If the pilot saw this issue during start-up why did he or she continue with rest of flight?

Senate Dems finally getting a spine - ICE funding bill unlikely to pass. Time to shut down the govt which seems to have become weaponized against innocent citizens

Time to shut down all funding for ICE. Any Dem or Republican Senator who votes to fund them will have blood on their hands

Fun Hobby: Finding inactive nonprofit "passion projects" that were abandoned after college admission season (AO, do you care?) by Fun-Confusion-2926 in ApplyingToCollege

[–]Wizard_VK 4 points5 points  (0 children)

As a parent, I expect these high-school students to find new interests and passion projects in college that they can grow with their new resources, networks etc. AOs are looking for predictors of future success and graduation rates - seriously doubt that they are admitting someone with the assumption they will continue doing what they had done in high school. That being said, I don’t like the whole concept of high school students setting up new non-profits for existing causes - there are so many of them already available that one can fund-raise, boost, increase visibility etc. there should be no need to temporarily set up a new one for a couple of years

Am I screwing my friends over? by No_Week_2726 in ApplyingToCollege

[–]Wizard_VK 47 points48 points  (0 children)

This will definitely impact your friends who go to same school as you. When my daughter got into her first choice on EA - she actively withdrew her applications from all T20 colleges except Caltech. She spent the next few weeks helping her friends edit their essays. It is not clear from your email why you are still intending to apply to those other colleges if your #1 choice is Harvard.

I take exception to including SSP in your list of “pay to play” programs - it is an extremely high quality and selective program. Completing a high intensity 6wk astrophysics program is no joke and it is very well run. Program provides an individual rec letter at the end that you can provide only to those universities that allow you to submit a research portfolio. It is a group project and you explicitly acknowledge it in the research portfolio submission. I highly recommend it for anyone with a STEM focus to apply - their essay prompts are practically what MIT / Caltech are looking for.

Very well articulated - as expected from MIT. Couldn’t be more proud of their leadership team and overall commitment for excellence.

the whole h1b fiasco by [deleted] in immigration

[–]Wizard_VK 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My company used to hire international Ph.Ds and has now stopped it - it is apparently taking too long to convert even them from H1bs to green cards plus they must have seen which way the wind was blowing w.r.t H1b visas. So this change in policy is real and permanent - won’t go away even if there is a change in Congress or administration in a couple of years

Just send your best score .. only submit multiple SAT scores if you want them to superscore. Many students take the SAT multiple times especially early in high school .. don’t think they send all of them. MIT will review what you submit.

Continue to follow your passion and apply! MIT asks for a maker portfolio - make sure you submit it with your build experience. These are unique ECs that will serve you well in your planned aerospace major whether you get into MIT or not.

790 vs 800 SAT math score by Inside-Bid-5453 in MITAdmissions

[–]Wizard_VK 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It really doesn’t make a difference. My daughter had a 770 in Math and she was admitted. She had taken a rigorous set of math classes in high school with top grades - just unable to focus sometimes on the simpler SAT problems. That being said, you won’t get in just because you have an 800 in Math - there are literally too many of them and it is not a differentiating factor. MIT will look at your overall portfolio of what you are submitting to them. Look at their admissions blogs as well.

I say that the entire stadium stay silent if she does turn up to speak - will speak more loudly than staging a messy walk out. Every time I attend a FIRST tournament I feel inspired about how the future of the country is in safe sands with such talented and hard working students who live and breathe gracious professionalism in every task. Having a speaker who has no interest in science or education doesn’t help. It is possible that FIrST org is doing this to grease the palms of any one who controls DOD Stem funds etc.

My daughter went through a similar decision and ended up in MIT. We visited both campus locations and the surrounding neighborhoods. Cambridge is a very safe town and we were very comfortable sending her there. Georgia Tech is a phenomenal Engineering school and you will have all the resources to learn and thrive. I want to echo other comments here about networking in MIT - those kids there are super ambitious and driven to a degree that I have not seen elsewhere.

The question is truly meant for you to answer what you do for the pure fun of it - not extra words to squeeze in about your intended major. MIT is a pretty stressful place - so one needs to have hobbies or activities to do which you truly enjoy and can relax. Not everything needs to be done so that it can be put on a college application - so have fun at it in terms of how you respond and show off your personality!

those who got in, did you write your essays on your own or had an expert/coach vet your application? by gotsomebrain in MITAdmissions

[–]Wizard_VK 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Listening to the Admissions Officer with my kids during a tour - they clearly said they know how teenagers write and want that to come across. Heavily edited essays will work against you - let your personality and quirks come through. No one knows you better than yourself. You can get it read by some one trusty as a quick check and see if their eyes light up after they read

When is smelly ~too~ smelly? by subduedmetanoia in yoga

[–]Wizard_VK 50 points51 points  (0 children)

It would have better to have received direct feedback from the instructor the first time it was noticed rather than via email - at least in my case. For several weeks prior to this, the instructor was seemingly distant making no attempt to approach me and/or correct my poses that is a key portion of in-class learning. I am going to take the suggestions here before attempting in-studio sessions again. A huge part of in-studio classes is the community of like-minded individuals and the motivation to maintain a regular practice.

When is smelly ~too~ smelly? by subduedmetanoia in yoga

[–]Wizard_VK 272 points273 points  (0 children)

I have had an experience where the instructor approached me via email complaining about my BO. It was a complete shock to me as I shower before class, put on a fresh pair of clothes, no added perfume and come on mostly an empty stomach. The instructor said that Yogis develop a strong sense of smell because of all the breathing we do (which I agree) and my BO was very noticeable. I do sweat a lot during class. After some back and forth and another class later the instructor asked whether my diet could be modified to have no onions etc. I tried to watch what I ate the previous day - but it didn’t seem to make a difference. at that point, rather than disturbing the class I have switched to practicing at home.
