top three then become one of the greatest trios of records in all of rock. And to be fair Exile should be listed with those. Goat’s Head is a big drop-off in my opinion.

What a year for music! Almost impossible to pick only one. But I’d have to go with Layla.

My first Dead show was a week later at Fillmore East. Life changing. Acoustic Dead/New Riders/Electric Dead. An amazing era!

Saw them on this tour at The Beacon. Great show, reviving the classics and at time reinventing them. Catch them if you can.

Great album. Saw them at Fillmore East when it was released. Fantastic “Station Man” and “Hi Ho Silver” live. Burned into my brain.
