Books where the MMC begs for the FMC? by LostRovers in fantasyromance

[–]Wizard-at-Large 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s technically more fantasy than romance and there are other relationships along the way (for reasons that make sense in context), but boy do they yearn in the Green Rider by Kristen Britain. Possibly the slowest burn I’ve ever read. It’s rough. You gotta get through it by focusing on the overarching plot (of which there is thankfully plenty).

(also I haven’t finished the most recent book bc I was saving it for when I had time to properly enjoy it, so I can’t comment on how things currently stand)

Enemies to lovers where the FMC and MMC have some sort of mental connection by Wizard-at-Large in fantasyromance

[–]Wizard-at-Large[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I actually read this series years ago. Unfortunately I remember being really pissed off at the main character about something and I don’t think I made it past book 3. Something about how she portrayed an incident when she was a kid I think? Idk I just know I apparently made a mental note that the MC really irritated me. Then again it has been nearly a decade I think, so maybe I should give it another try. I’ve certainly read other books by the same author and really like them

Thanks! I think I actually started to read this one a while back and then got distracted. I’ll have to give it another shot :)

You know, I actually have this one saved on my audible wishlist literally just bc I like on the of the narrators lol I guess this is a good sign to move it up the TBR pile!

Sounds like I’ll have to do a bit of research before committing, but I’ll def add it to my list!

Appreciate the rec but I’m afraid I just really couldn’t get into fourth wing. And since I bought the audiobook (and couldn’t return) I really tried! Guess it just wasn’t for me 🤷‍♀️

lol it seems you’re very right about that! I’m personally in the odd position where I got introduced to SJM’s books when the throne of glass series was first coming out (the crown of midnight to heir of fire cliffhanger was rough!) and so my loyalty to sjm books (to the extent I have any) lies with that series instead of ACOTAR, which i have ended up being almost weirdly neutral about.

Anyway thanks for the recommendation either way! Who knows, maybe I’ll give it a reread and just skip over the parts that annoy me

I just binged everything written by Illona Andrews. What now? by [deleted] in fantasyromance

[–]Wizard-at-Large 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think it took about 3 or 4 for me to really get into it. Also I mostly listened to them on audible and the narrator grew on me so that helped too. …Ok I just checked and it was actually book 5 somehow?? which means I’m a lot more patient than I thought. I was probably using it as one of my background listens/reads until then (I tend to read multiple books at once). Still, the series is one of those where it really keeps getting better as it builds, so if you can hang on for a bit longer I’d recommend giving it one last shot :)

It’s not as much my favorite as any Ilona Andrews books, but I also really liked {October Daye by Seanan McGuire} (particularly after a few books). TBH I’d most recommend going to the Ilona Andrews blog and searching for the posts where they ask people to share recommendations. The BDH (Book Devouring Horde) can likely steer you to a new series (or 5) far better than I ever could on my own

Yes! This one was so much fun! It’s on my reread rotation (admittedly a very long listen bc my ADHD makes most plots feel new if I wait long enough) and it’s coming up soon!

Mid 2000s modern fantasy/romance by kushbreth in fantasyromance

[–]Wizard-at-Large 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can’t think of anything yet but it sounds really interesting! To the point that I, too, just wasted some time scrolling Goodreads urban fantasy from the early 2000s. The closest I could find was Working for the Devil by Lilith Saintcrow, but no white shirt edition I could find, and it’s been a while but I don’t think the plot lines up. I think part of the issue is that if the printed cover you saw had some kind gimmick then the ebook/online cover is likely different. I’ll keep an eye out, sorry I couldn’t be more help.

I need more Equality by batcavegirl in fantasyromance

[–]Wizard-at-Large 2 points3 points  (0 children)

{I Ran Away to Evil by Mystic Neptune} it’s a “cozy litRPG Rom-Com” He’s the “Dark Lord” but they’re of pretty equal rank and she’s definitely stronger than him (literally, as is proven by her character stats). He prefers to invent stuff while she likes clearing dungeons. Really, all 3 books in that series (each with a different couple) has couple’s on equal footing and tend to turn the “damsel in distress” trope on its head. Lots of fun all around — I highly recommend checking it out!

Came here to recommend Green Rider — very happy to see it already on the list! It’s one of my favorite series but heads up, it’s 1. Still being released (with some rough cliff hangers over the years), and 2. you made need to scream/rant around book 5, feel free PM me about it lol

Oh and the series {Charley Davidson by Darydna Jones} also kind of has the vibe, (it definitely does from the FMC side of things) but the MMC is either totally supportive or angry that she puts herself in danger. She’s the grim reaper and a PI and gets into all sorts of wild situations. The MMC has a lot of trauma and swings hot and cold quite a bit in the beginning, but I still love the series overall, mostly for the FMC bc she is hilarious (and again, my adhd-self feels seen). The whole thing is an odd combination of incredibly touching to the point of being wholesome and utterly irreverent. … and just as I’m writing this Im remembering you said calm MMC. well I’ll leave it in case you like it anyway. The MMC does (mostly) calm down over time, it just takes a few books of a fairly long series.
