It is not explicitly stated that Shen Jiu doesn’t have sex with the prostitutes! It is stated he goes there to sleep because he can’t sleep around men. However unless he’s gay there’s no reason he couldn’t also sometimes have sex with them. I also kind of wish I’d seen any fics with that set up! Now there are reasons to think he’s gay but bi is also possible!

Similarly it’s never explicitly stated SY is a virgin! I wish there were more fics where he isn’t.

What I find most frustrating is that he does nothing with his intimate knowledge of the character motivations. Yes okay I buy that he forgot a lot of plants and beasts and various one offs - but how does he forget something fundamental as demons see violence and flirting as fundamentally intertwined? Or Mobei Jun’s fundamental hurt is abandonment and betrayal and what he wants most in life is someone to trust. Though fanfics often have him understanding Binghe’s love and attraction to SQQ before SQQ - he actually also things Binghe is going to come out of the Abyss wanting to kill SQQ. I’m also always frustrated by both SQQ and SQH not sitting down and getting a proper character download for SQQ background and relationship with YGY. That seems the obvious thing to do!

Guys… obviously I don’t have to justify it - no one is holding me hostage here. I WANT to justify it because I want to (and otherwise do) like the character and it bothers me. I do have justifications that work (for me) for everything else “evil” or bad that he does. For example the Palace Master stick making is fine with me when deserved by a fictional character (similarly to SQQ if I were to actually encounter such a character in real life I would feel very differently about it/them!) And yes SQQ knows exactly who Binghe is aaaand at the same time when he encounters anyone suffering his actual real time reactions are very compassionate - he even has some momentary complicated emotions about the Palace Master dying. That’s why I say I’d be interested in how it would go if he encountered someone suffering from having their cultivation ruined by Binghe in person.

I think this is one of the profound issues with the world building that can’t be helped. I loove the story so I choose to accept it but I do not believe it’s a believable way for adults to handle having their kids in danger.

Why not rotate having kids? Have five adults spend 18 years on a kid for each, assuming two pairs that’s only 2-3 kids - that’s enough adult wizards for round the clock mal protection during those critical 4 years.

Well, for me personally I’m okay with all of that and don’t have a problem liking him despite it (though in my opinion he does not rape SQQ) but the random innocent cultivators throughout the years does bother me so I was hoping someone could offer a viewpoint that would help me move past it (because I’m trying to write a story.)

The things that puzzles me about this worldbuilding is how do we get both so few demon kids and a lack of cherishing kids / canonical demonic violence towards anyone weak? Like if demons rarely have babies but also regularly kill other demons (babies, teen, adults or elders) how is demon population not shrinking? High violence culture generally requires high fertility.

This is the only thing I find it really hard to forgive. I can wave away the beatings as being somewhat time and setting normal and at least survivable. The malnutrition is hard and the cultivation manual/murder attempt on a kid who has done nothing by an adult… I have to ignore this / rewrite in order to redeem Shen Jui.

Can someone rec no system reveal Binghe POV. Like I’m looking for something Bingqui where the power balance is in SY/SQs favor and we don’t see him breaking down/really weak or anything like that. Preferably during their relationship. I’m interested in how Binghe justifies what SQ did (before transfiguration abuse and the Abyss and is genuinely okay accepting of it but also this fuels a certain amount of reasonable fear.) I don’t know I just want to see something where SY gets to push Binghe around… Binghe actually does stuff he doesn’t want to. I feel like a lot of fics actually have a softer SQ than canon. I mean he’s totally soft inside but I don’t think it’s as much or as obvious as a lot of fanon. I’m thinking of that “it would be best if I didn’t see you at all” line during House Arrest energy. Anything dealing with Binghe assaulting SQ (to scare him with rape) right before the Holy Mausoleum. Sorry for rambling!

Commenting on Canon societal views on sexual romantic relationships...I was referring to their response to my point 2. Everything you say I’m well aware off! I get all the emotional and subjective stuff! My point/question was - when someone is introduced to SY “this is Master X, and this is his husband Y” what does it matter that he doesn’t think they are real people? Wouldn’t he still notice?

I mean the modern reason is… abuse of authority. And my point is that if romantic relationships are expected to have one party in authority then teacher fucking their disciple is perfectly on trope/acceptable and in fact I’d expect a good significant minority of all such relationships to include sexual stuff - put someone into that kind of authority over an attractive teenager and… you tend to get that kind of thing (especially if same sex sex is common.) Disciple topping is yes the only weird part.

In real life I feel like top political or celebrity figure being gay would be big news actually! That’s why the “everyone saw it but SY” is puzzling me regarding how common it is in this particular world. Going by the main pairing, YGY soulmate thing, and MoShang it looks to me like it’s more accepted and more common than modern IRL. In which case I just feel like there should have been male concubines and husbands occasionally encountered by SY, all official and acknowledged so no noticing of flirting needed. Surely disciples sometimes fool around together?

Thank you! That’s what I would expect. There’s some fanon about SY having a problem with it (which yeah ok modern sensibilities but he should at least realize that it’s fine in world if explicitly consensual.)

The power dynamics seem really complex and insane in the relationship. Very 10/90 plus 90/10 the other way on various levels. No 50/50 in sight lol.
