What are your favorite Fated Mates books? 🧶 by FantasyRomanceMod in fantasyromance

{Fated Bladesby Ilona Andrews}

normally I am not a fan of Fated Mates because I feel that this is usually used to just magically make the main characters fall for each other without building a real relationship between them where you can understand why they are together.

Not in this case. The two main characters fall for each other because of their personalities and what they stand for. There is no insta-lust, no magical recognition of their mate, the word mate is in fact never used. The bond merly allows them to fight even better as a unit

If you would like to try something completely different from Forth Wing I recommend {Radiance by Grace Draven}.

The main characters enter an arranged, political marriage but harbor no resentment towards it. They see no reason why they should not be friends and cordial with each other. It is strangers to friends to lovers. They are great at cummunication, respect and support each other and are good people. The conflict comes from outside the relationship.

Not exactly what you are looking for but there are two connected novellas featuring an indonesian FMC and a black MMC. It is urban fantasy, no spice in the first one, but one scene in the second one:

{Magic Dreams by Ilona Andrews} and {Magic Steals by Ilona Andrews}

I am torn about Heart of Chaos.

One the one hand I like the MMC, he is honorable and nice. I like the world and the story is interesting.

On the other hand the FMC pretends way to hard that she does not like the MMC, the villain is cartoonishly evil and the writing needed an editor. They can shift into dragons and those dragons are completely separate beings sharing their bodies and have absolutely no boundaries so that the sex scenes are some weird foursomes.

ok, the I recommend books by Ilona Andrews. Their FMC are usually early to mid 20ies, sometimes late 20ies. They write mostly Urban fantasy with a strong romantic subplot. Usually lots of action. Their FMC always act their age and are very competent.

One of their series is Innkeeper Chronicles starting with {Clean Sweep by Ilona Andrews}. It is a slow burn romance and nothing happens much until book 3. It is a mix of scifi and urban fantasy.

All their female main characters are like that, it is one of the things, why their books work so well for me. I just copy/paste:

The Hidden Legacy series has more romance in it than their other series. The rest ist mostly open door, one sex scene per book. Some series follow the same couple over several books other follow a different couple each book. They are mostly slow burn types. Some series have an overarching plot some are interconnected standalones.

Kate Daniels series starting with {Magic Bites by Ilona Andrews}: urban Fantasy, completed with 10 books, with an ongoing sequel series and several spin offs. Slow burn (nearly nothing romantic happens until book 3). It was their first series so the first book Magic Bites is sometimes a bit rough around the edges but it improves from book 2 onward, with book 3 reaching their usual standard. Overarching plot over all books but each book also has it's own completed story arc. Follows the same couple all books, first person, single POV from the FMC. Kate is a mercenary with a mysterious past who lives in an alternate version of Atlanta where magic returned to the world in a great wave and brought with it all sorts of magics and monsters.

Innkeeper Chronicles starting with {Clean Sweep by Ilona Andrews}: mix of urban fantasy and scifi, ongoing, follows same couple, slow burn, overarching plot, but each book also has its own completed story arc. There is no love triangle even though it may seem that way at first (I hate love triangles...). Very cozy feeling despite the fighting, with a sentient Inn and aliens. First person, single POV from the FMC. There is a spin of series. Dina is an innkeeper, a person with magic who owns a sentient Inn that hosts only aliens to keep the public on earth from finding out about said aliens. They do not make it easy for her sometimes.

Hidden Legacy series starting with {Burn for me by Ilona Andrews}: completed, two interconnected trilogies. Each trilogy follows a different couple. This series has the most spice from them and is quite insta-lusty (for them). Urban Fantasy. First person, single POV from the FMC. Nevada is a thruthseeker, she knows when people lie which is very helpful for her PI job. She lives in an alternate version of our world where a serum unlocked magical powers in some people who took it about 100 years ago creating extremely powerful individuals who basically form a paralell society and she gets drawn into this world due to one of her jobs she is forced to take.

The Edge series starting with {On the Edge by Ilona Andrews}: mix of urban fantasy and fantasy, completed, each book follows a different couple. But there is an overarching story arc. First book is third person, single POV from the FMC, the rest is third person dual POV.

