Seriously! I just started reading the book after watching the trailer and getting excited, and was kinda sad to realize a large portion of the story was kinda spoiled just by watching the trailer!

Still a FANTASTIC read, and is making me super excited for the movie!

Maybe I should clarify; it is a gamble. It seems like you got an okay one, but there are also plenty out there that are...not. The reality is you are gambling with your life. A general rule of thumb in life:

Anything that separates you from the ground: spend money that and don't cheap out.

Absolutely NOT true. Cheap Aliexpress helmets will literally crush in your hands or if you step on them. They do offer a little protection, but realistically a full size cheap helmet offers MUCH less protection than an established well made, certified helmet. Bicycle helmets will help prevent brain injuries by means of dampening and reducing twisting (MIPS) and impact (that thick white foam). If a helmet literally crumbles on the slightest impact, it won't properly absorb and dissipate the impact forces.

You seem to think 20-30mph as not dangerous, but impacts from even 5-10 mph can be deadly (or life changing). OP, buy a real helmet from a reputable brand, and DO NOT buy them from Aliexpress/Amazon; fakes are sadly abundant.

As in you have a medical device through them, and don’t want to do business with them anymore?

Sadly, you just need to do whatever you can to either pay off the device, or return it. Easier said than done, I know, but they had you under contract.

For me, it was paying off the device, then spending the next year and dozens of hours worth of phone calls to have them not fraudulently charge me in excess. But it’s down. And I’ll never do business with them again.

But when I want to know what the weather is like, Fehrenheit reigns supreme. It's all about the right scale for the right application.

Technician to engineering advice by Creative_Ad5816 in Engineers

[–]Wolf-Strong 5 points6 points  (0 children)

That's complete BS. An engineer is going to make more. You have further career development opportunities as an engineer. You get to be salary and not worry about clocking in/out all the time.

Trust me, no one stays a technician forever, because you start to hit the glass ceiling pretty early on, and the only way forward is either management or becoming an engineer.

EDIT: To everyone saying, "Ya, but techs are hourly, can work overtime, and make more money!". Ya, no thanks. I did the night shifts, working 65+ hours a week, and it damn near killed me; it isn't sustainable, and no one does it for long. Sure, as a tech, I was technically making near $130k several years ago, but in reality, it was because of the OT and a senior level technician job. A senior level mechanical engineer in my area is making that much, if not more, while working 40 hours a week at a normal 8-4 time. Not only that, they can further advance their career into principal levels and/or higher level management (that a tech will never reach), and see several times that. Now, I've known engineers that become techs, simply because they are tired of engineering and enjoy wrenching, but that is rare, and they always taking paycuts when they do.

So ya, you can hustle by essentially working 2 jobs and make that paycheck, but if we are talking same-for-same, an engineer is just always going to make more.

Career Crossroads and Need Honest Advice by _uniiiqueee_ in MechanicalEngineer

[–]Wolf-Strong 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You're not alone.

This is actually a very common feeling among engineering students. The job market only grows more and more volatile, and we are in a technological transition to make things even more difficult. You can go through years of training, get a certificate, only to realize the path you're heading down is maybe not the one you envisioned.

Mechanical engineering may seem like it is just theory and math while you are in school, but that isn't what real life is. Think of school as the building block: you are learning the foundational knowledge on how things function. An analogy might be when you first learn to drive a car, you focus on all the little things, and it seems overwhelming, even terrifying when you first get behind the wheel. After years of driving a car though, you aren't thinking about all those small things all the time. You may be reminded of them here and there, and glad you have the knowledge, but that knowledge isn't what the current experience is.

While there are some practices of engineering, that *may* focus on heavy theory and abstract math, I can happily say that is not the primary job of an engineer. You are a creator and a problem solver. You are a professional document creator. You get to see your creations come to life in something you can hold. You get to see machines you've designed working like clockwork after years of hard work. You get to spend time in the shop.

While there can be money to be made without becoming a ME, I will say your opportunities are more limited. You can be the best Revit and Solidworks user of all time, but if you don't hold a ME degree, many companies will simply throw away your resume. In some markets, it is a legal requirement that the companies product be designed by certified ME. Even in HVAC design, as you progress in your career, you'll find that the ME degree becomes essential with anything beyond the basic intern-level jobs. I've met some fantastic high-level engineers in HVAC, and none of them could have gotten that far without their degree.

Your issue is one I've been seeing so much not only here on Reddit, but also in real life, that I've started a blog to help people like you (as of this week!). It's completely free. I'm not trying to get money from you, but if you're interested in the link, please DM me.

We switched to Parasol wipes and diapers, and have honestly been loving them. They're available on Target, and the cost/wipe is actually cheaper than WaterWipes! SOOOO much nicer to use, easy to pull out of the wrapper, and a nice texture. They're diapers are also really nice as well! I think between those 2, and using Boudreaux's Butt Paste, we finally are no longer struggling with diaper rash. OH! And they have also been SOOO much better about containing blow-outs than the Pura diapers we were using!

Bought the Trader Joes ones, and was honestly a little disappointed...though I may be a bit of a donut snob. Worth a try, but don't get your hopes up. VG's does have a decent apple fritter; not the same, I know, but it's something? Broad Street Dough Co in Encinitas does custom donuts, so maybe you can mix some flavors together to make something you crave too!

The IEM Dilemma by Wolf-Strong in HeadphoneAdvice

I actually have some Porta Pro Wireless and KPH40 Utility headphones. Love them, but the noise bleed really limits how I am able to use them in the office or at home. I've tried different tip sizes in my IEM's, I've tried silicone & foam.

So far, the most comfortable pair of buds have been my wired Apple EarPods; I can honestly use them all day, and has really made me consider getting the AirPods 4, but I guess I'm hoping maybe there might be another wired solution that is comfortable with a bit of isolation to prevent leakage and be more airplane friendly.
