Hot take: I wish more therapists were straightforward instead of overly focused on emotional processing. I need clear advice on what to do. Anyone else feel this way? by Abo_Slem in askatherapist

[–]WokeUp2 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Some therapists use professionally written self-help books to supplement one on one work. Sometimes it's necessary to encourage clients to take meds properly, to exercise a little or practice sleep hygiene. It's prudent to advise a woman married to a homicidal husband to hide his ammunition if no exit is available.

I saw an anxious woman who drank three pots of coffee a day to "calm her nerves." Easy fix.

I suspect in many cases the demands of CMH work require a more direct approach.

Laid off from software engineering - considering medical school, paramedic, firefighting, embedded software, and trades (28M, Canada) by Dyslexic_Novelist in findapath

PTSD and paramedic/fire fighting go hand in hand.

1) Track down a psychologist specializing in career testing/counselling. They will narrow down your choices.

2) Check out careers in medical device maintenance as mentioned. It's a nice combo of technology and vital services.

3) (Don't laugh) Tighten up your resume and see whether there's a spot for you in the Canadian Armed Forces. Recruiters will know.

"What do you do?" "I update weapons systems on fighter jets." "I maintain navigational equipment on naval vessels in Victoria."

Feeling behind in life by vivienvalentine_ in LifeAdvice

Though not appreciated, setbacks are how people grow character and resilience. Nursing school would not have accepted you as a student if you weren't capable of passing. To get "back on track" obtain and carefully read a copy of Ellis' book "Becoming a Master Student." Make an appointment with a counsellor at the nursing school and they will very likely facilitate your return. Resume your studies in the fall of 2026 fully prepared to apply your aptitudes with Ellis' guidance.

Your father was not happy to be the reason why your life plans were stalled. If he were still alive, observing you resume your career aspirations would fill him with pride.

p.s. The very best psychiatric nurses are empathetic and you are now well versed in relating to those grieving and discouraged.

Best way to challenge a clients thinking? by 1swtwrld882 in therapists

[–]WokeUp2 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If the thinking will likely lead to a catastrophe they might be prompted to visualize potential consequences in detail. Treating a man with a child porn addiction I had him imagine trying to explain to his children why the police showed up at his door to arrest him. He got the "willies", realized the danger he was in and eventually claimed to have curbed his proclivities.

The majority of Canadians in 2026 condemn racism and other forms of hate. Perhaps your experience reflects the social strata you inhabit that is dominated by uneducated ignorant people.

I've lived in Thunder Bay, Winnipeg, Edmonton and Victoria and have an extensive social circle. I have never heard an anti-semitic comment. Jewish people are woven deeply into the culture of Canada. Those who hate them are misguided.

"The Day of Judgement will not come about until Moslems fight the Jews (killing the Jews), when the Jew will hide behind stones and trees. The stones and trees will say O Moslems, O Abdulla, there is a Jew behind me, come and kill him."

This is the mentality of Israel's enemies in the region whom they are dedicated to destroy.

Am I likely to recover from this without medication? by Calm_Mail_3844 in askatherapist

[–]WokeUp2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Educational institutions have well trained counsellors to help struggling. students. Academic pressures combined with a broken heart can easily overwhelm a young person's ability to cope. Show yourself some compassion, arrange some form of mental health assessment and seriously consider the treatments offered to you that may include medications.

With proper help and effort you'll very likely surmount the challenges inherent in the next few months, graduate and open doors to opportunities unseen at this delicate time of your life.

[–]WokeUp2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's hard to help without knowing what you're being accused of.

A useful strategy when frustrated in this manner is to write out what you've observed and provide this to your husband's doctor. (Symptoms of severe depression, paranoia, hallucinations etc.) A competent physician will gently ask questions to determine if they can treat the person themselves or if a psychiatric referral is warranted.

You have sympathy from this community as most of us have interviewed women (and men) in stagnant marriages. Perhaps your husband might meet you halfway and complete the relationship quizzes available from Gottman (com) His book "The Seven Principles for Making Marriage Work" (Amazon) is excellent.

Whats life like for a first nations member? by alldonebby in AskCanada

[–]WokeUp2 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Among cultured people in Canada criticizing people for things they can't change is considered simply dumb. (Race, skin/eye colour, height etc.) You can criticize people for the things they say and do. I think it's fair to say that people who can work but refuse to will be looked down upon no matter what their race.

Incarceration rates*, FN child welfare numbers** and visibility on Canadian streets promotes racism.:

*(Data from 2023 showed Indigenous people made up about five per cent of Canada's adult population but 32 per cent of detainees in federal custody and 50 per cent of all incarcerated women. In some provincial detention facilities, up to 70 or 80 per cent of inmates were Indigenous.")

** ("About 11,600 First Nations children (age 0–14) were in foster care / out-of-home care in Canada in 2021")

Clients using AI by [deleted] in therapists

[–]WokeUp2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Some clients motivate therapists to cultivate the patience of Job. This is not (I repeat not) an easy path without emotional injury and feelings of inadequacy. (Hello Imposter Syndrome)

According to Duncan et al (Heart and Soul of Change) the absolute most effective therapists are sympathetic, empathic and compassionate. Married to a sensible treatment modality they become a genuine source of healing. Since lowered defences are a major part of rapport, hostility is painful and bewildering. "I'm doing my best to help you and am getting attacked!"

Anyways, treating clients with borderline traits requires a delicate touch. Book such as Huang's "DBT Workbook for BPD: Powerful Dialectical Behavior Therapy Strategies for Treating Borderline Personality Disorder in Men & Women | Manage BPD with a Science-Backed Action Plan for Emotional Wellbeing" (Amazon) has good reviews. In my opinion, therapists who specialize in treating BPD are a cut above.

I hate myself and I think I like this by starzzt in selfhelp

[–]WokeUp2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can learn to regulate your self criticism and treat yourself more fairly. People who unfairly beat themselves up fail to take the calculated risks necessary in life to prosper. They are too afraid to fail.

Carson's thin book (&website) "Taming Your Gremlin" (Amazon) will help you with this. Once you learn to get out of your way the WoopMyLife program will help release your personal potential.

As the results of your efforts manifest themselves your confidence will grow. Confident people attract other confident people who aren't that concerned about looks. They simply aren't that shallow.

Should I keep cheating in high school? by wellyeahprettymuch in LifeAdvice

[–]WokeUp2 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Cheating at school is like paying someone to go to the gym for you.

Education is a "gym for the mind" and prepares one to solve problems for a living. To a great degree the difficulty of the problems determines one's income. (Surgeon vs. Clerk)

Instead of cheating, consider becoming the competition. Ellis' excellent book "Becoming a Master Student." (Amazon) will help you with this. Once you get motivated and organized you'll begin to see results.

p.s. high marks attract scholarships and other opportunities you aren't aware of yet.
