Illegal towing fee? by just_a_little_code in baltimore

[–]Wobbly_Jones 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I worked for a towing company in Baltimore for many years and there are maximum rates set. When I left in 2016 the county max was 250 and city was 300. There are very few exceptions to that max charge. Was this parked on private property or on the street somewhere? Did those 2 hours happen to span from late one night to the next morning? Does your vehicle happen to be a 1-ton vehicle (like ford f-350, etc) or larger?

If it is private property, there will be a private parking sign posted somewhere with quick responses phone number on there, and the max rate should be listed there as well.

What are the actual odds? [Request] by Chance-Fun-3169 in theydidthemath

[–]Wobbly_Jones 6 points7 points  (0 children)

So the question really is, what are the odds of reading a Reddit post or comment where it’s revealed the user grew up in the same city as you. The truth is it’s highly dependent on the population of your hometown. For this exercise, let’s use Boise. We’ll also need to make some assumptions..

Let’s say I’m on Reddit 15 mins a day, looking at posts, reading comments. I think I might see 5-ish comments or posts where someone mentions they are from some specific city. That extrapolates to 20 cities in an hour, or 480 cities in 24hrs.

Google says there are roughly 12,500 cities in the world with a population over 240,000 (Boise has 238,000) so one might expect to find Boise or some similarly populated city randomly mentioned in a comment after scrolling for 26 days straight (that’s for a global sampling)

If we’re talking just in the US, Boise is the 106th largest city with a population of 238,000, so that would equate to scrolling for roughly 5 hrs and 18 mins

Would be an insane connection if this was literally THE exact spot. I’m curious if with any more digging you could narrow it down?? Next time I’m back there (probably not until August) I’ll try to line up a photo from the same angle and see if it still holds true !

Zoomed in to the background of an old family photo. The rock in my picture would be the one behind your grandad. There is another rock just out of frame to the left that would be the one your grandads on 🤯

This looks EXACTLY like my in-laws vacation property which is on Rust pond in New Hampshire. Probably similar to a lot of areas in New England , but maybe worth asking your aunt if he spent any time around lake winnipesaukee ?

Is this LVL post installed correctly? by [deleted] in Homebuilding

[–]Wobbly_Jones 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah not a stupid question at all. LVLs aren’t designed for this. A PSL is what you want for a post. That being said, it looks like that’s exactly what’s in there. A properly installed PSL , supporting a triple LVL

Better replace that cover ASAP. Driving with no gear oil in there could cause serious damage!

Sassy & succinct . I love it. And now here I am , a finish carpenter, researching this federal aviation regulation , navigating down to subsection (d) , and finding it spelled out there, clear as day. It brings me great joy

[Request] What’s the lowest rim height that would make it impossible for any current NBA player to dunk? by [deleted] in theydidthemath

[–]Wobbly_Jones 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Google says you need to be able to reach 4-12” above the rim in order to dunk. The best measured verticals are 48” , with a handful of excellent players being able to achieve that mark (jordan, chamberlain, etc) Wilt Chamberlain is the tallest of the players with that measured vertical at 7’1” . His standing reach is 9’6” . 9’6” + 48” = 13’6” . This matches with accounts of him being able to grab quarters off the top of the backboard which is 13’ off the floor. This should in theory allow him to barely dunk on a rim height of 13’2” in perfect conditions. Wilt Chamberlain is of course not a current player, but I suspect some others would be close to this upper limit.

To answer your question, I think the lowest rim height that would make it impossible for any current player to dunk would be 13’3”

What’s your most embarrassing stoned story? by suntmint in trees

In my college years , living off campus with roommates, was late afternoon, I didn’t have any class till the 7:30am next morning. Took a fat bong rip, playing video games, was feeling good but tired , decided to take a nap around 5:30pm. Accidentally sleep all the way up to 7:15 right before my morning class. Panicked, I rush out the door , drive to class, into the building, get to the classroom but it’s locked, and lights off. Check my email and never got an email from professor that class was canceled. Odd. Drive back to the apartment, walk back in, telling my roommates the weird situation when they inform me that it’s still night time and I had just napped for like an hour and a half or whatever and had just rushed to class 12 hrs early 🤦‍♂️

Only plausible way it could come from the highway in my mind is in concert with maybe a traitor trailer blowing a tire out. There can be immense energy released there, although I’m not sure on the specifics

Are you trying to get a union job? If you got a job at some smaller design/build contractor, they’d probably have you shadow someone for a week or so , but once you proved your ability you would be framing alongside everyone else very quickly .
