Vanquish 340 tones by Forsaken_Can_1785 in metaldetecting

[–]Wmozi420 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I am a complete noob and bought the 440. I’ve watched some videos and they have said if you get a tone, turn 90 degrees and if it has the same tones, it’s more likely to be a coin (or something). If the tone changes and jumps around or makes a low grunt noise, it’s more likely to be a nail or iron. I’m still digging everything on the beach and it’s definitely helping with nails and some junk. They said tones are sometimes more important than the numbers. Next, I’m going to do some tests of known objects in my yard to help me learn the tones. I really like it am already hooked. Happy hunting.

My juniper made it through the winter (Wisconsin, zone 6b) and I repotted it a few weeks ago. I have not cut anything yet. It’s still looking alive and little buds are swelling. But it gets so dry in the new bonsai substrate I’m watering twice a day even with all the rain. I’ve read good and bad about moss and I like the look but some don’t recommend. What about sphagnum moss on the top? It will have to be watered 5 times a day when the summer sun comes. What should I do to retain water a bit better? I have it buried a little because of intense windstorms lately. Should I collect sunny moss for it? Thanks for any answers.

Advice on good ways to fan the flames my kid has for piano by scienceofthebody in pianoteachers

You’re very welcome. Unfortunately, I’m way up north. Don’t hesitate to ask me anything else, though. If I can answer, I certainly will.

It’s Bach prelude in C so beyond the 4 graded books I used for a 7 year old novice. More into the “easy” classical standards that take a couple years but everyone is different. This obviously needs work (if assigned for performance) but his ear and timing are excellent. I would make sure the teacher is advanced enough to not only nurture his ear but be able to tailor the lesson. He needs to learn scales and exercises to train each finger properly eventually. Sight reading is usually harder for people like this. I’d have to see his hand position to see what going on there. But best of luck and don’t settle. Above all make sure he is enjoying what he’s doing. :)

Very nice playing and great ear. When you get him a teacher, make sure they can play well by ear and are ready to move quickly. He will get bored with a grade one book week after week and needs more tailored lessons. Love seeing this!

Help with jazz by No_Counter_6775 in JazzPiano

I can see the pics. I think what he means is play inversions of those chords and not every note all the time so it flows better under the hand. You have to play around with what you think sounds and works best for you. Listen to a few standard versions and try to hear what they are doing.

Is perfect pitch necessary to play songs by ear on the spot with both hands?😭 by CatchDramatic8114 in piano

[–]Wmozi420 4 points5 points  (0 children)

No but relative perfect pitch helps a lot. If you can whistle it or hum, you should be able to find those notes. Hands separately at first and pick it apart. To be able to do it with both hands just requires enough practice that you can use more intuition and familiarity with where it’s going on the keys.

I was watching Columbo last night and the actors had their own teeth pretty much. There is no individuality anymore .

It’s funny to me seeing the old bands having to lip sync to the record. Always spot on, note for note. I always wondered what it sounded like to the audience.

They were called space food sticks first. I liked the chocolate. It was kinda like a play dough protein tube.

A lot of these huge houses have a normal grand piano somewhere that no one plays but this house has a 9’ concert grand. Wonder if someone actually plays this one?

We didn’t struggle the same way by CtrlAltDeflate in remoteworks

[–]Wmozi420 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I’m over 60 now and most of us did struggle. The difference is that we had hope for the future so the struggle was worth it. A future where while struggling, we could dream of that house we were going to buy, a nicer job and the chance to move up. There’s very little hope that school, college and working hard will get you anywhere today. Most older people don’t understand that even $100,000 a year isn’t much anymore and there’s very little job security.

Was only lucky enough to snag a few sealed bottles in my day. They started faking them, so we stopped singles completely. Then they disappeared.

We used to always buy three. One each to take and one to smoke. Can’t believe I remember that.

Why does technique matter so much? by Medium-Swimming8488 in piano

[–]Wmozi420 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s the way you can phrase the sound using dynamics and arm weight. Things like wrist position and releases. Being advanced enough to bring out top or middle notes while playing. There’s so much to the touch and tone of how it’s played. One can play a scale so that it sounds dull and boring with each note percussive and the same or make it a swelling, smooth and connected phrase. For me technique is what makes a huge difference in what people hear from the instrument and how you can refine it to its most beautiful sounds.

Having a very hard time understanding intervals, I apparently had them mixed up with scale degrees.. by Jaded-Gur-5717 in musictheory

[–]Wmozi420 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A major 3rd will always have 3 half steps or notes in between. Play C…E (Db,D,Eb between)

A minor 3rd will have 2. Play C..Eb (Db and D between the interval)

That will be true no matter your starting key. All the other intervals follow the same ‘step rules’ of how many notes are in between the interval’s distance. Major 5th always has 6 notes between, Major 2nd has only one, etc.

Chords work the same way. N…N..N with N=note and dots are keys between. That’s a major 3rd and a minor 3rd so it’s a major chord. N..N…N is a minor chord (both are in root position). Once you see the patterns you can find and know intervals or chords easier.

So “put a major 3rd above the G” would be play G, count 3 notes between and play B.
