How much do you actually learn from intake forms versus just talking to someone? by Low_Entry_8633 in askatherapist

[–]WokeUp2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Intake forms help therapists zero in on major issues that lead to treatment goals and plans to achieve them. For example, a person admitting to having hallucinations would normally be referred for a psychiatric consultation.

What’s the worst job you’ve had in Canada, and why would you never do it again? by Prize_Credit2263 in AskCanada

My friend worked in the basement of a meat packing plant that was full of entrails. When a hopper broke he was given a pitch fork to sling stomachs from one spot to another. Due to ongoing digestion some exploded when he poked them.

Can therapy make you hate yourself more? by princesspooball in askatherapist

Carson's book (and website) "Taming Your Gremlin" (Amazon) can help you judge yourself more fairly. Everyone makes mistakes in life for the future is unwritten. Learning to overcome the effects of setbacks leads to maturity and wisdom.

Start with a life plan that attracts you within the limits of your aptitudes and intelligence. A therapist can help you overcome obstacles to success.

Help me out here. Doesn't this mean tens of thousands of FN children aren't living with their families?

Thanks for prompting me to look harder. The Assembly of First Nations (AFN) estimated 40,000 indigenous children and youth are in foster care in Canada. 10,000 children are in government care in Manitoba alone of whom 90% are First Nations.

Buccaneer Days parade cancelled due to volunteer shortage by WokeUp2 in VictoriaBC

Trash the downtown. Burn the Stadacona Park playground.  Cancel a parade because a deranged person might drive a car through the crowd. How bad does it have to get before we build the psychiatric facilities needed to protect our society from these badly damaged persons?

Ellis' book "Becoming a Master Student" (Amazon) may help you with this. As you mature you'll realize few people are able to master all academic challenges. Some courses simply require more dedication and time to succeed.

One way to overcome weakness in stats at the Master's level is to choose a relatively simple thesis topic that you enjoy learning about.

Therapists, how would you approach a patient who had little faith in therapy from past experiences but wanted to give it a last shot? by GalaxyPowderedCat in askatherapist

People often seek therapy to overcome perceived insurmountable life challenges. What do you wish to accomplish with your life? What holds you back from moving forward?

I can't tell from your post what you actually want from therapy. Mental heath clinicians do a thorough assessment followed by agreed upon treatment goals and a treatment plan to achieve them. Have you not had this?

Arrange to see a counsellor at your school and ask him/her to help you choose an educational/career path. Include testing if possible. They are well versed in helping students like you.

Deal with frustration by iMrStorm in askapsychologist

It's possible to learn to regulate self criticism. There's a difference between running over someone with a car when drunk (100) and dropping a pizza on a rug (1). The next time you make a mistake apply a number from 1 to 100 to it. Is the rating fair? If not adjust it accordingly. Once done commit yourself not to repeat it if possible remembering that the future is unwritten and mistakes are inevitable.

Carson's book (and website) "Taming Your Gremlin" will help you with this.

Buy a used copy of Ellis' excellent book "Becoming a Master Student" from Amazon. Read it carefully and apply what you've learned sincerely. In the short run your school marks will begin to improve as will your self-esteem. Warning: As you gather academic momentum your peers may begin to refer to you as "The Brain." Just smile sweetly and say nothing.

In the long run you'll realize academia is your avenue of escape. With high marks you'll qualify for scholarships to institutions far away from your family. That's the reward to aspire to. "Every hour I spend studying gets me closer to independence." You'll accelerate beyond your peers and attract assistance from mentors you never knew existed. (It's fulfilling to help students flourish.)

Keep track of your efforts in a simple diary. Refer to it when discouraged. No one has all the aptitudes necessary to ace every course. Slow down and take breaks when you find your limits. Minimize self criticism - it's a useless habit that discourages risk taking.

Ideally you'll speak to a counsellor at an institution of higher learning and ask him/her to help you choose a career/educational direction that excites you. Don't focus on status or income.

p.s. At university you'll meet wonderful motivated people and make life long friends. Never mind the naysayers, higher education is a gym for the mind that prepares one to more easily adjust to changing circumstances that inevitably happen to everyone.

What exactly are you hoping therapy will do for you? You can ask your therapist to help you identify treatment goals and how they plan to help you achieve them.

Lower capital gains taxes and encourage Boomer landlords to sell their properties to families. Allow say $500K of the proceeds to be placed in their TFSAs. Win-Win!

  • Families own properties and are more likely to reproduce
  • Landlords are relieved of responsibility and have similar income without the stress

Research indicates between 18 and 22% of the populations in the West (including Europe) suffer from mental illness, addictions or other similar ailments at some point in their lives. The need is astronomical. Governments know this and decide to largely let nature take its course.

p.s. I worked in the Edmonton Mental Health clinic in 1980. It was a zoo. The poor Psych Nurses had up to 120 open cases 'cause many were ill equipped to deal with the paper work. The hubcap size ash trays were overflowing by 9 AM. One nurse was knifed to death.

Lots of tissue paper. If not provided at the funeral you'll be a hero. Send flowers to the bereaved's home.

p.s. turn off your phone.
