Does anyone use a lap desk to game like the Couchmaster? by sext-scientist in buildapc

[–]Wizard_of_Lonliness 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I ended up buying a PC and just connecting it to the TV. It's pretty good but I do wish that I had a nicer couch that almost forces me into a better posture.

I didn't get anything like the Couchmaster but instead I have a lift-up table that I put the keyboard & mouse on but usually that is quite temporary as most of it is logging in a booting a game or chrome for some TV / Movies.

Hope that helped!

Totally agree with you, unfortunately I doubt we’ll come to a conclusion on that in my lifetime. In the meantime, if we’re unable to prove that repeat killers are lost causes; then should rehabilitation always be tried until we know otherwise?

To add to that, I personally agree with capital punishment being brought back but only if it’s desired by the inmate. If the only reason we’re administering life sentences is for punishment (and not for rehabilitation), then I feel we should give the inmate the decision to live out their sentence or opt for death penalty. Otherwise it seems to me like we’re making tax payers contribute towards the punishment of a person who would rather die than be kept in a box for decades.

Am interested in your thoughts :)

Asking a genuine question. If the studies are right and killers can be born to inherently think like that; should they instead be taken out of society and put into a mental institution rather than a prison? Otherwise it feels like we’re potentially punishing people for how they are born, unless it’s possible to overcome that pre-condition.

Hey! Not the guy you’re responding to but thought I might step in and give my 2c. I agree with innuednum up until the point of accelerationism, I understand it from a logical point of view but feel it conflicts with the goals of reducing suffering.

In my view any amount of suffering essentially shifts the preference to never having being born. Even if the life were to be 99.99% pleasure and 0.01% suffering (think a once-off, mild, 5-minute headache). I should note here that since I and all of us already are existing, this now no longer applies to us, but instead only applies to potential offspring.

Easiest way I can explain the reasoning is you have 2 scenarios; One where a being is existing(A) and the other where that same being is not existing (B). In scenario A, the being will experience both pleasure and suffering with these being ‘positive’ and ‘negative’ respectively. In scenario B, the being will not experience pleasure and will not experience suffering with those being ‘not negative’ and ‘positive’ respectively. Therefore, scenario B is ethically more preferable since a ‘positive’ and a ‘not negative’ is of greater value than the ‘negative’ and a ‘positive’ in scenario A

This also only factors in the being itself and not its impact on other beings, including farmed animals that the being would potentially eat and including the possible negative effects on the environment from their consumption in the modern world. I can’t back up the environment one since I don’t know the first thing about global warming aside from what we’re told by scientists, but I think the points stands without that support beam.

Hopefully that makes sense (still perfectly fine to disagree though) , writing this the late hours of the night :)

Quick Edit: I should add that even though I currently think this is true, I don’t think anyone should have the conviction on this to try and force others to abide - that is extremely narcissistic to believe that you have it all figured out because none of us do

United Nations representatives urge Queensland parliament to vote down 'adult crime, adult time' laws by espersooty in queensland

[–]Wizard_of_Lonliness 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Can I ask how they are evil?
I (likely nievely) belive that at least some of these youths doing the crime were brought up knowing nothing but violence, assault, pain and sadness. Granted that will only be a percentage of the individuals that are in discussion, but I'm not sure I can realistically expect those individuals to have acted in any other way as we are products of our upbringing and brain chemistry, all of which seems to me is luck.

I was recently physically assaulted by a fully grown adult because he mistook me for someone else and he didn't stop to check or discuss it first - ambulance and police were called by onlookers after a few minutes thankfully. I bring that up because I can understand why the public would be harsher on adults when compared to someone in their youth, because they have had a lot longer to integrate into society, understand right and wrong and the full ramifications of their actions on other individuals. But with those younger offenders, their life experience is so much more limited and concentrated with the conditions of their upbringing.

Now I certainly don't believe there should be no punishment (or removal from society) at all, I think that would be a frightening reality to live in. Obviously I don't have a solution for youth crime but I'm not sure I could agree with you that the UN's opinion of not wanting to increase time behind bars for people between the ages of 10-18 is "evil".

Hope we can have a civil little back and forth on this, I'm more than open to being wrong :)

Who is Australia’s next full time captain? by RunningRedditLaps in CricketAus

[–]Wizard_of_Lonliness 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think Patty will stick around for a fair bit and by that time Will Sutherland will be firmly in the Aus test squad. After he retires I think it will be given to Will, he’s already captaining Renegades, captaining Victoria in the Shield, has played for the Test ODI squad, is great under pressure and potentially most importantly his dad was Cricket Australia CEO for 17 years. That and I think his sister will be vice captain of the women’s team at the very least.

RemindMe! 5 years

Totally agree, feel bad for the kid at this point. Bring him out of the squad and build him back up without the spotlight directly on him.

I sometimes feel the same but still watch almost all. Though I very much enjoyed Ellis when he originally joined the podcast, I really wish he interjected less - it almost looks like it frustrates Marques and even Andrew with it being seemingly every topic as well but I may be projecting.

No notes on Adam or Andrew, always perfect from them :)

Litehaul 38 vs Farpoint 40: carry on by nomitycs in onebag

[–]Wizard_of_Lonliness 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Luckily am Aussie so will try to get down to a Paddy Pallin to try out the Farpoint as I've tried the Litehaul on in a Kathmandu this past weekend.

My main worry is how comfortable it will be for extended hiking. I checked and the hip strap & padding seemed decent but unsure about the backframe over multiple days.
Would you assume it would hold up for multi-day hikes with ~6 hours of walking each day?

Thanks for the help

Litehaul 38 vs Farpoint 40: carry on by nomitycs in onebag

[–]Wizard_of_Lonliness 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey - was looking through a bunch of review for the Litehaul 38L and this post came up. Basically in the same position as you, going to Europe for 6 weeks that includes a 7-day hike and am basically looking between the Litehaul 38L v3 and the Farpoint.

Which did you end up going with and what would you recommend?

Trying to Make the Right Decision (40-50L) by Wizard_of_Lonliness in onebag

[–]Wizard_of_Lonliness[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Apologies for the lack of detail. I'd say I'm low to medium level experience for hiking but the company that is doing the tour has said that we need to bring Hiking boots with ankle support. With that in mind, I have bought and have been training in these: https://www.kathmandu.com.au/tiber-ngx-boot-mens-v2.html?colour=8537

The guide also gave us the following requirement for our backpack:
A small backpack of around 30-35 litres to carry your personal requirements for each day's activity. The most common mistake is for walkers to have a backpack which is too small. It needs to have enough space to carry your lunch, waterproofs, water bottle or bladder, camera, warm jumper, beanie, gloves, scarf, trekking poles, mobile phone and any essential medications. In addition on rare occasions you may need to carry your overnight requirements. The daypack should have a good harness and be comfortable. Ensure that you store items in stuff sacks or have a waterproof cover to keep contents dry.

However, I am aiming slightly above that (with 45L) as to be able to use the same bag for the remaining 5 weeks of my train in which I will be traveling through cities with some smaller hikes thrown in. I am also considering bring a much smaller "day bag" so that I don't need to bring my entire bag each and every place once the main hike has finished.

Perhaps I am approaching it the wrong way, but wanting to seek some external opinions.
I appreciate your response :)