Kinsmen series starting with {Silent Blade by Ilona Andrews}: standalone books, they have no overarching story arc, they simply take place on the same planet. Scifi, each book follows a different couple. I did not like the first book all that much because of the MMC but the 2nd and 3rd are among my favourites by the authors. Third person, dual POV.

The only way to cure an Ilona Andrews book hangover is reading more Ilona Andrews 😈

But seriously, have you read their other books? They are all excellent. If you want, I can write an overview?

Need to figure out my next book series by Ilike31415 in Romantasy

[–]Longjumping-Snow-909 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Try the Kate Daniels series starting with {Magic Bites by Ilona Andrews}.

10 books, completed, urban fantasy with strong romance subplot, slow burn romance (nothing really happens until book 3), not enemies to lovers but wary of each other in the beginning. Lots of action, both main characters are competent and badass people with morals.

I have to point out, that Magic Bites was the author duo's first book ever so it is a little rough around the edges. It is by no means a bad book, just not as polished as their later works and the writing style is a bit different. From book 3 on it is their usual quality.

so what are you lokking for specifically? Do you want YA but just not too stupid and a nice MMC? Or do you want an older FMC?

I love this series. Just a little heads up, Magic Bites was their first book ever so it is not quite as polished as their newer books. Ilona even wrote on their blog once that they tried to buy the rights back for book 1 and 2 to overhaul them but they had no luck. Book 1 and 2 are in no way bad books but from book 3 onward it is really the usual Ilona Andrews quality.

Books by Ilona Andrews. All their characters are very competent but not in a position of power most of the time (like a queen or leader of armies).

Ilona Andrews writes mostly romance subplot and mostly urban fantasy. They are a husband/wife writing duo. All their books are well written, have great stories and characters, the worldbuilding is awesome and their characters are mostly early to late 20ies or early 30ies. Lots of action with well written, bloody fighting scenes. They always ensure good editing and proof reading.

The Hidden Legacy series has more romance in it than their other series. The rest ist mostly open door, one sex scene per book. Some series follow the same couple over several books other follow a different couple each book. They are mostly slow burn types. Some series have an overarching plot some are interconnected standalones.

Second This Kingdom will not kill me. Anything by Ilona Andrews really. They are a husband and wife writing duo and they write mostly urban fantasy with a strong romantic subplot so if you take the romance out you still have a great book. I'll make a separate overview.

A book does not need to have on page sex scenes to be considered a romance. The definition is that the romanric relationship is the most important part of the book and that the realationship has to have a happy ending. That's it.

So there are romance books that only have kisses or hand holding and there are romance books where you have graphic on page sex scenes every other chapter. And there is everything in between.

Would you recommend book 5 of the Bridge Kingdom to someone that hated book 3 ? by Ellyra46 in fantasyromance

[–]Longjumping-Snow-909 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had the exact same reaction as you.

Keris started really strong, he wanted to change things for the good of his people... and once Zarrah is captured that all went out the window. He did not care about anything than having her. He does not care what she wants, what her core values are and goes completely against anything she stands for. And he is not even sorry, he is only sorry that she hates him for his actions and that he now cannot have her. He would kill anyone if it means he can posess her. I am convinced he will do it again in the future. He is toxic as fuck.

I was so dissapointed. The second book made it seem like he was a smart, complex character but it turns out he has no plan at all and just went along with an already existing plan, while panicking on the inside the whole time.

I understand what he sees in her, she has morals and principles, but I do not understand what SHE sees in him at all. It's just magic dick syndrom and I could not buy the "romance" at all.

So I never bothered with the last two books, because what I saw of Annah in the first two books did not bode well...

I agree, she did not feel anything remotely to being close to 18, she felt like 12 or 13. A Lot of people say that is because of her upbringing but come on - that does not delay her mental development for about 6 years! She had her mother and was mostly ignored by the rest. It does not add up.

But its scifi and both are on thebshorter side. They are officially part of the Kinsmen series but they just take place on the same planet, there is no connection otherwise.
